Here is an idea to help our recruitment.

I know well respected players who are currently playing in the WAFL, SANFL and VFL leagues. I speak to these guys on a regular basis about emerging talent and who they think will be drafted and have a long career in the AFL. These guys are spot on with what they know. These players who either play against the new talent or in the same team can tell me how good their skills are (can they kick both left and right, can they kick long, can they think quick on their feet, competitive nature, are they hard or soft in a contest etc).

Here is a suggestion:
Won't do we put some of the captains of these teams in the second tier leagues on our payroll to produce a weekly report on players they think have long term potential? I would seriously consider the thoughts of a regular player who is playing along with or against these future stars.

Why don't we recruit Bryce Gibbs manager. He seems to know a lot about list management

we dont want the hidden ones.. just the obvious ones....
we have been seeking too many hidden gems.. almost trying to prove something... when the obvious is staring us in the face

go the %ers.. much easier

Imagine the outcry if we had had the massive stuff ups that hawthorn have had with their 1st round picks:

In 2005:
Xavier Ellis at pick 3 immediately ahead of josh kennedy and pendlebury.
Beau dowler at pick 6 - bust
Max Bailey at pick 18 - bust
Beau must on at pick 22 - bust

In 2006:
Mitch thorp at pick 6 immediately before Joel selwood amongst many others as well.

If hawthorn had nailed the above drafts, they would be having another dynasty.

..scratch bailey off that list, I don't consider him a bust.. ..injuries cut him down, but he could play..

Er, I'd call 2 flags and a runners-up in 6 years a bit of a dynasty, wouldn't you?

All clubs make mistakes as it's not an exact science. The issue is we have been consistently poor year after year.

I'm not sure Hawthorn is the best example either. :?

Max Bailey? The Premiership ruck man?

Xavier Ellis? The Premiership midfielder?

That's not what Hughes was doing with later picks or most of the earlier ones, for that matter. He only started that when we got desperate. Most of the time he was drafting the bleeding obvious. Most clubs don't draft the bleeding obvious with later picks, they draft on potential. Davies, O'Keeffe, Browne and most of the rest were still available for a reason.

Change recruiting philosophy from taking the best player to best fit for the list out of the best players unless their is a standout kid.
