It appears this draft is a lot me even and possibly runs a bit deeper in quality. We are not overloaded with talent at the moment, no point in giving one away.

Every year someone suggests we trade Gibbs, I am with you I dont understand it. He is one of our best and still has years of footy ahead of him.

Yeah id probably keep Gibbs to be honest. He's been brilliant this year. Perhaps a new player under BB.

Im not too fussed about early draft picks as from all reports, depth runs to picks 30-40 this year. Would love to trade to get another pick around the 20 - 30 mark to get Kerr.

You might not agree with it, fair enough, but to not understand it is a bit of a glib statement. People have reasoned that getting an extra, high, draft pick is needed for us to get the required talent on the list to peak at the right time for the so-called 'premiership window'. You don't trade your captain but you need to trade quality to get quality back. We are not getting a PP so Gibbs is reasoned to be the only option to achieve another pick at about the middle of the first round (or higher).

Anyway, the trouble this year is that there is depth but not a lot of talent at the high end. The fear for me is that because we are deemed to need heaps of midfielders, we won't ride with the strength of the draft with each successive pick but instead pick for need. This is like cutting corners and reduces our chances of getting the best value out of later selections. Having higher picks negates that to a degree.

Who do we want deep in the draft, the next Aliir Aliir or the next Tom Temay (he was drafted as a potential tagging midfielder, not as a back pocket)? If people say we need to keep looking for quality midfielders, then we'll need higher picks.

We are not going to be challenging for a flag or even playing finals to must likely 2020. Bulldogs, Melbourne, GWS Adelaide, St Kilda are all ahead of us in there rebuild and we wont be catching them for a few years. 2020 Gibbs will be over 30 and yes he may still be playing good footy, he may do a Matt Boyd at the bulldogs and play half back and pro long his career and extra couple of season, and yes if we keep him we may win a couple more games each season till 2020 and be more competitive.
BUT! if we can get a top say 15 pick for him ideally top 10 and try get another gun player who come 2020 will be 22 and about to hit his prime in the midfield then i would take that every day of the week.
We have a significant lack of young midfield talent and maybe trading a player like gibbs away can fast track our re build as we could get another gun mid in. This is what St.Kilda did post those grand final loses and they only spent a couple of seasons on the bottom before they started to improve and because they were playing kids the fans didnt mind seeing them lose because you could see the little sprouts of growth as botls would say.

100% agree.
People need to think about what is best for the club going forward. We still need to be reasonably competitive though in the meantime. If we are to receive a great offer for Gibbs, the club may offload him.

As I've written before, I think we should be open to a trade for Gibbs (&/or Kruezer, Casboult). These are the only three that I believe have any currency and also won't be around when we are contending. (I don't think it is a good look/idea to trade our captain).

BUT:
I doubt we'll get someone as good as Gibbs:
- I actually think the odds are against us drafting someone who turns out to be as good as Gibbs. The aim would be to have a gun who will be around when the whips are cracking in a few years time, for the bulk of their (200+ game) career.

It needs to be a v high pick:
- To increase the chances of finding a real gem, we really need a very high pick (i.e. 10 or earlier, depending on the quality of the kids) or else the value of trading him is outweighed by the value of having him around to help guide and shepherd the young'ns through the development years

Top picks may not be as much of a premium:
- I am sure we have all heard that the top 5 picks this year appear to be very similar quality - therefore the value of pick #1 is not quite the premium as in other years. (Also why I think the value of a good solid win this weekend is worth the risk of sliding 1 place on draft day...)

True, but whilst we blood new players we also need some experience to surround them.

Look at St Kilda. They could have traded Nick Riewoldt years ago using the same excuse "We aren't challenging for a flag anytime soon". But he has played a big big part in the revamp of that club and the younger players coming through.

I'd be keeping Gibbs and Murphy.

Riewoldt >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gibbs

Gibbs has had an extended RDO since the Geelong game

I want him to stay but it's incredibly easy to see why a trade to our advantage is seen as a option

Still is 'perceived' as someone who picks and chooses

Im not comparing them as players - purely just saying that whilst it's great too blood young kids (ala Cunningham, SOS etc etc) we also need experience to help them out.

Since the Geelong game you mention both Cripps and Gibbs have averaged 26 possessions per game and have kicked 7 goals. Cripps' finish to the season has fans salivating at what a god he is and how he should win the b&f and be an All Australian. Meanwhile Gibbs has apparently been on an extended RDO? This perception that he still picks and chooses is blatantly wrong in my opinion.

Agree. He has had a fantastic year. For a side that is calling out for players with class, why would you trade away one of your only players that provides it?

By me for one.

He can average 26 possessions if he likes but his easy possessions are not what makes him a good player.
Look at him last weekend and against Geelong where he was hard at the ball and the man and ran all day.

Two completely different approaches to the game. He's a wonderful player on his day and a good player on an off day.

Look at the difference in attitude between him and Simpson. Now there's a player who chooses to go every week.

IIR, Robbo thought Gibb might have been more consistent as well.
