There is no reason why it can't be both.
There are many examples in business of friends being successful partners.
Both theses guys were leaders in a successful team, and whilst being enabled by Parkin,
the leadership group drove the players to win.
I have no problem with people questioning AM's ability;
what disturbs me is that he appears to come under more scurtiny because of his history.

Hang on, now that I think about it, being a Paediatrician is not a whole lot different to being a Vet.

Except that when vets stuff up they don't get sued they just give you the business card of a good breeder so you can buy another one 

The whole point is that it doesn't matter whether your a vet or neurosurgeon or other medico or sports management graduate. It's irrelevant in regard to the current appointment, providing your smarts experience and CV justify the appointment. People are just making fun of the whole professional background issue.

Macca's been working at the AFL for the past 7 years, and has always been the consumate professional both during and after his playing days. I have no reason to doubt that he'll do a good job.
And for those worrying about a 'jobs for the boys' mentality at Carlton, wasnt Peter Dean overlooked for the Bullants job in favour of Robert Hyde ? Or was that just something that was conveniantly overlooked in the negative ramblings....

Perhaps....but how did PD get an interview? I'm looking to see where the position was advertised and it hasn't shown up yet. Was it actually advertised? Many coaching roles are advertised on AFLVICs website but I haven't seen anything of this one.
You dont know what will fall out of the tree if you dont shake it.
Lets hope the best people are being sourced instead of the best of a couple of candidates.

Not all positions are advertised. My wife and I own a small business which she runs. We recently had a staff vacancy. Didn't advertise, but made our position known to some fellow traders (who we rate), and received recommendations on some likely types. Actually only spoke to one, and hired her. My wife didn't have the time or inclination to trawl through a stack of applications, most of whom wouldn't have come close.

So in effect our newest staff member was ''headhunted''. Word of mouth is the norm in country towns. Might seem unfair to some but then fairness can be a scarce commodity particularly in business. Oh, one golden rule we have is ''do not hire friends'', for obvious reasons.

Proper mates are the ones you have a good enough relationship with so that they can actually tell you when you are being dill and get through differences of opinion when they inevitably arise. Yesmen come in all shapes and forms and not being a mate and/or ex-Carlton doesn't mean you aren't going to get one.
Do you seriously believe that if we are say, 2 wins 10 losses come round 12 next season that the hard call won't be made despite the contract.
