for those who aren't old, senile, lonely and miserable like AGRO the VISY and the TD corporate hospitality info was posted purely as information.

VISY not renewing there corporate hospitality package from TD could mean many things like.....

feeling the strain from the economic down turn

not renewing the contract as we are getting screwed in the arse by the stadium deal at TD or

VISY could spend the $100,000 of hospitality directly through the Carlton football club instead

Fair point Melvey. I thought it was an interesting bit of info and didn't really warrant the response it got.

I don’t post very often but i read quite often. Unfortunately i am not in the know about the going on in the club so figure if i have nothing informative to say then why post.

On this topic however i think i have some justification for posting.

I lived in Malaysia for several years, smack in the middle of KL, I was closely involved with many aspect of Malaysian society including Indian, Chinese and of course Malay.

I am a mad Carlton fan and have been for years. My 3 years in Malaysia was during the dark days and i think i found out about the draft penalties on TBV. I missed the footy like mad and spent a great deal of time trying to get my local workmates into it.

Anyway, loads of Malaysians asked my a great deal about our game and what it was about. Malaysians are very open people, sure the country has some political issues etc just like any country but the people are very open and love Australians. Don’t let anyone tell you different; all that Keating "recalcitrant" crap was merely media hype up (Mahathir is not missed in malaysia now by many). I was there during the World trade disaster and Australian involvement in Afghanistan and even that although not ideal for Australia was nothing more than a minor political inconvenience. There was no wide spread boycott of Australian goods as one poster suggested. In fact Australian bloody everything is on offer there 24/7. Better Aussie Beef there than in Sydney. The winne is really crap though and very expensive but you will have no trouble finding many Australian wines.

Malaysians are mad about anything foreign particularly sports. Their own sporting prowess is somewhat limited, we certainly wont be getting any draftees from their however their interest in sports is mad.

I bought my then Malay girlfriend a Carlton jumper which I know she wears around and I know that some Malay watch the Grand Final.

I met many many Malaysians who have studied or new someone who studied in Melbourne and I always said to myself “When are the blues going to get into Malaysia. I even wrote an email about 3 years ago to the club suggesting this. I also suggested that they focus on Malaysian international students in Melbourne and develop some type of program where Carlton takes them to a game and introduces them to the game and club. Even some type of International student membership package”. I got a reply but it was more or less dismissed. Well now I say again focus on international students, there are loads of them from Malaysia, many go home after studies and many stay. When they go home we have the Carlton message spreading and when they stay we tap into an untapped local market. I know people who fit this bill exactly, there are many more to market to.

There are Australian product display weekly in the twin towers and I hope the Blues will be having these also. Get the players over there, get some displays in shopping centres, Malaysians spend most of their free time in shopping centres. If the Blues can make this a good deal for Tourism Malaysia I am sure the Blues can benefit far more than by the $$ they receive for the deal. There is an entire country waiting to be Carlton supporters.

As for the posters who call Malaysia a dump, the people rude, pushy, dirty etc…. blah blah blah.. I can tell you I have heard this many many times and most of the time it is due to an arrogant culturally inept and blind, often drunk Aussie’s with attitude inadvertently using their Aussie social values to judge a person from a very different culture. More often than not these are Australian corporate business men or members of our esteemed armed forces.

Malaysia is a fantastic country, fantastic people, the best food you will find in the world and I think Carlton joining with Tourism Malaysia is one of the best idea I have heard from any AFL club. The Malaysia Truly Asia campaign which has been running for many years and culminates in a very large and colourful parade of all social groups of Malaysia through the streets of KL is a fascinating spectacle. It is the most colourful thing you could ever see in one place. I recommend Malaysia particularly if you can go there to see this parade.

Any way, I have ranted enough.

Nice work Blues on the new innovative deal.

What a great post from a cultured Carltonian.

He must be from Bondi.

We should have a beer together to discuss the Carlon conquests of yesteryear and to a successful future.

