Sad MPH. Had the same at my place.

Good thing my 11 yo, whose name is Carlton said he loved Carlton but it was boring footy to watch coz nothing happens.

Couldn't agree more, have thought for a while that we wouldn't win a flag under Mick but that we would end up winning a flag because of Mick & the foundations he was creating. The club is stagnant, catchy slogans & membership drives are short term solutions. The club has no drive or leader. The goal is to win a flag but we don't know how to! How about we try & build the strongest club in the afl, make that our goal & I've no doubt success will follow.

Just feels like we are a plaything for millionaires! If voting rights & all that are diminished then how do we remove the flowers????

I'm thinking the 'blame everything on Malthouse' brigade don't want a new cabbage patch, they want their one eyed, three legged Dolly back that cries "Mama!" whenever you pull its chain.

You can't buy premierships (players) anymore. Carlton was the best in the business at finding the talent and paying for it. Every since we've not been able to buy success, we've been found wanting.

Now look at the top of the club. Wealthy people who control it. And what do wealthy people do best? They find and buy the best people at any cost to bring themselves success.

In business this is par for the coarse. In AFL football it is not due to rules and regulations.

They thought (as wealthy people do) that rules and regulations do not apply to them. How did that workout for the club?

So here we are since 1995 some 20 years later running the club according to the old boys culture.

Sorry to say, but we're going to have to wait a very long time until that culture is gone (if ever) from our club before we ever see any lasting success.

You can sack the coach, sack the recruiting staff, sack players, it won;t make an once of difference.

Our culture, the old Carlton, still remains at the helm where the real decisions are made.

Good clubs, great clubs, start from the top down.

great post.

The minimum expectation from a coach is consistency of message and a sense of direction. That has been sorely lacking for most of the 3 years.

..ten years plus, at least..

whether you agreed with ratten's coaching style or not, it was consistent - the entire team was built for speed/quick ball movement.

Somewhat bemusing that mick was bemoaning the lack of running ability in our list and that the entire comp has started to move in that direction...

Apparently one of the reasons is b/c we can't attract players via FA given how poor our team is... (what's the name of the bloke that did his shoulder last week?)

Two weeks in to a new season and it's a Malthouse bonanza. Three drafts under the super coach and we're royally [REDACTED].

Leading Teams is pseudo-psychological bullshit....

Too many of our players have poor skills. Too many of our players look like school boys after years in the system (do we have a proper gym at the club?). Too many of our players make bad decisions under pressure.

2. Menzel our goalsneak played down back from what I couls see and had a quiet night.
3. Murphy. Kicked one great goal and celebrated well. Otherwise ineffective.
4. Gibbs. Played great footy last year as a midfielder. Played loose across half back it seemed to me. Looks great in a ponytail. So does my 8yo daughter. Got a couple of easy possies at the end.
5. Judd. Great first. Busted his arse for the next three with no support from anybody. Should retire this week in disgust.
6. Simmo. Should be captain. If Murphy had Simmo's heart or tank he'd be a much better player.
13. Yarran. Looked good early but faded. Kept running. Not his fault. One bad mistake when we were still in front didn't help momentum but that happens.
14. Jones. Missed his quota of two per week. Flies against his team mates and needs to realize he is no longer the #1 fwd. Pretty ordinary night.
15. Docherty. Played well early. Great foot skills and will be a great player for us. Faded out but was one of many.
17. Rowe. Shocker. Looks lost. Should have been switched fwd at half time instead of after the game was lost.
22. Tutt. I saw him get one possession for the night. Even if I missed a few, that was a crap game. If he was HF, he needed to run with his opponent when the ball was clear so they didn't just cruise down the wings like they did. First game. Benefit of the doubt but it was a crap game.
23. Hendo. We need two of him. His exasperation before 3/4 time when he asked who was supposed to be filling the space in front of Kennedy was telling.
25. Smith. On again in the first and did nothing all night. Let him get a few games in the twos before even thinking about playing him, UNLESS we drop everybody and just play the kids.
28. Bell. Great first quarter. Then not much. He does chase and tackle but he is an extractor and goalsneak. One of our better players.
33. Everitt. Got more of it than any of the other talls and had a pretty serviceable night.
35. Curnow. One of three taggers. Get rid of two of them and keep just him. He didn't get much footy but who was he on and how did they go?
36. Wood. Thrashed by Natanui whose game should be used as a manual of how to play ruck in the modern era.
40. Jamo. Not even sure who he was on. Quiet night in terms of output but it was a pretty hard night for Carlton defenders.
41. If Levi kicks 2-4 every week and crashes the packs we will have a fiftyish goal full forward who provides crumbs. I'll settle for that to begin with but someone has to teach him to kick. Is Peter McKenna still alive? Leave him at FF and work on his kicking at training.
42. Touhy. Pretty good game from him. Ran hard and got the footy. Too short for leCras in a couple of duels. Not his fault we lost.
43. White.
44. Carazzo. Thanks for your services, Andy but there are too many taggers in the team and Curnow should be it. Quiet night. His strength used to be getting possessions when his opponent was starved of them. Now he doesn't do that. Sorry but your time has come.
46. Ellard. You always get 100% from Ellard but his 100% isn't enough. He is simply too slow and small. He would have been a good player a generation ago but he should never play footy again in the firsts.

That's my take on it. We had about four players who can hold their heads up and they are Judd, an Irishman, a rookie in Bell and a journeyman tall in Everitt.

I mentioned it in the call and those who think hitouts to advantage is a made up stat can look at how Natanui palms the ball to advantage and wish Warnock could do it. He is beautiful to watch at work and will possibly become the best tap ruckman we have ever seen. Close, outside, inside, long to a runner... Beats dropping it at your own feet every day. In the first he won every hit out but Judd and Bell got on the end of them. They shut Judd's run at the footy and all of a sudden the taps were going straight to their midfielders who were clear. I love watching this kid play. If they can build a midfield good enough to take advantage of him, they will go a long way.

We were thrashed in the coaches box as well as on the field. Too slow to react, Mick. A game is like a set piece battle. Your plan goes out the window as soon as the first shot is fired and you have to be able to react or die.

Don't worry. Mymatemick is moulding a team and a gameplan to win us premierships. Just give it time. May still take a while.

It's official, Carlton is as popular as a Leper at a swingers party.
