If it really is 5 years at $500 a year I have no real issue with it. Values him at a good player level and a long way from the elite. IMO that's about right.
I agree. I expect him to continue to improve the longer he plays in midfield. And perhaps if the side can improve over the next couple of years, it'll help him to improve as well. Good deal. And could potentially be a bargain.
The only question for me is the benefit? Our list is poor and ageing. What are our realistic expectations in the next 5 years and how can Gibbs contribute. Having him run around getting 30 possessions a week in a bottom side doesn't help much. Unfortunately the current system doesn't allow for sentiment.
If we let him go we would probably get a pick around 4-5 plus more Salary cap room which can now be stockpiled. There is then a real chance we could get another very good player but someone for 10-12 years.
I like Gibbs but I really do question the benefit of keeping him. I don't really see him as a leader either. From a pure business point of view it lacks logic.
Fair points. I am not unhappy at all that we have kept him, but it could be argued (as you have) that the better business decision would have been letting him go. But, rightly or wrongly, sentimentality is more prevalent in the Australian sporting culture than it is in other parts of the world.
I guess the other side is that as we have so few classy and skilful players, can we really afford to dispense with the few that we do have?
