Also Jamison looks to have put on considerable size since last year. Looks big enough to compete with most key forwards.

I only saw the 1st half, but for the benefit of those who won’t get an opportunity to see the game, here's a few observations/comments on the 1st half:

* Our starting 18 was something like-

Grigg Jamo T-Bird
Scotland Waite Armfield
Simmo Stevo Hoops
JR Harts Gibbs
Betts Cloke Edwards

Hammer Carrots Murphy

* I think we’ll see lower scores in Carlton games this year (certainly lower scores against, and probably lower winning scores for). Our players seemed to be instructed to hold onto the ball until a team mate was clear, rather than kick distance to a contest. Accordingly, we went sideways and backwards a lot. Sometimes we over did it, and turned the ball over or players got caught with the ball as we tried to set up out of defence. Possibly lairising (because it was an exhibition game) might have crept into it sometimes too. We looked to honour the player leading towards the ball carrier as often as possible and maintain control of the ball. This game plan requires a reasonable degree of skill, and team mates working hard to protect the player with the ball and make space for team mates etc...

* Coming out of defence, Grigg (who started quite deep) and T-Bird looked to be the designated kickers and the ball was dished off to them quite a bit. Grigg can be loose in defence, and needs to make sure he stays accountable.

* Jamo started on Tarrant and looked like he had played a lot more than 5 AFL games. I think he’s ready to go.

* Waite had lots of the ball across half back. His disposal was a bit inconsistent, but….well, it’s February so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt…

* Armfield looked very keen to get involved, maybe too keen. He gave away a couple of free kicks and I can only remember him having one possession. Body language is very enthusiastic, but it wouldn’t hurt if that body had another 5-10kg of muscle on it!

* I hope Carlton supporters keep their expectations of Hammer in 2008 in check. He looks an exciting prospect, but he is still VERY raw. His leap and agility were impressive, but you could see he is still coming to terms with the game (and still needs to baulk up considerably).

* Stevo kicked a nice goal in the 2nd term and looks in decent nick (pardon the damn awful pun!). A little thing I noticed was that when Kepler Bradley got knocked out (if you haven’t seen the incident, Hammer shouldn’t get cited, but it was a bit clumsy of the big fella…), it took the medical staff AGES to get him off, and Stevo got the boys and took them for a little jog to keep them warm and have a chat. Just a little thing, but it’s good to see Stevo taking some initiative the way a leader should.

* Gibbs, Simmo, Carrots and Murphy looked sharp.

* Harts did a couple of good things, including kicking a goal from 55 metres in the first minute. Presented strongly for most of the half actually. He seemed on pretty comfortable terms with himself about it all too… :P

* JR & Edwards looked a lot bigger, but I must admit I didn’t notice them get the ball too often…

* Ellard came off the bench and got a bit of it. Not much of him, but he looks a real terrier. He reminded me a bit of Andrew Phillips.

* Kreuzer came off the bench and they threw him into the ruck. From what I saw of him, he got his hands on the ball and did OK, without setting the world on fire.

Anyway, that’s enough from me. I guess you can’t read too much into a February exhibition game in South Africa, but there you go… :-D

Nothing to see here!!!
Move along now.

same same.
The upside is; MY expectations were realistic.
We will struggle with a more possession based game plan from a team riddled with players who turn the ball over.
Unless Ratten is a genius and can engineer the games so that only those that can kick deliver the ball, from the backline, or to the leading forward we will be punished very badly.
We must understand that opposition sides let Carrazzo, Bentick, Blackwell etc go free because THEY CAN'T KICK

The good news.
The ratio of can't kick versus can kick is far better and improving all the time.
There is room for can't kickers in a better line up coz you need "can get its."

IMPRESSIVE
Hampson
Kreuzer
Murphy
Stevens

i'm sure there were other that impressed but these are mine.

Overall i'm not too upset but as i said my sights weren't too high.
We all will be amazed at how much Judd will improve us. Not only his ability but also the confidence he gives others.
We must remember we are starting from a very low base.
We are on the right track finally but we are starting a long way back.
We are now focusing on things other clubs have been doing for 2 - 3 years.

Be patient!!

p.s.
Thornton is the most selfish footballer i've EVER seen. He does not care what happens when the ball is not his problem.

How Simpson wasnt our best player is an absolute joke!! He was clearly our best player.
Honestly id be happy if he was captain, courageous for a man his size and always busts his gut!
Murphy showed some class, Carrots always finding the footy. Hartlett hopefully can hold down CHF. Loved Waite's run out of the back line and his disposal early out of there was nice.

