David King ….a voice of reason and REAL concern for the AFL. He is a lone voice out there screaming in the wilderness.
Listen to Nathan Buckley basically demand that Tom Lynch ends up at Collingwood. This is how "free agency" works. Only 3 clubs have a run at him, and guess what? they're all strong clubs. So the point of free agency is for the best players to get to the strongest clubs?
I thought the AFL wanted unpredictability in their games? Ain't gonna happen if the Tom Mitchells, Lance Franklins, Tom Lynch and all other A grade talent somehow end up at strong clubs.
Carlton is left to fight over the scraps of b grade players or c grade players. Will we get Hunt or Buntine etc?
This is what King had to say (what a voice for reason) re Lynch and "free" agency
"If they (the Suns) choose to match the offer and make a stand as a club and say no we want you (Lynch) and he decides to then still leave the priority pick dissolves. They either trade him, allow him to be a free agent or he goes into the draft. Now he’s not getting to the draft. There is no way the Suns can allow that to happen…so I am questioning what the restricted part of it is. Why have the restricted as the clubs can’t fight back. The Gold Coast can’t take the gamble of not getting pick 3 (if he goes into the draft)…so I think the AFL need to look at this. When does the priority pick dissolve?
If he leaves regardless of whether it’s been matched or not they should still get the priority pick because he’s leaving through free agency. Let’s cut to the chase he’s not leaving via trade.
So (that would mean) everyone last on the ladder can pick him up in the first round?
This year it’s Carlton. I think that is the perfect result for the AFL. You get a high quality player go to the poorest team in the competition. That’s what we want isn’t it? Its supposed to be cyclical. The draft is supposed to reward the team that finishes last. It’s Carlton this year. If he was to go to the draft, he goes to Carlton, priority pick goes to Gold Coast. I can’t understand why the priority pick dissolves."
The AFL should change the rules of free agency now. Today, by 3pm today. That way Gold Coast can put their player in the draft and they can still get the compensation pick.
I was listening to him last night when he was saying this. Must say he was annoying me when he kept on saying they would get pick 3 as a PP. Despite this error he made a good point although Dangerfield was a restricted free agent and that worked in Adelaide's favour. I guess a bottom side would be silly to match any offers but not so if you are a top side.
I think the AFL will look at free agency over the off season, especially with GWS players becoming free agents next year.
