Agree Agro I wonder how many goals and goal assists he would have if we could leave him permanently forward - every time he goes forward -our forward line looks better - actually leads up to the ball - only issue I have with him on the forward line is that he is sometimes too unselfish

I reckon given a few weeks up forward he could become one of the missing pieces of the puzzle for us.

A bit harsh.

IMO he was a great mark at the U18 level and got drafted at pick early for that reason. He marked well enough to hold a key post down back whilst Jonathon Brown ruled the roost at CHF. He was a CHF. He could always mark. Came to us and could mark. People remember the mark he dropped in the goal square which could have won us the game. He can still mark.

I reckon he did go through a period up forward when he seemed to have concrete hands. Obviously feels very comfortable and confident now at senior level. He's a class act. And if we can find a way to play him forward regularly, it's going to make us much harder to beat.

Yep. Was bronx cheered after taking a grab during the Sydney game at Etihad in 2011. The fact he was struggling might have also had something to do with the fact it was only his second game back after missing 2 months (hip?). Was probably mainly from the Save Fev posse.

Boundary line Armfield goal didn't make the AFL highlights package of the game. Some people are not easily pleased....

Had another great view of the game from L2 at Etihad...

The great----

Walker's dominance, but maybe that's also because he's in my Supercoach.

Bootsma - He attacked every contest. I love how he has turned his weakness (body) into a strength. Waits until the last moment to use his athleticism to jump into a spoil. He did it time and time again, even after taking some hits. Get around the Boots. He's a fantastic warrior on the field. I wish there were easy stats for spoils, because he racked them up time and time again on Wilson who did SFA for GWS.

Kreuzer superb, and Giles is no slouch. Also led the tackle count for the game.

Curnow - Fantastic in the guts game.

Garlett - Must be a push for AA. Has been superb all season.

White - His best game for the club albeit against the cellar dwellers. Completely nerfed O'hAilpin, before doing a great job on Cameron in the last.

Jamison - Must also be an AA consideration. Has been outstanding every week.

Not so great---

We went into show off mode at times yesterday and it became unstuck.

Scotland - I'm seeing the game finally pass him by. I'd be surprised if he lasts beyond this season. He was probably the weakest link out there on the weekend. Got busted HTB a few times, turned it over, and got outplayed by his younger opponents.

Murphy - Largely ineffective when the heat was on, but piled up some late game stats. Hopefully this was a strategy to give him game time while keeping him out of the bashings in the middle. Expect better against the Bombers.

There's not quite enough for me to be confident in the next two weeks. I'm not sure we're seeing enough aggression and "try and stop me" attitude, but the confidence is growing. Weird to say that after a near-100 point victory, but I look at the overall sum of the parts, and the next month might be a bit of a reality check.

I do think we can beat the Bombers if everyone is switched on. I don't rate us against Hawthorn or Sydney the way those teams are travelling.

Probably the biggest change that has been implemented by Malthouse since he started.
Push forwards up the ground and leave the forward 50 open for the speedstars to do there work.

Pretty sure that was already happening under Ratten...

That's right, you play to your strengths and ours is that we have the best small forward combination in the league but beyond that it's ambiguous at best. Contested footy (marking and at ground level) is just not our strength. We have players that we've brought in for contested footy but they have their weaknesses which limits their effectiveness. Yes, McLean is doing pretty well but it's not the likes of him that is winning us games of football, he's merely keeping us in it against the lesser sides whilst others are doing all the damage.

That's why I say you get the players you 'want' and then needs virtually take care of themselves - I don't think we've been doing it that way.

..agree that the small fwds of betts, garlett, yarran and army, as an awesome foursome,, are first class.. ..murphy resting up fwd is dangerous, and menzel coming thru the ranks will further improve this team strength..

..in regards to contested footy, we're actually better than average, and are top bracket.. ..we're one of the better contested teams, though we have yet to play hawks nor swans [cats are average contested funnily enough].. ..sometimes perception doesnt match stats in this regard, i just think we can play dumb footy which undoes a lot of our good work, and being a good contested team uses up energy which is then lacking when we turn it over..

Is Kevin Bartlett on the selection panel?

I was watching it after seeing the match on TV and thought "have I missed something here". If Bartlett was on the selection panel maybe didn't want to be upstaged. The other Armfield goal made it. Maybe the person putting together the video got the goals mixed up.

What should make the clubs highlight package is Armfield's left foot pass to Menzel in the first quarter, here is a player who when he arrived at the club could barely even be described as a reliable kick on his preferred right foot - to hit Menzel lace out with his left foot was superb and got me even more excited than his goals.

Like I have kept on saying recently one of the few players on our list that has improved EVERY year since he has been on our list - which says something given our player development during the past 5 years has really been putrid.

Armfield is a shining light and I shudder to think how could he could have been over the past 5 years if we had even a halfway decent player development program.

He shouldn't have played. He missed the preseason and he was rushed in when he didn't have a fitness base let alone match fit. Really disgraceful of the then MC to select him.
