Its not the players fault - we have fallen behind because top teams are playing a different sort of contested football in full throttle break neck speed.. presses not that effective its just numbers around the ball in waves...its about the third time in 2 yrs game plans have changed dramatically..it's obvious our coaching staff have opted for a fast, free flowing, skillfull game with plentiful of flair and now behind the eight-ball..coaches need to adapt fast because we are gonna get smashed with the top teams hard running in waves.

You are comparing him with on ballers.

Forget where Gibbs was drafted at. That was 2006. This now. Call it a mistake in picking him but dont blame the player for not living up to what you though he was.

He is out of form at the moment but showed signs yesterday they he was turning the corner.

Only replying to the person who compared them above.

I don't call his recruitment a mistake at all.

I would never have held this opinion last year.

He's having a bad season by the standards expected and should be expected.

My biggest gripe is that he's a soft footballer this season, and plenty of examples prove it. Whether that is by design or instinct is the un-answerable question.

But as I said yesterday was one step up. If next week is another then that's all that can be asked for.

Gibbs was okay today... not brilliant. Just ok.

Gibbs is no where near the output of Cotchin, Martin, Murphy, Pendlebury, Selwood, Shuey or Gaff. He is on par with Thomas.

Potential isn't a word that should be associated with a player in his 6th season of footy and 100+ games.

But continual improvement to get back to his best is what should be expected. Let's see if that occurs next week.

Gibbs was doing as much as Murphy in the last month, but he's just an easy target for those who want someone to bash.

It's uncommon for footballers to have a down patch.

Greg Baum in the Age had him as second best on ground yesterday!? I didn't see that myself, but also emphasises to me what an enigma he is. I do believe it is the roaming position he's given that creates false impressions. In some respects its cushy but in another respect its mentally very demanding requiring split-second decision making. As supporters i don't think we appreciate enough that value he provides on the ground.

Bryce Gibbs has been a disappointment for his entire football career at Carlton. It's only now that people are starting to notice.

Carazzo more important to our structure than Gibbs
Murph " " " " " " '
Add Judd, Scotland, Yarran, Simspon, Betts and Robinson

I was ridiculed 12 months ago for saying this but I will say it again
Cotchin and Martin are light years ahead of Gibbs

This is not trashing a player, it is merely 4 years of observations
For those who keep defending him, keep doing so.....he will continue to disappoint unless he undergoes a significant watershed

This is not about #1 picks. It's about a player with obvious natural talent who hasn't really come on significantly over the last 4 years

Cotchin and Martin are very very good players. Cotchin is scarily good.

As a point of discussion - how much better off would we be if theoritically we traded our number Picks 1 and 20 to West Coast for Judd, kept Kennedy, picked Cotchin in that draft and kept Sam Jacobs instead.

Do we still get Armfield as steak knives?

Wasn't going to happen Agro. Pick 1 - Cotchin at WC & pick 2 Kruezer at Richmond. We would have gone for pick 3 .... & Kennedy, Judd.

Not really on topic of the thread but a bloody good hyperthetical. How about leave everything as is and change the big K for cotchin. In this moment, that would make a massive difference and would make midfield flower scary!

I thought Gibbs was good again. He's solid and skilled. He sets things up.

I do expect more from him, and Martin and Cotchin go pretty good too.
Martin great hard ball player. Cotchin great all round game.

We've got Gibbs and they aint. Would like both of them over at Carlton.

Gibbs would be great in the forwardline, but I understand he's needed elsewhere.
I don't mind the work he does when playing midfield.

Good one Agro. We just might have got both Crotchin & Kruezer if the AFL did not flower with the PP in the 07 year....them's the breaks!

Pretty sure that was 06. We got hampson as a pre-second round PP rather than pick 2 (which we probably would have used on Hansen  ).

Or Selwood...

Listened to Triple M on Sunday. Andrew McKay was asked about Gibbsy, basically said he has copped a lot of critiscism for playing a loose player in defense against Adelaide, partly because the perception of when you don't have a player, it can make you look pretty bad if your not on a player and not getting lots of the ball. Adelaide killed us and no one got much of the ball that game.

He also said that gibbs will play on a hbf and play on an opponent against Melbourne. He said his skills are so important and best used down back.

So until we have a full squad of backman, l cant see gibbsy moved to the midfield.
