He was on top until he injured his shoulder, I think Pav got on top after that, but credit to him holding him to 4 goals is a great effort. Should get the gig on Hawkins next week.

Pav got on top when irish went off or was still debilitated by the shoulder, just as well irish was there because Pav showed up Waite.

I'm not convinced with Waite at CHB :? Was much better being the spare man. And if that's the case then i'd prefer him at CHF.

Looking at the key stats at 3/4 time, we should have been 4-5 goals up considering the dominance. We were 3 points down.

Awesome effort from the midfield and backs today. Great, great effort.

Agree Teaguey we shouldn't waste Waites atheltisism by using him as a spare man. After all a spare man is all about blocking the space and being creative when coming out of defence. Waite turns it over too much coming out from defence I'd rather see him as another option up forward.

Why on earth would you cop flack for saying that? It was there for everyone to see today.

His best game this year up until he got injured. When he came back you could see his shoulder/arm wasn't right but he still did the job as best he could.

Top effort Setanta.

I thought I'd cop some flack as Irish Bashing on this site was more popular than dwaft tossing in the 80's. There were quite a few on the delist Irishmen bandwagon but strangley they have remained very, very quiet tonight.

As has been stated before Setanta has been the victim of his own versatility. Used to cover holes all over the ground and criticised for not being a natural in any position. Blind Freddy could see that the big Irish lad is a natural defender, but list deficencies, injuries and a new coach's ego have ruined his confidence, and almost his career.

Hopefully this performance highlights his value to the team and also underlines his position on the field. If the MC and coach can swallow their preconceptions we might actually have another piece of the premiership puzzle in our hands.

Now unleash Aisake and see what else we have got right under our nose!!

Apologies anyone????

I think Setanta was our best defender today and he played almost half the game injured. For those who actually saw the game live a lot of his work off the ball and agression really did a lot for the team. Whoever calls for his axing at the end of season doesn't understand the game, pure and simple.

Ratts - please note: HE IS A DEFENDER!!!

When the big Irishman left the field in the third quarter after a hit he received shepherding a team mate Waite went to Pavlich and the big Freo gun grabbed the ball a couple of times and was instrumental in their comeback.

I know I'll cop some flack for this post but to hell with it. Sometimes the truth just has to be said even if it is not too popular.

Good post :-D

Being at the game really showed how hard the big Irishman works off the ball, and also gives you an appreciation of his run, giving an option out of defence. Used the ball really well too, apart from 2 mistakes in the last quarter, but I think his shoulder might have contributed to that.

Went to the game with 2 others who had him in our best as well. Well done Setanta, stood up when we needed you most!! 8)

*the first goal to Pavlich doesn't count in my book. Bigger diver than Monga Lloyd*

funny thing is after game I thought @#$%&! if he grows in confidence myabe Ratts is right, maybe he could play as a forward

seriously, he began to grab marks, he ran (to the right places) his kicking etc were excellent - particularly as his confidence grew and his movement up the ground was fantastic.

am I contrary or what!

Weird more like it Dannyboy :P

Setanta at CHB/FB, Waite CHF. If things go awry do the swapperoo, big deal.

In his close to 50 games the position that he has looked most likely to cement is in the backline, i just don't see how anyone could have a different view. I certainly have no idea why Ratten thinks he's a forward :? I truly am flabbergasted he thinks that way. Its bloody obvious to me.

I loved the way Setanta dropped Pav and gave the 50 away before the first bounce, it was a great investment.

Played a ripper game today Santy.

I vote to keep him back also.

No I'm not sorry. I was thought he was struggling so I said that. I didn't think he would make it based on the season to date, but that was just an opinion. I wasn't bagging him, just trying to evaluate where he was at. I was hoping and praying that he'd prove me wrong and yesterday he did.
I'm rapt. But now please oh please Ratts leave him in the backline and lets develop him in this position for a while and see how it goes.

oh and BTW, I was honestly stressing when he went into the rooms injured. It was a sinking feeling and I actually think felt it could cost us the game if he didn't come back on

VERY INSPIRATIONAL STUFF FROM SETANTA. I thought he was well in our best 5.

It's worth noting that for the short period that Setanta was off the ground, Freo kicked 4 goals!

Hopefully, Ratts can see that we need him more as a full back than we do as a forward.

Setanta, along with Bower, Thornton & Jamo, is looking like a defensive set up that in time will be dreaded by the top 8 sides.

I think that Ratten nthre the challange out to Sentata with the job a Pavalova and to his great credit he responded.

The thing that I though was so great about Carlos's game today was the run and carry he gave rather than the usual shoulder to shoulder fist it away stuff. This is the peice that has been missing from his game and why Ratts thought he would be better in the forward line.

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/y ... 89785.html

Good to see Ratts give him some praise to, just shows that he give credit where it's due

"Ratten said, it was the club's youthful back line that helped win the day. "I know (Fremantle) players kicked goals, but Setanta's role and Bower and Waite were the three I thought really stood up today. I thought they were great for us."