I'm sure the ladies enjoyed seeing him walk around shirtless after the game.

Anybody watching their first game of Australian Rules would think we're a bunch of pussies.

Umpires blowing their whistle at the slightest hint of contact. Not that it's their fault, that's just how much the AFL has [REDACTED] up our game.

If it wasn't for my love of the Blues, I wouldn't have any interest in the AFL whatsoever. I'd rather watch local footy any day.

My thoughts...

Cazz - you don't need to look for a ruckman this year. Hammer and Kreuzer will do for us!

The gameplan - this is where expectations of a high finish are a little unrealistic. St Kilda took all of last season to adapt to a new gameplan, and they were trying to make the adjustment with a far more mature and experienced list (this is why Obama's calls of a Saints flag this year are not so far-fetched by the way). Our boys will take at least all of this season to become adept at the new gameplan. Maybe the last five or six rounds will start to look more cohesive on this front.

Russell - boy... I am not the biggest JR fan, but I reckon none of you will be able to have a go at him for shirking a contest this year. Has really bulked up and is hitting the contest hard.

I thought Ellard was terrific. At one stage he pin pointed three passes in a row to sometimes difficult targets.

Agree with people about Hammer but he does still need to improve disposal by foot. The bump was good to see. Elbow tucked in, shoulder to shoulder and into it.

After watching training and getting pretty excited, I thought our disposal generally was poor. It concerned me to see us turn the ball over so much. We will be punished at senior level for mistakes like that. Maybe that’s why I noticed Ellard so much.

Good spirit though. Love to see the team looking like they belong together. Stevo keeping the boys warm a stretching when Bradley was being attended to was a positive sign too. It looked to me as though Freo copied the idea when they noticed us doing it.

Hear, hear!!!

Plus the fact that we'll be playing more kids than most other clubs. A finish somewhere between 9th & 14th is a realistic prediction for us.

Positives:

Hartlett looking athletic, confident and capable up forward.

Kreuzers ability to cover the ground and link up with the play.

Ellard, Pfeiffer looked pretty comfortable with the tempo and moving smoothly with the play with good skills.

Jamo should've been elevated to the primary list. Belongs.

Stevo amongst the action taking 'hits'.

Grigg being used by his team mates

Simmo's courage.

Clokes presence.

Hammer will be a superstar. (who wanted Jetta anyway  )

Negatives:

Bowers decision making/disposal :?

Houlihan coughing up the ball too easy in the tackle :x

Armfield giving away silly free kicks.

For the first hitout of the year there is plenty to be happy with IMO :)

I only watched the first half, will watch the rest tonight.

I thought Ellard looked good too, looks a little like Chris Bond.

JR looks huge. I wonder if we'd be able to use him at CHB on occassions over the next few years.

A couple of impressive taps from Hampson. He still has a long way to go, I'd like to see him getting a regular game, but will need either Cloke or Ackland to be playing a lot of time.

Both free kicks were good tackles with the player not disposing of the ball all players and even the commentators thought it was Armfields.
The umpires were tiggy touchwood. During bthe season proper with Armfield and Betts running around playesr will be kacking themselves to get rid of it.

The "in the back" free was not shown on but I'm guessing a stupid lunge "he'll learn from that".

Simmo was also directing and encouraging in the huddle when Bradley went down. This kid is fast becoming my fave...

Carrazo was the "official" captain last BTW.

In general, our skills are going to kill us with this gameplan BUT I think there were two distinct trails in this game.

First half, play on and run past at all costs. (We looked better)
Second half, hang on to the ball and look for options (skills killed us!)

BTW Jammo made Tarrant look second rate...

oh hang on a minute, maybe Tarrant IS second rate?

Yeah I can see that. The two names I thought of when I was watching him were Bond and Andrew Phillips.

Impressed with the three guys who played in the ruck

Hammer had a decent first half and won his fair share of ball when required to, but Krezeur was very good in the second half.

Cam Cloke will be a bonus once again for us if he can stay fit

Only saw second half.

Grigg and Pfeiffer pluses for me. (Pfeiffer really looks the part)

Third quarter showed glaring disposal issues but there were so many players swapping on and off the bench I'm not sure they knew where they were at at times.

Cloke and Kruezers big bombs were crack-a-fat worthy.

Simpson and Murphy great.

Some nice passages of skillful play late including a succession of pin point stab passes along the boundary line which almost resulted in Murphy kicking a goal.

But it was a true practice match. Both sides pulling out of true contests and tip-toeing over the hard centre area, (particularly when it got wet).