I'll PM you

I'm in Kuala Lumpur at the moment and discussed our new sponsor with the locals.

without saying who was now sponsoring the Club, my local business partners correctly guessed it was Tourism Malaysia.

the current PM of Malaysia is "retiring" in March 2009 and one of his most loyal supporters is the Tourism Minister.

so the locals take on it is a case of "spend" as much as you can while you still have power and suppport from the current PM.

this is how Politics work in this country, the outgoing Tourism Minister is spending as much of his budget while he still has the support of the PM.

So once the new PM takes office in 2009 he'll bring in his own Ministry and the current Toursim Minsiter will lose his job and as a result the sponsorship will unlikely continue on beyond next year.

So it's a short term arrangement clouded by the local political scene.

The new tourism minister is unlikely to continue on with this sponsorship as it wasn't his decsion in the first place.

Unless the Club can sweet talk their way in continuing this arrangement we'll see this deal end at the end of the 2009 season.

Boo hiss Boo. Who invited you here

I can't see a $1.5 mil sponsorship occupying the ministers time. More likely it was made by the Tourism malaysia board I would think.

Nice post Tumi2
It's great that you have your opinion and I respect it.
I also have mine and I'll stick to it.
I'm 58 and have lived in Australia for about half my life and have packpacked my way through and visited several European, Asian ,Oceanic, Northern, Central and South Ameircan countries so I feel qualified to talk about other cultures as much as I like and to compare them with what we have here. I am married to a woman from another culture so I am pleased you didn't mention the word'racist' in your rant about people who call Malaysia a dump, which I presume was aimed at me.
And, yes, I was a member of our Esteemed Armed Forces and proud of it.
Compared to some of the other countries in which I've lived and travelled, it's a dump.
I'll take the money, though.
As I said, nice post and well said.

Famous Australian football club coming to Penang

Quote:
Malaysia will get a huge tourism publicity boost when the famous Carlton Football Club officials and players make a three-day leisure visit to Penang from January 26, 2009.

The club will take along a TV crew from Channel 10 station and leading football writer Mike Sheahan and a photographer from the Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper.

Apart from daily reports in the newspaper, the television station will have live crossovers throughout the three days in its news and sports bulletins.

“This will be fantastic for Malaysia,” Tourism Malaysia’s Melbourne director Putra Hilmy Elias told Bernama.

Tourism Malaysia has signed a sponsorship package with the Carlton Football Club, often referred to as the Manchester United of Australian Rules Football.

Quote:
Leading the 24 Carlton visitors to Penang will its patron, Richard Pratt, Australia’s second richest person with a reported fortune of about A$5 billion. He will fly to Penang in his private jet with club president Steven Kernahan, chief executive officer Greg Swann, captain Chris Judd and seven of its best players.

The others will travel by Malaysia Airlines.

Apart from light training in Penang under senior coach Brett Ratten, and sightseeing, the visitors will feature in TV promotional work for Tourism Malayasia to be shown in Australia.

Go Blues

The Dogs will visit a new tortilla factory in Epping...

Geez we have come a long way as a club. Could you have ever imagined 3 years ago that our club and its players would ever being doing something like this? I love the fact that King Dick is going along. Enjoy it boys and feel privileged that you are playing for the mighty blues.

Not quite as cool as that story, but there's a free plug for the TM website on CFC too...

Come on BH it's not that bad being compared to one of the most marketable brands in the world

Yes I am a Man Utd supporter but West Ham are my second team and am just as happy when they win (as long as it is not against the red devils)

It will be interesting to see who the six players picked to fly in the private jet will be. Hope it doesn't create any jealousy or backstabbing.

"(Pratt) will fly to Penang in his private jet with club president Steven Kernahan, chief executive officer Greg Swann, captain Chris Judd and seven of its best players".

 how pissed-off would you be if you were judged the 9th best player

(although biz/first class to KL on Malaysian ain't no hardship gig either)
