Well I'm happy. Obviously we still haven't come to terms with our game plan, but our pre-season games have been against quality opposition in Port and Hawks, plus we play West Coast next week.
The Hawks only scored 103pts against us tonight. Last year that would of been 150+, and the Hawks goal scorers were mostly midfielders which tells me our work rate was well down defensively and that our key defenders actually stood up well.
I'm still confident we will finish 8-12 wins comfortably, we have so much upside as a team and individually.
Tonight's best IMO were Gibbs, Murphy, Jamo, Grigg, Simmo, Stevens. Special mention to the cameos by Hadley and Kreuzer.
Did you count Murphs clangers abd turnovers?
Did you notice how Murphy knocked up getting the ball first before he made the clanger? The skill level will come back, its the confidence Murphy gains from being free of a tag that he needs to build on.
yeah sure he got the ball, but whats the point of getting the ball if your going to get your whole team out of position and turn it over?
it's only preseason and he's only young and lots of lads have 'second year blues' he's just a year behind. but while he is playing so badly he is a liability. do the bullant or reserves have any games on? i'd consider playing him and a lower level where he can really carve it up and get some touch back.
on he's last two performances he should be dropped. if he wasn't a number one draft pick and figure head of the club he would be. he's needs a break from the pressure of the ones so he can found some touch.
he is trying as hard as ever but his confidence apears shot to pieces.
he will come good no doubt. actually if he is played next week, give him half a game as a small forward where he can lead up too the ball.
we know about murph and what he can do, so lets see some of the others and let murph find he's touch.
other than that some observations, i dont know the hawks list well but they had a downer last week and seemed to have their full team in just about.
our best team may still not be a match for theirs but it would come up a couple of notches no doubt.
they seemed a lot more progressed than us and i wouldnt be at all surprised if they win the nab cup, and do will in the season proper.
the last 3 quarters were a lot better and one quarter cost us.
with a bit o flower it could have been closer. we really should have kicked a few goals in the last 10 of the third but couldn't capitalise.
we will improve but it will be slow and at times this year we will get out pants pulled down. the likes of judd will straighted us up a up and give us some drive and leadership (provided he is ready to go).
we can see the creast of the hill we are clibming and a 34 point loss against one of the flag favs isn't that bad in teh cold light of day. lets not get to dispondent. half the league didn't make it that far. it will take time and this new group needs to learn from games like this.
