I believe we have made a real mistake asking Ratts to be caretaker coach for the remainder of the season. For a start it is totally unfair on him to have to prove his worth with this list and some possible thumpings to come.Yet we could find ourselves in the very awkward position of replacing him, despite some genuine improvement, and the risk of damaging a relationship with a favorite son.It would have made far more sense to appoint Libba or TD who have no ambition or real chance of the getting the job and let Ratts apply unconditionally.I personally hope Voss is named coach but also hope there isnt a huge fallout following the decision.

Well, first, who else should've been picked instead of Ratts?

Second, why should we go for anyone else if Ratts proves to be the best guy for the job by the end of the year?

i have been very impressed with Ratten's press conferences. As a favourite son of the club, if Ratts gets the job after 6 weeks of solid improvement, he'll be extremely marketable next year.

I hope that the marketing aspect of it all is not a factor for the admin.
The biggest marketing improvement of all will come when we start winning games.
That should be the only concern for whoever is given the job. Take care of winning games and showing improvement and let the marketing take care of itself/by marketing professionals.

On the radio today, Voss was said to have completed initial interviews with both Carlton and Essendon* which prompted Leigh Matthews to say that he thinks that Voss will be successful, but for him to be successful he needs to have a quality list.

Does this mean that Matthews is telling Voss to stay clear of Carlton because of our ladder position and lack of depth?
or
Does it mean that he is telling Voss to stay clear of Essendon* because of an ageing list?

Either way, I don't care because I will be very disappointed if Ratten doesn't get the job.

Probably means he's telling Voss to steer clear of the Dees!! :)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE subcommittee....................Interview Chris Bond. My gut feel is that he will be a great coach if given the opportunity. Only a feeling that's all.
PS. Also have a gut feel that Voss is finally getting spooked by all the people telling him he should serve an apprenticeship and is having doubts. Expect Voss to remain in the media in '08

I've been giving this a bit of thought opver the last week or so and am starting to have second thoughts about Voss. My question would be - do the players really want him and will they play for him. My concern is that is things don't start happening it's an easy out for the players to say this guy doesn't know what he's doing. Would they have anymore respect for and want to play for Ratten. I really don't think there is anyone else in the equation unless Pratt can pull off a miracle and lure one of the more higher profile coaches away from where they are.....and if I were them why would you come anyway...Money!!!!!...perhaps not....fat good it did Pagan at the end of the day I'm sure he would have taken slightly less and had the support that he needed rather than the cash. My opinion like others is that it's Vossy's job if he wants it otherwise we will settle for Ratts.

Rumour (like most rumours one never can tell!) has it that Essendon* have already got their Coach and have had him for a long while but it could turn out to be another Wallace/Sydney scenario due in part to the amount of coaches currently on the market as well as those that were expected to go are now at the top of the ladder namely Thompson and Laidley.

2 things: the powers that be at carlton have known for some time that pagan wouldn't be at the club in 2008. guys like bond have been/are in the mix, but where possible both parties try to keep these things a bit quiet.

secondly, if voss was having doubts about his lack of experience, it's an assistant's role he'd go to next year, not the media. He won't gain any coaching experience in the channel 10 box. If we're going for a young coach, and voss decides that he's not up to senior coaching next year, I doubt he'd come to us: he'd probably want to apprentice under someone with more experience than the young coach we've publically stated we're after.

fev, from what I heard them say, it was just Essendon*. they mentioned that the management company that Essendon* is using had approached thompson and williams - hence these approaches are from Essendon* only.

it'll be voss or ratts, don't worry about that.

Ratts & Voss as co-coaches.
With a part-time/casual 'mentor' available to them as required.

Ratts/Voss to focus on coaching and team spirit building etc.
They can work out themselves how to divide/rotate aspects of the role.

Greg Swann to maintain control of overall direction of the footy dept. including appointments of peripheral staff, players contracts etc.
Except Ratts/Voss able to nominate one assistant each.

We don't need a new bloke to come in and turn the joint over and start again. Especially one without experience of doing that before.

Ratts/Voss to be on staggered two year contracts such that one is up for renewal each year. Either one can be replaced should need arise without major disruption.

I like the sound of that!

Yep, let's continue the experiment of throwing coaches together when they might not like it. We've only put our toe in the water so far by imposing an unwanted reserves coach on the senior coach. Now we can go for broke and have 2 blokes as co-captains despite them both having egos big enough to put their hands up for a senior job. It'll be like Celebrity Death Match.

If only the Libs had realised they could have had Peacock and Howard as co-leaders. I wonder how history would have been rewritten if Hawke and Keating, and Howard and Costello were co-Prime Ministers. The tensions that were suppressed while one was undisputed leader might have raged from the outset then.

Let's face it - there's no way that either of them will accept being co-coaches. Why would Voss believe that Ratts' better connections at Carlton wouldn't be used to undermine his position? Why would Ratts believe that Voss' dominant personality wouldn't lead to him trying to dominate him as well? Why would anyone think that they are so compatible that they could work co-operatively together?

Have there been any other examples in any football code of a successful and equal coaching partnership being created by a club throwing 2 blokes together in this fashion?

1 of the silliest comments I have heard. No one is saying or asking them to do it against their will. If they don't like the idea then it obviously won't happen.

if they were to be open to this kind of idea, I think something like this would be a great outcome for the club.

How about Voss as a 2IC to Ratten with a Sheedy as Mentor to both.

I don't know if Ratts or Voss would be up for this kind of thing, but I still like the principle/idea behind it.

Grant Thomas was spotted walking into Princes Park earlier today.. What could this mean ? I know he's stated previously on radio that he harbours no other desires to coach.. so in what else would he be doing hanging around the CFC ?

He's a football manager by trade so possibly he was chatting to us... or do the storm have offices at PP?

I am sure, dom, that us new supporters and old supporters alike hope that it is all true and as DUC suggested, "Blue skies ahead" to quote a previous DP from the coaching box
