Losing Bradley really threw us in 94 & 2000. Simply because he was never injured & it was total uncharted waters for us.

So glad we got some belated revenge on the Dees last year

1988 too. According to my scorecard, we still owe the Dees a couple more.

Be mindful we were 10-4 with a percentage of 114.5 in 2022 and missed the 8

GWS loss today puts Blues 2 games inside the top 4 for the first time since Rounds 13 - 22, 2000

the evenness of contributions from all 23 players each week and depth accumulating in our VFL regulars is like nothing i’ve seen in decades. that gives me more confidence than anything else. Voss and coaches have been correct to emphasis the role mentality required for consistent footy. less legends, more wins and moving closer to that elusive aura of invincibility.

would love a download of your stats database @GoPP!

Well Diesel, I have spreadsheeted every game but this time just used AFL Tables and happy to spend 20 minutes digging up the numbers.

Next Target: finish inside Top 2 by 2 game margin.

Here's the history....

Top 2 finishes: 36
Top 2 by a 2 game margin: 20 times

...resulting in 15 x Grand Finals and 11 Flags!

The only Premiership years Carlton didn't finish inside the top 2 by 2 games were...
'38, '45, '68, '81, '82

Once again History beckons...

...and we still need one of those 10 game winning streaks that most of our Premiership teams have enjoyed.

The road ahead to pull that off...
Richmond
GWS
Footscray
North
Port
Collingwood (wouldn't ya know it!)

Results continue to go our way. The filth / scum double tonight gives us the opportunity to go 6 points clear in second position tomorrow

Just realised something from that stat I posted above...

Carlton finishing top two at end of home and away 36 times.

The last time in 2000 meant we had done this in 34% of 104 seasons.

The utterly shite period since has butchered this noble statistic - now down to 28%

Current odds to make top 4:
Brisbane $2.37
Fremantle $2.50
Collingwood $2.60

If Brisbane and Freo come 3rd & 4th that would be a great outcome.

36x top 2→
20x top 2 x2 games →
15 GF →
11 Premiership flags!!
… that’s pretty nice reward for top two finishes and statistical encouragement for a world weary Blue Bagger who still is reluctant to watch an entire game live. let alone attend in person. and freo just showed Sydney are beatable — even on the SCG!

(i tried a couple of VFL games last year as i happened to be jogging around Princess Park by accident and they played well as i listens on radio but as soon as i went inside the ground we stopped scoring and fell behind for the entire third quarter both times and as soon as i left they resumed and kicked to a win).

I'm surprised that as many as 5 of our 16 flags were won from outside the top 2, especially considering all but one of them were in a final 4 or 5 system. Under the top 5 it was extremely hard to win from 4th or 5th, can't recall whether anyone actually achieved it. Guessing we must have won most of all of those from 3rd but can't find the stats...

I guess my stat was a little bit mischievous GreatEx!

It was Top Two by a TWO GAME margin.

So, to clarify...

1938: finished 1st but only 4 pts ahead of 3rd
1945: finished 4th
1968: finished 2nd but on same points as 3rd and only 2 pts ahead of 4th
1981: finished 1st but only 4 points ahead of 3rd and 4th
1982: finished 3rd

Hope that makes sense.
It all started from desperately wanting a buffer this year...

So I guess to your point about top two finishes and flags - we've had 14 of them from top 2
