Only if it was a Carlton Runner.

They can't review it if the FB plays on after the decision. It's a failing in the rules and they played on straight away. Those are the sorts of things that separate the good teams from the rest. The tricks and the discipline.

The umpires would have paid them a free kick plus 2 x 50 metre penalties, (measured at 65 metres a piece  ).

But seriously, there is not a single thing we can do about it.

Menzels high tackle / That centre bounce / Waite's in the back / Yazz being held / and the runner in the dying minutes - they are some dumb dumb mistakes and it's a disgrace.

Just as it was last week in the dying minutes!

But what can we do? Nothing? If Mick says anything he'll be fined! The AFL wont do anything because the umpires are always right.

It pisses me off and it's been going on too long.

FMD, we're awful @ the start of June with any wins. I reckon' only GWS in the last 3yrs including a couple of Geelong near misses, PTA thrashing, Essendon* near miss....Bali AFL viewing has not been kind.
Again, that's 2 games I've seen with the volume off & we seem to be reamed with the critical umpiring decisions. Not a basher but we've been royally screwed over. Centre bounce, Yazz, Menz & not sure about Waite's non goal to mention a few.
Jeffy does not like that pocket....seemingly something scares him down there. Unacceptable. Thought Waite was ordinary too (decent start) but there must have been some thought to sub him pre-game with White as the sub. Was Brock ordinary too? Started well but always chasing tail or out of position when it mattered?
Liking Docherty's & Thomas's attack on the ball & Everitt was good in close.. Army's run is much needed. Good work Gibbons, Cas & Yazz in patches. Menz is a goer.
Much better effort all round but devastated to lose - however gallant defeats will be no issue when it comes to the draft position we may end up with (not condoning any form of tanking as it's a disease) in what has turned out to a disappointing year (was the crowd piss poor tonight?).

Not going to watch the game. I'll wait for Wookie's Carlton-only highlights and pretend we won.

In 1968 we won the GF against Essendon*.
Geoff Blethyn was the Essendon* FF against Lofts.
If I recall ( and it was a long time ago) Lofts got two frees because Blethyn went too early and took marks or maybe missed them but got hands to the ball. Why? because when he jumped onto Big Wes's shoulders the ball was more than 5 yards away. Blethyn missed one or two kicks at goal.
Warwick Capper made a career of going early. Walkers non MOTY had more hang time than Blethyn's.

We won a flag on the back of those wrong decisions. Sometimes they go your way and sometimes they don't.

Could this have clarified the situation?

Umm, if you mark the ball you can go as early as you like. It's called positioning. Invalid rhetoric in the context with regards to Capper & Walker and free kicks (you'll need to confirm if they were marked or not by Blethyn as hands on the ball is not good enough).

Absolutely. The most glaring non call if you ask me.

They got their goals easy ... we laboured for ours.

Our lack of composure under pressure is really telling. Very evident when we tried to get the ball out of defence. I cannot work out how MM when coaching Collingwood nearly always played on from an opposition behind ... we don't ... the best way to get a ball out of defence is to run it out.

We have to start weeding out players that are slow, lack skills and composure. We will never catch the likes of Geelong with these types.

Good post. We just don't have the mental toughness & composure to turn a lead into a win.

It was a good effort but we are still a long way off.

Or what about Mclean's handball to Johnson which ended up with Horlin-Smith kicking the goal

He needs to go.

I'm talking about 1968. Not now. That's the whole point. Umpires deciding what's right and what isn't at the time.
I haven't got time to watch the entire 1968 game just now but i will later just to check it out and let you know.
Essendon* supporters reckon they lost that game because of frees not paid. Nothing changes.

McLean has lost the plot this year.
He looks slower.. Older.. Less skilled.
I wouldn't be surprised if there is something wrong with him.
Either way we should have tried to trade him last year.
The slow types don't cut it in today's game.

McLean, Waite, Touhy and Garlett were ordinary last night

as Mick has stated you can't have too many passengers in your team

we rely on too few to win games and is simply not sustainable

the lack of support for Gibbs and Murphy was obvious last night as they both played great games

normally when your best players play well you win

unfortunately we don't have the depth within the 22

we need more midfielders and a good key forward

at least Menzel and Doherty look like good long term players who have some skill

need to find a few more over the next few drafts

Remember when the game was the game and coaches and players took the field not having to worry about which way a rule was going to be interpreted from one week to the next?

Remarkable how emphasis on rules is now a week to week proposition.
