Hmmmmm........lets see now. Here's our choices......

Do we play a practice game at Princes Park for nothing infront of 2,000 and sell a few snags

or

Play a practice game at Etihad infront of 25,000 with national TV coverage. With a chance to win some minor silverware, excite the supporter base, increase the supporter base, get our Sponsors on TV, have a solid hit out before round 1 and pick up a sizable amount of free money win or lose the game?

Good point.

I am taking it 100% seriously.

You know when they introduce Dermott Brereton on tv what do they say?

"Dermott Brereton, 5-time day premiership player and 5-time night time premiership player"
It adds to his status that he has been involved in 10 premiership teams- 5 of them night/pre-season flags.

In the English game of soccer they treat the Carling Cup? or whatever they call it these days (not sure as I don't watch soccer anymore) with less seriousness than the season title, but either way - both are chances for silverware.

I think it is very important for Carlton, a club which is way behind Hawthorn, Essendon* and Collingwood on membership and needs to make every post a winner. I am praying that Carlton wins. Brisbane are a vastly improved side this year and should challenge for the top 8.

Didn’t mean all that much to me if we made the GF or not. Now that we are there though, happy to treat it as a full dress rehearsal and have a crack.

I acknowledge the side benefits as Cazz has detailed.

That being said, would take a 100 point thrashing this week as long as we win round 1.

As we all know, we have quite a brutal first 5 rounds so that is where my focus is at present.

Be great to see the game at Princess Park. Great old time atmosphere, better surface, heaps of old time Fitzroy supporters and those awesome snags.

We'd get 20 000 easily.

What a great idea. Someone ring the AFL.

I didnt know how much prize money was on offer, until I read this article :

http://www.footyprophet.com/blog/files/ ... cb-13.html

Not saying that it should be dramatically increased - But as it stands, it's a figure that really seems to be a bit on the low side - even for just a preseason cup.

$200,000 might sound a lot, but it certainly isn't what it used to be - It wouldn't go far - even if a clubs was canny.

I reckon it was about the same amount when South Melbourne/Sydney won it back in 1982 - although then it was a mid-season competition rather than a pre-season competition.

I will be having dinner in the CBD building up my carbs and proteins before seeing the Mark of Cain at the Hi Fi Bar

Saw The Mark of Cain at the Golden Plains Festival on the weekend and they rocked (as usual).

Pity John Stanier is touring with Tomahawk at the moment, but the fill-in drummer was pretty good, despite looking about 16 years old.

Their new album is really good and it's great to have them back. One of the most underrated Australian bands of the past 30 years.

Hope you enjoy it mate.

Should win this.

Bears are on the improve, but have only beaten GWS, GC, Hawks with about 8 of their best 22 and Collingwood with something similar.

Leunberger again in doubt, so our rucks should dominate. Bewick as a medium/small fwd kicked 4 last week, so interested to see who gets the job.

Pies midfield was missing Pendles, Swan, Thomas and Ball - enough said.

Lions have improved, but Blues by plenty.

Funnily enough we did the same thing in the 2009 semi-final against Geelong - and in doing so gave up a chance to make the final - and copped a heap of criticism from the media for doing it.

Cazzesman has summed it up well for mine....great opportunity for the club. Doesn't mean we can't tinker and try a couple of kids, but we would have been playing this week regardless....better it be on tv, for money and with promotional opportunity...than in Mandurah or Darwin.

Two things....firstly between 1978 and 1986 a selection of teams from the SANFL, WAFL and representative teams from Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania also competed - mostly on Tuesday nights, throughout the season.

Secondly...the prize money is $142,000 for the winner. The club earned $15,000 for each win in the lead up to the final.

It's the heat that makes me this way...but if the nameless person is going to write an 'article'...might be a good idea to do some research first.

It wasn't all plain sailing when playing the interstate teams - in 1980 after the Harris/Jezza turmoil we were flogged by Sth Freo by 91 pts

Cazzesman made perfect points.

We've geared ourselves to this point so why shouldn't we want to win?
The player management has been efficient to now and we'll get several wins if things go to plan.

Why hate on something that is good for the club? I don't get it.

..let's face it, player management, structures, introducing new players etc etc, the lead up games have all been about experimentation and management, this final will be our first full dress rehearsal before the season begins.. ..i dare say if we were out of it, we may still have been experimenting.. ..as i said before, us and brions gets a full real hit-up a "round" before the rest of the competition.. ..while other teams are shaking the rust of pre-season off their teams during the first round, our teams will be right to go.. ..we ought to have an edge on the rest of the competition for this reason, and with our harsh start fixture wise some early wins will really give us a boost..

Although the plan is to get to the game with the family, I'm just wondering if anybody can confirm if it is being shown on free to air? A couple of sites show both Fox and CH7 as broadcasters, but the CH7 guide does not list the game? - sorry if the topic has been covered elsewhere
