Some good posts in here, I'm a regular reader but not poster. Funny old match, very disappointing for sure.

A few things I wanted to contribute:

- it won't be the only time this year we struggle to kick a score. There has been a lot said about the Betts trade but gee we missed him last night.

- hard to know what happened from the 10min mark of the second. We definitely started getting too cute but I think it was all precipitated by Richmond clicking and pressuring us. Our ball movement was ok until then and we had control but we just went to water.

- I believe we have needed a bona fide marking forward to lead our attack since we axed Fevola (which we were right to do). Very disappointing to still not have one, and I know it sits amongst a larger recruiting context but it just seems very disappointing to me.

Hoping very much to bounce back, still early days but it was the way we lost that was worrying.

Up the Blues.

Good to hear from you Percy.

I think our forwards suffer if our mids/attacking defenders can't get the job done. Domino effect.

really, we won enough ball and clearances to win the game last night.

casboult adding forward structure in the form of leading from the goal square and forcing rance to go to him would have opened up our whole forward 50.

we still need a zippy, creative type like buckley up there who can beat a man, open some space or apply some pressure to put the brakes on the rebound once the ball hits the deck.

Let's not kid ourselves, we don't have good key forwards

relying on Liam Jones or Levi Casaboult will take us nowhere

Henderson, who is our potential match winner in the forward line has been disappointing over the last 12 months

i was probably disappointed with henderson the most last night. partly due to my high expectations for him, partly due to fact he looked unfit(?) and struggled to move, but mostly due to the fact he had eff-all intensity or desire about him.

rance towelled him up at every 50-50 for the night, and that's just unacceptable. agree with whoever said he seems lost in attack. He doesn't lead into space, he doesn't read down the park very well, ie he won't/ can't anticipate where the ball is going to come in to.

Hend as a forward is the 2nd forward to a strong marking casboult type. i know cas is a shit kick, but for the structure of the forward he's essential.

Jones is a strong man-to-man mark, but he (like cas) offers absolutely zero when the ball hits the deck. the difference with cas and jones is cas is a brute, who'll split a pack and hurt, physically hurt his man.

this leaves the 2nd best defender to go to henderson and suddenly henderson has room to play his cherry-picking style up front.

imo ... henderson is a CHB, and a damn good one. or an above average 2nd tall forward.

jacksh is miles off it. he won't put on 10 kilos for another 2-3 seasons, and without it he's not a back or a forward. imo

like synners said during the week, we need more modern footballers.

Boekhurst & Buckley are quick and fast and along with docherty and menzel fit that modern football prototype. Curnow, carrots, bell, cripps do not. FTR, i like crisps and think he'll have value as a sam mitchell type down the track, but ... from the moment our team was announced, we should've known the result last night. we'd struggle to move the ball quickly, we'd struggle to spread, we'd only be running one way, and once that one way was stopped (after qtr time) we wouldn't have a plan B.

our match selection committee absolutely baffle the hell out of me from week to week ... can't help but feel it has micks fingerprints all over it.

did anyone notice at the stoppages, all night long, our players were looking for their man mark rather even attempting to find their own space and anticipate where the ball was going. it was a defensive mindset all night, to limit the bleeding, rather than to properly have a dig.

whether the mids knew Wood didn't have a chance in hell of winning a tap, or whether it was the gameplan, when you see crisps lining up at a stoppage looking for his man to body up, when he's a ball winner and an extractor and should be looking for his own space and making richmond go to him ... it blows my mind a little.

players put in positions designed to fail.

yeah nah. I would rather the likes of Cripps learning this side of the game because the likes of Fibbs and Murphy have no idea about it. Poor education by previous coaches. Murphy needs to be ripped out of the midfield for good. He needs to go forward for good now. This is where his deficiencies won't be exposed as much and he can be flashy. He is a midfielder with no substance

If the rest of the team had worked as hard as Henderson did last night we would have won.

I think everyone is over rating Henderson. He is a class player but no KF. Quicker we realise this, the quicker we can maximise his output

Mick's post game interview was telling too.

He said at one point that none of the players had played together ... yet that's the roster he built.

He said he knew his forward line might struggle to kick a score due to the fact that our last three leading goal kickers, Betts, waite and garlett are all no longer with us ... yet that's his doing too.

he called daisy a mate ... when we need footballers.

etc etc ... pretty damning stuff if you think about it, imo

Damning!

So negative....curnow, carazzo, white all in specific shut down roles. Too many IMO.

Sums up my feeling. It was like I was watching a different sport. I couldn't remember caring less about a Carlton loss, which ironically made me a bit sad.