I have a lot more confidence in our depth and ability to see out games this year. Judd, Fev and Stevo in the team adds an entirely different dimension also.

Just a bit overzealous ...shows great intensity though which hopefully rubs off on one or 2 others.

We were beyond crap.

I couldn’t have been more disappointed in this game. The same old players making the same old mistakes and a bunch of youngsters who are showing small signs but still miles off.

Hope the Bullants have set aside no. 32 this year as the navy blue version is getting disgraced.

Impossible to watch this game objectively and not be thoroughly depressed.

Let’s hope Judd is even better than we think… Christ he’ll need to be.

Great to see the boys back in action.

This is not a criticism, in fact we probably had to make the change given the way the game is played these days, but the new game plan/style is going to take some adjusting to. There was a fair bit of 'over possession' especially in the backline. The new instinct seems to always feed it off with a handball, which sometimes advantages the team, and sometimes doesn't. You'd reckon it'll take a fair bit of the year to fine tune the balance between controlling the ball, and quick ball movement.

It will also be interesting to see how some of our lesser skilled players adjust to this style of play.

Hartlett looked good up forward. Kicked the ball beautifully.
Hampson was terrific in the ruck. Looked to be regularly outleaping Sandilands. Shouldn't have anything to worry about from his bump on Bradley. Not even sure why he was free-kicked for it. It was a very good side bump.
Kreuzer also looked good in the ruck. Showed enough to say that he will be very, very good. Competed well in the ruck contests and competed well at ground level. Lay some really good tackles. Kicked a terrific goal.
Stevens showed no tentativeness. Polished, just as you'd expect.
Murphy was terrific as always.
Simpson I thought was our best player. Works hard, is courageous, and uses the ball well.
Like last year, Carrazzo won the ball at will in the contests. Such a beautiful mover in the tight confines of the pack. Expect him to get a lot of the ball this year. Would perhaps like to see him less often as the won at the end of the chain of possessions, if we're going to play high possession football. Just isn't consistenly clean enough by foot.
Was intrigued by Russell being named in the best players. I like Russell, and thought he tackled well. But hardly got a possession that I noticed.
Likewise I was interested that the coach mentioned Edwards as well. I didn't notice him win a possession.
Jamison was good defensively, but looks lost whenever he has to dispose of it. Again might be a bit of a problem, if we're playing possession football, particuarly when coming out of defence. Interesting that Jamison was on from the start of the game, whereas Setanta only got the second half. I wonder if that is a conditioning decision, or whether Jamison is rated ahead of Setanta at this stage?
Waite was terrific in the first half. Tight enough defensively, but fantastic rebound.
I think we might have found one in Pfeiffer. Looked every inch a senior footballer. Would be surprised if he doesn't play most games this year.
Ellard looked small, but smart and skilful. Looked to me to be cleaner with the ball than Blackwell.
Gibbs looks very good when in the action. Uses it so very well, and tackles and competes when needed. Would just like to see him in more contests.
Grigg looked good rebounding out of defense. Used the ball well. From tonight's viewing, I'd expect him to play a lot of senior footy this year.
Not sure I like seeing Bower matched up against medium forwards. Conceded some goals that he probably shouldn't have. I know there's a fair bit of competition, but I would think if he's going to make it, it's as a very agile, rebounding tall (using his pace and agility against big and less agile opponents).

A couple of general comments. We didn't kick enough goals from 'crumbs' or 'general play'. This has been a problem for some time. Our greater midfield depth should help a little, but expect this to be an ongoing problem.

Conversely the opposition kicked too many goals in this way. This too has been a problem for some time. Some were caused by slack marking, but others by really costly turnovers in defence or the middle of the ground. If Walker plays midfield this year, then we've got to hope that Grigg, Armfield, Pfeiffer, Anderson, etc. can step up.

Couldn't agree more, hardly saw Edwards and Russell touch it! Carrots and Simmo should have been in best without a doubt. Who did the best players?

Very good summary and Grigg really impresses me out of the backline. I reckon he'll slot in as the "small forward" defender and has jumped that queue ahead of Joey, Armfield, Brown and Co. Will be very surprised if not in our back 6 Rd 1, especially with doubt on Walks.

Agree with Santy on the bench - it looks like Jamo may have gone ahead of him for a "tall back" possie.

I also thought Cloke was very good at the ruck contests. This guy is a really good ruckman and he amazes me how often he gets his hand on the ball first. If only he were an inch or two taller. Looks like he and the Hammer will share ruck duties for most of the year, with Kreuzer/Ackland doing the cameos.
