I like the first comment.

The reason Southampton are coming 2nd is due to favourable scheduling. We're almost in December and they haven't played any of the top EPL teams. The next 10 rounds will sort them out. They're having a great season but would I be shocked if they finished in top 7 or 8 teams this campaign. People need to remember that the EPL is played over 38 rounds. I've seem a lot of teams in this position by Nov/Dec but come the end of the season they are languishing in a mid-table position. Anyone remember how Arsenal was going win the EPL and Ozil was the best ever EPL signing at this time last year? What a difference 12 months can make.

He is almost right.

Yeah something like that Dane although I like Docherty maybe a chance to push higher. Just think Premiership sides are built with A graders then with depth players and players to fill roles added to them but we seem to do it the other way around.

B graders can be made to look like A graders if they are put into a good structure and have a perfect role to play for their individual skill set. WAR sounds like a reverse engineered crock of shit

It's statistical analysis to aid the eyes, or draw the eyes to someone who keeps getting results to find out why.

It's a tool in a toolbox.

The company I work for here in London help implement the secret 'Black Box' into the club. We built it, in other words. It's an amazing system and I'm in charge of installing a similar type set-up with a club back in Australia (obviously i can't say who).

However, Southampton didn't just click their fingers and expected results straight away! They had a plan, a goal, and they worked hard torwards it. That's what we need to do better. Not just buy in a Judd or a Malthouse in the hope that they will bring us a premiership.

More than just interesting reading. I liked the integrated approach and common philosophy when recruiting players and staff.

Ditto.

Thanks Ryan....and good luck with this amazing opportunity in London.

I'm targeting AFL and NRL Clubs now - doing quite well too - so could be home soon!

Not sure why we re-signed Rogers after the failed attempt to lure Wright from Hawthorn, clearly the new Prez indicated by chasing Wright he had little faith in Rogers to rebuild the list....
Be interested to see how SOS goes and it will be a real challenge given he had the freedom of the best picks at GWS to choose from and now has to rebuild our list with no special advantages.
Its very hard to get the premier recruiters to change clubs....Wright, Wells etc all seem to be on good coin and dont want to move to clubs who struggle on and off the field...

re: Boekhorst.....skilled player who has some tricks going by his first NAB game but is very light and got pushed off the contest a bit.
Colin Wisbey did rate him in his top 30 draft picks but I dont reckon you would find too many other recruiters rating him as highly....
Interested to see how he goes vs the Pies next game.....

Elwood, I'm guessing we re-signed Rogers because SOS hadn't committed at that stage.

Yes and no, they still have to have a reasonable amount of genuine A-graders to form that "good structure". These 'structure over talent' advocates conveniently forget that 18 clubs all have the same idea. I'd say it's easier to get an edge in talent identification than there is for a try-hard club to come up with some bit of tactical nous that can't be countered. It's just that it takes longer.

I'd say adopting both viewpoints would be the smart thing to do. Also, can we clarify the difference between A-grade and elite? Because when someone says A-grade I assume elite.

Interesting role for SOS and maybe the reason Shane walked with the new structure considering SOS had assumed COMMAND OF ALL RECRUITING "and a new GM – List Management & Strategy (Stephen 'SOS' Silvagni, ex 'us', Saints, Collingwood, Bulldogs, GWS) who will take command of all recruiting".
