Sigried,

To answer your question, Hawthorn have done nothing in approaching Thornton and offering him a contact. No dramas there.

The reason why so many of us are pissed off at Hawthorn is they demand over the odds for whatever wash-up hack they want to offload (Hay; Spider) but have no intention of paying a fair price for Thornton.

Lets face it, Thornton doesn't want to be at the club. Everybody realises that now. So it stands to reason that the minute the Hawks put a fair deal on the table for him, we will jump at it and be glad to see the back of him.

Instead, we walked away from the trade table after 30 seconds after receiving an offer which Miller has been quoted as saying was laughable.

Why am I so pissed off at Hawthorn? cause they're cheap. And I f@#king hate cheap people.

Spot on ... at least they got some of their own back when Swannies laughed off their demands for Spider ....... and then we told them to chew on our furry lefty to boot.

I hope they get nothing they want, we keep T-Bird at a reduced price and make him earn his pennance, and then whoever the Dawks get at pick 6 turns out to be a head case.

Probably a bit of both. Although he has no angst with the playing or coaching group, he probably feels a bit 'unloved' at the moment. He may have communicated this to his manager who's decided that enough is enough, and he will pull his client from Carlton.

However I think Denis and Co are putting up the 'No Trade' fence because they believe they can win him back before the PSD, ala Campo last year.

They may have realised their stuff up with leaving him in the dark and will try and allow time to mend the wounds.

For all we know, Bret may come back from his holiday accepting of the poor situation the board and football department is in, realise that the board is in a big pile of poo and re-sign, forget about the whole saga and hit 2007 with a full head of steam.

We can only hope! :-D

Hawthorn is understood to be prepared to offer its second-round pick — No. 24 — to the Blues to open negotiations on Thornton. He will become the second player in two years to be lost to the Blues for nothing if he enters the pre-season draft. Scott Camporeale walked to Essendon* last year.

The Dons are also interested in Thornton and have suggested using their second-round pick, No. 20, to thwart the Hawks if Carlton relents. But for this to work, Thornton would have to agree, which his manager, Anthony McConville, has said will not happen.

Problem is if we don't deal with another club at some point this week and we can't get a deal with Thornton before the PSD, then we would surely have to draft him back. He knows the team structure and how the other team members play around him. Not to mention the amount of work the club has put into to him and his best footy is probably between now and the next 4-5 years.

But here's the question.

Will the fan's ever forgive him if we have to draft him back and miss using our No.1 PDS pick on a player we really want or need.

If that happens, I know I'll hate him as long as his arse points to the earth.

So I think we should wait for the best offer and piss him off. We already know the worst we'll get is pick 20 from Essendon*. In this draft, that may not be too bad with 4 picks in the top 20. We are building for the future afterall.

Just a thought .....

If he doesn't get traded we have around 2 months before the PSD to sign him up. Lappin was out of contract after last year's trade period & a chance to go in the PSD but eventually agreed to terms.

Spot on.

I reckon we'll end up with pick six. Hawthorn, if they want him, have no power in this arrangement. The cards are stacked for us.

I agree with the clubs stance at the moment, if thornton really wants to leave and Hathorn reallly want him then let then pay what we want. As I see it there is a few scenarios to occur:
a) Hawks gives us pick 6 and thornton becomes a hawk.

b) Another club offers a pick better than the hawks pick 24, Carlton evaluates it and either accepts with thornton agreeing to the trade.

c)Carlton not happy with any offer and tells everybody that thornton will be playing with carlton next year.

This last option will have a few effects either Thronton agrees to a new contract and stays which then puts the issue to bed. Alternatively Bret refuses new contract and is adament of entering the PSD in which case we make it very clear that we will be picking him up. And then the ball is back is Thornton & Hawks court, because he will then have to nominate a price on his head, which will need massive consideration, because he will need to nominate a price/contract which will scare off every other club except Hawthorn (Say 450k a season for 2 years). This will not be easy because then Bret will become one of the highest earners at the hawks and everybody will know what his contract is, how will the other hawthorn players feel about this and what the their fans they would expect value for money fro him, Bret will come under lots of pressure in this regard and we should be applying all of it ourselves.

Call this approach what you will, personally I am sick of being trampled on from everybody in the media, AFL admin, opposition teams and fans. We need to get some balls back and to let everybody out there now that we won't be shafted anymore. Wishful thinking but i'm hoping!