The moment Daisy went down a minute in you knew it was all over. Having one of your best run and carriers go down is one thing, but having a guy like Clem with no tank come on and replace him was where we were caught rolling the dice.
That injury screwed us more than people realise, we rolled the dice and lost badly the minute he went down. Too many inexperianced and underdone players to tolerate picking up the pieces and they were clearly spent before 1/2 time. Where Mick failed is not getting the team to slow things down asap to save some miles in the legs, he should of known better... He couldn't possibly of wanted to flog the players that hard?!

I'll give the club credit. It was a marked improvement on what I saw last year (although the hovercraft to me is a bit :screwy: ). It seemed closer to a "Carlton experience" than what felt like the "tick here for the basic pre-game package" from previous years.

I was at the game. Really enjoyed the build up and first quarter.
Had a great spot on Level 2 where I could see patterns unfolding and efforts exposed.

We were really slow in the legs and movement of the ball.
Richmond turned on the desperation, intensity, pace after the deficit grew3 goals 5 behinds: 8 shots.
They got desperate and didn't give up after that. The press they used on us in the forward line killed us.
We couldn't find a way out.

One way out of a press like that is to run it out with handball and pin point passing. Keep possession.
Instead we lobbed the ball out by hand and foot passing. This gave them time to close in on us and cause the turn over. We had possession but we gave it up too easily over and over.

Richmond on the other hand passed with quick low passes which gave them possession but moved across the field with speed. That's where we lost it I reckon. They created space with quick ball movement.

Where we continue to be content to corral them when they have possession, they attached the hips of our players with gusto and intent, closing down our space with finals like efforts.

Doesn't look like our disposal skills improved over summer, let alone our ball movement.

White Jones and Wood all missed straight up shots from the same side pocket which believe me were very easy gets. That is not AFL standard and a waste off opportunities...Casboult like.

I've read all the posts and have to say I agree with most of jimmies opinions. Jones and Hendo were not the central problem but have to say Hendo when in form takes those 50/50 marks against the likes of Rance who is an AA.

Hurts me to say this but I pointed this out during the game to my fellow Bluebaggers, but I didn't realise.... Ummm... Ummmm.... Cripps is really much slower than I allowed myself to believe. Clem just didn't have the speed I expected of him, Curnow, Carrots are equally as slow as Cripps. In a best 22 I'd keep only 1 if we are going to keep up with the pace of today's game.

Some posters think we suffer predominantly from the sins of the present, some the sins of the past. I am in the past camp. I thought our selections last night were unforgivable. Tutt, Bokeburst were in our best 22 on NAB cup form. Add buckley and casboult who are positive footballers. I less interested in the scoreboard and more into player development.

I'm sure the hovercraft was used at Princes Park when Capt. Carlton first started

The day after and I've cooled down from the loss.

There's a fair few here giving Murphy stick saying he's not captain material. But having a think about it I can see some correlations between when Judd was captain and now Murphy as captain. I remember Judd being battered from pillar to post. Many posters here asked the question, where was Judds support? Its easy to remember those times Judd was smashed by opposition, and who came in for Judd? No one. Many here complained about that, and rightly so. I can remember many times where Murphy received the same treatment, and who stepped up for Murphy?

I honestly thought Malthouse would bring some mongrel into the club. Get the guys behind each other, and especially behind the captain. A captain is someone your supposed to fight for, someone who leads you, unites you and someone your eager to protect and uphold. Not because of who he is as a person, but because of his position. Judd never received any of this from the playing group, his body suffered terribly because of it. I see Murphy going through the same thing. And I for one can't blame him if this directly effects his ability. If it can stop the great man Judd, how can Murphy be any different?

Murphy soft? Or is it self preservation? Look at the toll it took on Judd. Many here complained about Judds lack of support, and what, Judd is not a worthy captain? Can anyone say he wasn't? Any team in the comp would have loved him to captain their side. We got that privilege, yet what did we witness? A man who almost broke himself trying to lead by example and drag his team to victory? He still does it to his amazing credit.

Its a glaring deficiency this club has imho. Something I thought Malthouse would address and change when appointed as senior coach. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Murphy wants a long and illustrious career as captain of Carlton and is not prepared to have his body destroyed and his career cut short because his "team mates" stood by and watched ...

Judd Simpson Docherty Yarran and Bell were my best. Bell is not slow!

I do not think throwing around players, or players making it up as the go helps our stability and our patterns. we will never learn to play with each other if players move around as they did. When Rowe left the backline it was a bit of comedy capers as to who was on who. That's not a game plan. It was almost preseason trials like.

The problem starts in the ruck where I thought Wood was OK and busted a gut with his running and ground coverage....then he would either try have a spell in the forward line absolutely [REDACTED] or try and sprint off the ground in need of a rest.

Let's not be too critical of our KPs because they were following coaches instructions. whilst we won clearances the ball movement in the thick of things and on the outside was not going to help the team let alone the KPs.

