Flour.

Forgot about that while I was thinking about GIBBS.

I'm happy to be swayed.
Give me some reasons why we are great other than our history.
What do we do really well that separates us from the average clubs?

BV your view is a blatant violation of the clubs constitutional structure. my detailed answer to your question is here, be sure you take notes, and stay positive ----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ssukL9a99JA

I know you're trying to make a positive statement with that C-Man, but to me it starkly illustrates how poorly we have adapted to our home-ground: Etihad. It's a real problem that the ground where we play the most often also seems the ground we play the most poorly on.

Good that we know how to travel. Sort out the home-ground thing and we'll be in business

Not so much a positive statement, although the figures speak for themselves, but I think what it shows is that the group are up to it when they commit between their collective ears.

Capt Obvious says "Mental toughness is where it is at". And no doubt MM is working on it 24/7/365.

well obviously he has no choice but to 'work on it' - but - with the amount of training and physical work required these days a player almost has to have an insane natural hunger and competitive spirit to be a successful 100+ gamer

not sure someone with a wavering hunger and competitive spirit will make it these days no matter how talented they are or how much Mick 'works on it'

BV, On serious note

This forum consistently focusses predominately on negatives, I just felt the need to put a damper on the damper.

The club has already commenced addressing a majority of the points you've raised in your postings. There is a commitment to reduce board numbers, there is an action plan in place for the presidency to be taken up by a new incumbent, the recruiting department has been bolstered, there is new coach who's message is making a noticible impact onfield. Club communication in 2013 has improved immensely. The club has outsantanding facilities. I'd say the fundamental building blocks are not average but well above average from which there is potential for a great future.

By the same criteria set out in your own question above, on what basis can you not feel anything but a positive future (Without breaching your own comparitive boundary of utilising historical decisions) ?

Here's a reason - we can't recruit talented KPPs to save ourselves.

Pick 24 2004 Hartlett
Pick 18 2005 Bower
Pick 36 2005 Edwards
Pick 18 2010 Watson
Pick 34 2010 McCarthy
Pick 42 2010 Mitchell
Pick 44 2011 Rowe

Apart from Josh Kennedy, our drafting of KPPs with our more valuable picks has been disastrous. Who was the last good KPP taken by us in the first three rounds of the National Draft that wasn't a father-son or a top 5 pick? Brendan Fevola. Before that? NOBODY!

The next best are Minton-Connell '86 and Cook '90. We actually did better drafting talls when we weren't even really trying!

Look at our KPPs that can get a game
White - rookie
Casboult - rookie
McInnes - Pick 67 2010
Jamieson - rookie
Henderson - traded in
Waite - Father-son
Betts - PSD

I haven't written off Watson, McCarthy, Mitchell or Rowe, but that might be because I haven't seen enough of them play. Those that do are not glowing in their praise.

I think we are getting there, the barometer is the defensive game plan and its been great over the last 7 weeks.

If only it was there the first 3 weeks.....

Anyhoo, how we go over over the next 3 rounds will directly correlate to our team defence.

And kicking at goal....

And that's because the good kpp (especially the good kpf) nearly always get taken in the 1st round. This is one thing that Essendon* has done better than us.

Well, quite but I still say some have slipped by us in later rounds, too.

We don't recruit KPPs unless we really need them and that's silly given they take time to develop. I tell you, we recruit players on how they'd fit into the current structure. The game comes first and we try to get the players to suit. The problem with that way of thinking is that it never works out how you want it to and the game moves on. In terms of players we've actually drafted, most of the best performed are the ones we've picked where the pressure to fill a need or to nail the selection wasn't as strong.

I think that is a problem when you only go in with one 'highish' draft pick and a couple of junk selections, not much to work with and too much pressure to get it right.

What you really consider as average is our recruiting. And everyone knows it is not an exact science. It is easy to pick out the exception at other clubs. If you talk to Essendon* supporters they will complain similarly about their poor recruiting. Maybe instead of Gibbs we should have picked up Gumbleton!

I think it's safe to say our policy of "Best available" hasn't gone so well, particularly given the gaps we STILL have.

At the time I was happy to follow their judgement, but seeing how Talia has come on really stings.
