I hate to admit it, but the thought of losing Gibbs for another potential top 10 KPF is tempting right now.

Maybe the question needs to be asked why have our players gone backwards. Gibbs, murph, krooz, yazz, and others looked like they were all ready to one day dominate this league in their first couple of years. I would say it is no coincidence that majority of our list has flatlined or gone backwards. Our player development has been non existent for years. Maybe we asked too much of these guys too early in their careers ... ie I honestly believe our football club had destroyed krooze's career making him carry 90% of the ruck duties as a teenager into his early 20's and playing him when injured. We have run him into the ground. Hopefully with a long rest he can become the player we all know he can. As for Gibbs, I honestly believe he has been on of our most important player over the years and still is due to the times he has and can carry out as well as his versatility. But again I asked why has his career flatlined ? I don't blame the player and agree that I don't think the carlton footy club is the place for him to become a superstar. At the end of the day Bryce needs to do what is best for him ... And it hurts me to say this currently our footy club offers him little compared to some others.

Also people say compare his career to Selwoods. To me you can't compare ... Have a look at who Selwoods has been surrounded with on the footy field in a top class well run system. I wonder what people would be saying about each player had Gibbs gone to Geelong and Selwood to carlton. Gibbs has been asked to be a top 2 or three player in our team since he was drafted ... And was put in the leadership group from almost day dot ... For a 17 or 18 year old that is not what you call player development ...

The merit of this can be debated all day but the real issue is our club is not bold or brave enough to even countenance such an option.
Based on other decision-making we'll just pay or do whatever it takes to keep the bloke who wears Sticks' old number.
We only let Eddie go because it was the only way to get Daisy.
The club needs to get creative to find these early draft picks we need to breath life into the list - apart from the early choice we're set to get from our ladder position.
But we've never had the balls to make a call on players when they still had value - Lance, Waite ... even Kreuzer (who shouldn't be lumped with Lance just yet).

And is Daisy worth the money we've spent on him? Given where a lot of people see the list was it worth committing so much cap space to a 27 yo? What example does that set for others (like Gibbs)?

At least if you're going to throw some money around make it worthwhile!

Who do you blame, out of interest?
Gibbs must surely take responsibility for the way he plays. No one can coach a bloke fo put his body on the line. Gibbs is soft and that can't be coached. Gibbs won't play where the team needs him, only wants to be the midfielder racking up easy touches. I suppose thats the clubs fault too?

Hang on; I thought he only racked up the easy touches when he was playing in defence?

He had a bad game but he is playing with a broken hand.

People are making such a fuss over what Gibbs might be asking yet won't apply the same scrutiny to the Thomas contract.

It all comes back to decisions by management and how they utilise the cap space available.

Unfortunately it appears they are unable to adapt to the AFL - still stuck in the cheque book days with no salary cap.

Yes agree players also need to take responsibility. But again I ask is it any coincidence that Gibbs is not the only player on our list who has not got to the levels we expect? 98% of our list hasn't. I ask you the question name me a hand full of our current playing list who you believe the club has developed to the maximum potential? You will struggle to name one.

As for Gibbs ... I think you are being way too harsh. I Agree he is no where near is ceiling as a player ... But I have seen him play on and beat some of the best. I have seen him put his body on the line. Maybe it is his laid back nature that confuses you. The fact that he has asked to play in just about every other position other than midfield over the years ... He has lost his ability to play in the midfield and find the footy.

Did this really happen?

This should be applied... to all players

Would have preferred Murphy be the one we're discussing in this context. Think he's more replaceable, it sends a bigger message to the playing group and we've missed the boat to be able to trade him for commensurable value (last two years would have been very handy to do so in hindsight...just saying).

Lets say we do go down the path of letting Gibbs walk and take the free agency compensation - what do you do? Use the picks on a McCartin/Goddard in the draft, and in doing so, take a punt on our ability to develop these kids, or do we on-trade them to GWS for Patton, or GC for Lynch/Day/Dixon whoever?

On trading would be the usual Carlton thing to do - putting all the eggs in one basket.

Draft and develop - but first the club needs to ask are the right people involved in development?

We at Carlton suffer from 'what if' syndrome... what if we let him go and he becomes a gun... I used to think like that

Time has come for those in charge to make the hard calls... would 700k be better spent on Gibbs or someone like Dangerfield etc.
Would we benefit more from keeping Gibbs or potentially have two top 10 draft picks.

As others have asked, do we have the right people in place to make the hard calls?

yes he is... compared to what we pay for carrazzo and judd
we have no box to box players in the side....
if you have no box to box players in the side you better find one.. or more
if you arent going to draft them and you arent develop.. you have to pay...

like if you want meat... you can live a misely existence without it... but if you need protein to sustain.. you have to go buy it.

thats why u get daisy.. who will win our best and fairest... $700k is a bargain .. compared to what we give others.

sure we can pretend.. we have the skilful , hard running types.. the fact is we dont..
we dont even have a leader

the cupboard is bare...

if people cant see that theyre kidding themselves

u want skilfull football effes.. and we dont have guys who can mark , kick or run

it all boils down to that

This happens when you pay one player over a million of your TPP and then more in third party deals and marketing so its edging up around the 1.5 mill.
Hes down around the mill this year... but hes not worth that.
The others compare their sum to that one.

Gibbs is worth 700k.. and someone will pay it.. so hes worth it.
Judd is worth 1.5 cos someone paid that...
Eddie was worth 500k (actually it was less).. but not to us... because if we did9keep him even at 400k we couldnt get Daisy...

Its all relative...
the trick is how do you balance everything and sell a plan to keep your players and at the same time get them to focus on extracting the most of themselves.

Weve failed on both counts.
Eddie has left.. we might lose another this year.. and have extracted little

So youd have to say were a poorly run club.

I want Gibbsy to leaave.. i wanna see him blossom.
Like Eddie i regard him higher than most

Why would i want Gibbs to stay at Carlton and rot???

We all do - but for 700K...for 4 years? Madness.

Haphazard list management again....whether it's Davies and Joseph with their 2 year extensions or Carrazzo getting 2 years; the Waite debacle

Mick and Swann ensuring their mate gets looked after.