Wood...lone hand ruck / FF
Rowe...CHB/ ruck / FF
Jaksch...BP/ CHB/ FF....showed some good signs and I'm not blaming his weight on anything
White...tagging....WTF....that's curnows and Carrots and Smiths role...bunch of Tiggers

If the ball was moved quickly forward and I mean deep forward like Richmond not just making the 50 m arc Jones and Hendo would have killed it. Together they looked ominous when the ball was kicked to the square. Jones looked good and should've had 4 by half time. My word of advice is that this is Carlton and if you want a goal kicking position in the 22 then take kicking for goal more serious. I'll forgive him this time.

Hendo isn't in form. I thought he played the KPFS role well and ran beautifully, he just didn't clunk them. Easily our best fwd Imo despite the fact he is ALSO a very good FB. He's aour best so leave forward.

Losing Waite is not losing a match winner. Forget about Waite. If he wasn't injured/ suspended he was lazy and would only turn it on one every 4-5 games. We miss Garletts pace. We miss Eddy Betts. wasn't Clem suppose to be our crumber in the forward Line? We need one.

MM has a lot of work to do. It's his list, it's his game plan.

Mark Murphy is embarrassing. I'm not sticking up for him any more. What's his excuse for the nothing performance. Can't blame MM for that.

We could have pinched that game, if we had a better plan with ball movement, attacking the oppositions hips and making tackles stick. If we didn't miss shots 5-10 metres out and had Thomas fit...we will be Ok, but we an injection of speed.

Carrazzo is too slow and his hospital passes a liability. I know he was the best mid in the Geelong game, but this was the real deal. Curnow is a hard worker and tagged but we lose speed whether we've got the ball or they've got the ball.

We are the only Club in the AFL that goes backwards every year whilst all other Clubs move forward....

It is pointless to talk about the players and their performance. It is no longer about having some heart or some effort or something to show they Care. It is all about football ability and skill and our Boys just don't have it..

The only Person to Blame is Mick.... He is slowly but surely sending our Club to the Dark ages....

The Biggest Scam in the history of this Club is the Appointment of this Coach who is going to destroy the Club before he walks out. The Game has clearly gone past him... His old, boring and predictable Game plan is laughable and beyond a Joke!!

He got rid of players whom we couldn't afford to lose. Today, it was revealed on SEN that Mick has told Eddie Betts to walk as he was not interested in paying him the extra money he deserved. Why? because Pathetic Mick wanted 700,000 to be given to Daisy Thomas....

Speaking of Daisy, what has he done to deserve all that money?. No one is to Blame but Mick alone......

I am so Angry at this Pathetic Club and the way they have handled the playing Group....How could you get rid of proven Winners like Waite and Gartlet and thinking we are going to be able to replace them easily?

Some of our Fans are seriously beyond delusional. They are excited to have a hack like Jones to be playing for us because he is going to give us 2 goals a game from 2 disposals.... We are beyond a Joke....

Hats OFF goes to Synbad.... he was the only Guy who knew where the Club was heading years a go, He must be sitting at home and having a good laugh because everything he Spoke to in the past is coming True!!

The Club must seriously Remove Mick and start from Scratch... From Zero.....

PS: Can someone please tell me who was that Genius who drafted Clem Smith?? where on earth did they find this guy? Is he even a footballer? What a Shocker of a Selection....

Players who are ready to take the next step in Buckley & Casboult are left whilst our Aging players are running out of battery...

And me
I will go one step further
Get rid of Jeanie Pratt
Ruff Germinder
Craig Mathieson
Replace them with people who can take the club forward

As you said start from scratch
We recruit too many blokes who have failed at other clubs
Everitt
Jaksch
Jones
Tutt

Warnock
Whitley

The club stated that there were going to be no more quick fix
Yet it doesn't
The gws deal last year could be another shocker we had pick 7 and potentially picked 2 average footballers
We pick a 21 year old from Perth in Boekhurst who from what I have seen sleeps with the light on
Whitley for those who haven't seen him is a big bodied inside mid who is a shit kick and lacks pace
We have possibly recruited 3 average players for the sake of obtaining one young gun
Sound familiar
We do this because we overrate
Gibbs
Kreuzer
Murphy
Thomas
Sure Kreuzer and Thomas have had injuries but they are still overrated
Murphy is a shit captain and Is soft
When things go the shit on the field we struggle to change because ther is no leadership
Watson has one good game and is kept on the list
Even with Kreuzer and Warnock out our ruck stocks are terrible
Once again Mick says get Wood. He tries but isn't up to Afl standard
why no pick a kid and develop him. At least as a supporter you have the joy of watching him develop than watching Wood blod around
Agree with everything you say about Mick
But in the end it comes down to the board and those 2 families
Shit downstream
Fish rots from the head
Get rid of them
Start from scratch
I love the club and that is why I go on this site
But we are a shit club with a coach who was past it 3 years ago and we didn't listen to what Collingwood did
This is going to be a long year
