AFL.com.au has 4 Swans in their top 25 (Heeney, Gulden, Warner, Curnow), surely they must be premiership favourites in some eyes.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/1469191/the-25-the-afls-best-players-ranked-by-our-experts

I don't bet, but it is interesting to see where the odds rank us.

Betting has them at 3rd, behind the Lions and the Suns.
We're at 12/13 with Port on $41.

It should be a good game to see where we sit.
Carlton win $3.30
Sydney win $1.36 and $2.90 for a win by 40+ points.

Last year in round 10 we only lost by 16pts at SCG.

Dumb list as always. Curnow is catapulted from nowhere near it in 2025 to top-25 in 2026 based on a solid pre-season, yet Jeremy Cameron sits at #3 despite breaking his arm in the GF and struggling with other injuries through the summer. Sure, sure. Will make it more fun when we stuff them both.

Of course, now that Curnow is no longer at Carlton. He is no longer a selfish, lazy footballer all of a sudden.

Why, because he will magically be pulled in line by a strong Sydney.

Yep one that finished near us on the ladder last year. One player will magically catapult them into premiership favourites. Ummmmm We had two coleman medalists, a two time brownlow medalist and a rising star, and several 1st round picks and that got us no where.

Charlie is showing a lot of enthusiasm right now obviously as he wants to be a Rock star. Lets see when he is found out and the coach cracks it with him.

What a clown !! Please footy gods, let us crush that plastic team.

Everyone's suddenly a superstar when they leave Carlton.
Wonder how long the honeymoon period will last for Charles before he gets the shits.

Everyone's asking, "Carlton will really struggle, how will they fill the massive hole left by a Coleman medallist?!"

Hey idiots, we still have a Coleman medallist, and which other club needed two Coleman medallists to be successful?

It is such a shame that we couldn't get Curnow and McKay working together effectively (I also blame the ball carriers). We're not the first and won't be the last to fail to capitalise on a premium setup on paper!

I feel like our progress (and Voss's future) can be measured in relation to the Saints and the Swans (as distinct from in 1995):
1. If we finish above both the Saints and Swans, we will be well placed, most likely in the top 8 and Voss will get renewed.
2. If we finish below both of them, we are worse than we thought and have probably missed even the wildcard round!
3. If we finish in between the Saints and Swans, it will be a judgment call and probably dependent on more nuanced things.

A win this Thursday would be an excellent start...

B: Harry Dean, Jacob Weitering, Adam Saad
HB: Zac Williams, Lewis Young, Ollie Florent
C: Ollie Hollands, George Hewett, Jagga Smith
HF: Ben Ainsworth, Harry McKay, Elijah Hollands
F: Lachie Fogarty, Brodie Kemp, Will Hayward
Foll: Marc Pittonet, Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh
I/C: Mitch McGovern, Liam Reidy, Campbell Chesser, Cooper Lord, Francis Evans

Derksen may be preferenced over Dean given the ground.

CARLTON has confirmed two debutants for Thursday night's Opening Round game against Sydney, with Jagga Smith and Harry Dean locked in to play their first AFL games.

From AFL website.

OUT: 8 injured

Backs...Haynes, Newman, Cowan, O'Farrell
Wing...Carroll, Cottrell
Mid...Cerra
Fwd...Motlop

B: Saad Weitering Derksen
HB: Williams Young Florent
C: O.Hollands Cripps E. Hollands
HF: Hayward Kemp Smith
F: Evans McKay Ainsworth

FOLL: Pittonet Hewett Walsh

INT: Boyd Chesser Lord Reidy Byrne

EM: O'Keefe (Reidy) Moir (Byrne) Dean (Derksen)

Emergencies an equal chance to be selected by MC.

Feel if Grundy gets on top of Pittonet, Reidy'd aggression may be needed.
Have to nullify Grundy feeding Hewett Warner and Gulden.

Charlie Amartey and McDonald will be their big 3 KPFs. Doubt McLean will pplay.
Young is the tallest option for roaming McDonald.

Having seen Haynes in Sydney yesterday for media launch, he may be the surprise selection for Young or Derksen.

I look forward to the return of our missing backmen, and hope to see Derksen in the forwardline as the third athletic marking option.

I am confident we can win this. Hayward, Florent and Hewett to blitz against their former team.

Expecting our smalls to do a lot of damage. All know where the goals are.

Look forward to catching up pregame for a session with sinbagger, Great Ex and Sydney Blue.

Go Blues

Good!

Sydney have some awesome top end players. As do we… when we’re fit.
Heeney, Gulden, Warner, Blakey, Grundy. I’ll also throw in Papley and, grudgingly, Curnow. I think their backline is not amazing.

Our very top end ain’t too shabby… although not very deep with Cripps, Walsh, Weitering right up there. I’d throw in Harry who will ant the very least keep them occupied, and I’d place Hayward alongside Papley.

The big questions will be whether we have lifted our bottom end sufficiently and have we bedded down enough of an improved game plan to match it with good teams.

We need someone to quell Heeney, esp when he breaks forward. Is it too much to ask of Zac Williams? His hamstrings might not be able to take it. Or maybe Boyd.
We need to limit the damage done by Gulden’s kicking, and we need to put roadblocks on Warner and knock him off balance so he can’t burst out of stoppages. Ollie might have to run with Gulden or possibly we set a task for Chesser but I have no idea if he’s up to that. And maybe the good Lord lines up on Warner.
And, if Pittonet can break even with Grundy, it will go a long way.
I don’t mind either of Hayward or Ainsworth keeping Blakey honest. He wouldn’t want to take off and leave either of them loose…

As for Charlie, the key is to not panic - he gets a lot of frees because the defender has a panic attack as the ball is coming in. Just keep punching the ball away and watch him get frustrated.

Well there you go. Well done son.

Deano has been sanctioned to play.

He looked good to me too.
Just thought Derksen had more senior experience....and looked great the few times Ive watched him play. Albeit limited.

Yes I would have preferred Derksen for the time being and would have liked Dean to put together some impressive peformances in the VFL before being considered for senior selection. Happy for Dean however I don't think we should be rushing him.

I'd think that Derksen will come in if Weitering doesn't pass his fitness test. He may also replace McGovern

I would have selected-

B: Harry Dean, Jacob Weitering, Adam Saad
HB: Zac Williams, Lewis Young, Ollie Florent
C: Ollie Hollands, George Hewett, Campbell Chesser
HF: Jagga Smith, Harry McKay, Elijah Hollands
F: Ben Ainsworth, Brodie Kemp, Will Hayward
Foll: Marc Pittonet, Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh
I/C: Wade Derksen, Liam Reidy, Talor Byrne, Cooper Lord, Francis Evans

Dean, Smith, Derksen and Byrne in for their debuts. Reward pre-season form.
I understand Byrne is first year but he hasn't been overawed and he offers something we don't have. Something we're desperate for. Forget conservative. Let's start new from Round 0.

I have a feeling that Derkson and Byrne won't play. Otherwise, their inclusion would have been announced with Jagga and Dean.

So I think the team will be:

B: Saad, Weitering, Dean
HB: Florent, L Young, Williams
C: O Hollands, Cripps, E Hollands
HF: Hayward, Kemp, Smith
F: Fogarty, McKay, Ainsworth
Foll: Pittonet, Hewitt, Walsh
Int: McGovern, Chesser, Lord, Reidy, Evans
Emerg: Derkson, Moir, Boyd
