Who know show this is going to turn out, but I would say that if Thornton is the sub, we've locked ourselves in to a rotation of three the whole game, because he's a very one dimensional player.

My feeling on the substitute is that the player needs to be either;

1) versatile (ie forward and back)
2) in a position where another specialist runs themselves ragged before the sub takes over (eg tagger or ruck)
3) fresh legs for the on ball unit

The upshot of all this is that my feeling is that clubs will be intending to use the sub every week.

Thornton would be an insurance policy if he's named sub. Carlton would lose the fresh legs element of the equation by naming him.

All will be revealed I guess!
