The board are on a hiding to nothing if they don't appoint Teague. If they go Voss/Hinkley/Scott/Clarkson, they would want to hope that it doesn't blow up in their faces because the supporters would burn the place to the ground and push for the whole lot to be sacked. Arguably, Teague has to jump through MORE hoops than any other prospective coach. Voss/Hinkley/Scott/Clarkson don't have to show that they can make the side play well, whereas Teague does - and has. We appointed Ratten with zero wins from his stint as caretaker, and some people want him back. Teague has blown that number out of the water and we're still non-committal.

If Teague doesn't get the job because he doesn't want it, fair enough. But if Teague doesn't get the job because we appointed another coach, I'm tapping out.

Not sure what extra hoops you're referring to, but do explain?

As for our wins, maybe the board actually expected us to win around this amount (obviously more in the first half too). And given its the back half of the year, the players are more developed and settled into the game plan and with their roles (with some tweaking from Teague and or above). This is why Bolts go the boot. Remember they traded our 1st pick for a reason, it wasn't just an off the cusp decision. Remember SOSs face when he shook Bolts hand with his steely look and said it's now up to you (or something of that sort).

That's what everyone said about the Adelaide game

I think BS means it will be a good measuring stick. Adelaide are not really a top 8 team going by recent form but it was an unexpected win and a huge tick for the team and Teague. WCE are a top 4 team and premiership contender and we will know more about where we should be at the end of the game. Win or lose and the margin.
Personally, as I have previously stated if we beat 2 of either Crows, WCE, Tigers or the Cats (especially them) plus the Saints. The board would have a very easy decision to make. And on the flip side it should start attracting A-Grade talent without the need for a big name coach.

I think my preferred (but with a likelihood of zero) coaching setup would be Teague as coach with Clarkson in a mentor/coaching director kind of role.

That would be a good option especially to appease the masses, but I take Clarko as a bit of a top dog and is ego driven.

Teague has more votes now than the next 5 candidates combined.

By that I mean, none of the other prospective coaches are having to prove themselves with this group.

It's a double edged sword for Teague in that, he can both prove, and disprove, his ability to coach this group. I think the past month has definitely proven that, and I don't seem to remember this kind of groundswell of support when Barker was interim coach.

What do you expect a mentor/coaching director to do? What's the chain of command; would Teague report directly to Clarkson, who then reports to the CEO; or would Teague report direct to the CEO? What are the pros and cons? Why does Teague need a mentor?

I'm open to such a setup in theory, but in practice I'm not sure how it works, as it how tenable/long term it can be.

Teague has 10+ years in coaching in a variety of roles and at numerous clubs. He's not a novice.

What we need to learn from Teague is if he actually wants the job. We need to establish as best we can what the drivers are for our current improved form and how sustainable can we expect that to be if Teague is our next coach.

If Teague deserves the job then he deserves the job on the same grounds that it would be given to Clarkson or Lyon, or any other of the rehashed senior coaches.

Having said all that, whoever our next coach is, I just want/hope/expect that the next 2–10 years brings consistent finals appearances. And I'm glad I don't have the responsibility of appointing the coach. There's way more pressure on the appointment this time around than there was with Bolts.

I think it's probably a fancy job title I've used to get Clarkson across as a tactical adviser and assistant coach.

There was but it lasted a week, after we beat Port at the G.

Then we went crap & normal transmission resumed

For what its worth

I think if Bolton had coached out the season with 6 wins.... his job probably would have been safe for 2020.

Different times though.
Barker took over the worst team in the AFL and we were just getting beaten up again as supporters. We have now spent the last 3 years of building at the bottom and everyone is not just wanting but expecting success. The start of the year was supposed to be our "coming" and it never happened for various reasons. Teague comes in and delivers what would pretty much have happened with any interim coach, a breath of fresh air and renewed optimism. But to Teagues credit, he seems to have good relationship building skills as well as game day tactics. That's why there is a groundswell. I still don't see him as a messiah of coaching but at the same time we could do a lot worse than him at the moment. The impending question should be answered in the next few weeks when the honeymoon slowly dies off, can he take us all the way, especially when the real pressure is on. The one hoop you refer to is probably less than a hoop given the period of development of the playing group, but more of an advantage for Teague.

Bluey that’s a big if.

Bolton was cooked since arguably the bye round of 2017. I could not see him rallying up the troops let alone win one more game.

I think most of us are on a similar page in terms of Teague or Clarkson.
Clarkson based on his history as arguably the premier coach of the modern era. The queries being can he reproduce at Carlton what he has achieved at the Hawks. And would his fee cost too much in terms of other football department spending.
Teague has achieved more than most of us expected. Beyond an initial honeymoon bump, has has shown good match day tactics, built good relationships with the players and we’ve also now shown we can play four quarters as well as an attractive and attacking style. The queries being can he maintain this over the long term and build a sustainable game plan that holds up once other clubs start to work us out a bit. And is he high profile enough to attract members, sponsors and elite players.

I personally hope that Teague franks his successful start over the next few weeks which would make the decision easy. Failing that, I’d hope for either Teague or Clarkson. I don’t want Ross Lyon, Brad Scott or Hinkley (and I’m getting nervous about the media talk about him...).

Having said all that, I have to believe the Board will make the right call.
They have their kahunas on the line more than any of us and I would hope they have access to more info than any of us.

Yeah but my point is... if 6 wins is good enough for Bolts...
then Teague must be getting close to a hypothetical pass mark

I think we won't have just one coach- there will be a 2 man combination, with Teague filling one of the spots

Hunch or info?

I could see a media friendly figure (Roos/Matthews) there, with one of their roles to be the pressure valve release if the team has a form drop or slump, a bit of extra protection for the coach to keep the wolves away while he does his thing. Instructed to go out and and work with their media mates to control the spotlight.

That sounds logical. I think Bolton definitely suffered when Craig left.
Goodwin is struggling.

Young coaches do best with a mentor.

Bomber and now Hardwick had/have Neil Balme.

There is an article in today's Australian about the coaching role.
At the end of it Teague is quoted as saying even if he doesn't get the job he wants to stay at the club as an assistant.
