As it stands, Harry McKay will fly out with @CarltonFC tomorrow and is expected to be named & play against the @WestCoastEagles on Saturday.

Excellent news all round after three weeks out of the senior team due to personal reasons.

He saw new Zac Dawson play last week and thought he's probably good to come back with a lazy 6

Then he got injured. But he showed, he's got what we need.

Good call Mick.

But the kid just needs to get a decent run at it and not go missing so much during games.
The tackling is great but we need one of the little forwards to starting kicking sausage rolls.
Maybe he can spend some time in the midfield if and when he develops the tank.
Has more offensive potential than Fog - but so does the Ikon Park mower.

Reports that Tim Kelly has been dropped.

Not quite Brad Moran levels but Clay Hall should see increased midfield minutes Saturday.

I agree. I'd make him earn it with a bit more than Saturdays effort.
Hopefully Will White keeps his spot. The conditions on Saturday will suit him much more than last week.
Great to see Carroll get a gig. His kicking will be a huge weapon for our offensive ball movement.

Does anyone think it would cause problematic angst for the club, or team cohesion if Gov, Motlop and Fogarty are demoted this week?

Does it really impede us from winning our first game of the year? That's 4 outs with injured Cowan.

We've got McKay, Carroll and probably Cottrell coming in. They're 2 bonafide replacements. Wouldn't mind it being Durdin, making it 4.

I'd prefer Durdin in over Cottrell and I'd prefer we keep Fog in unless Elijah is good to go.

Ideally the forward line would look like this.

Williams Curnow Elijah
Motlop McKay Durdin

Kemp on the bench.

That’s how you make a statement. IMO overdue, but it only took the new coach 4 weeks to do it.

I know they've been getting pumped but pretty underwhelming stats from kelly. Might have been better having him in the side then some up and comer full of beans

Good call. A lot of similarities.

One came from the VFA (keogh would love that) and the other came from SANFL (keogh would love that), but was drafted (keogh wouldn't like that).

One played in a golden era for Carlton surrounded by great players, the other is playing for a team that still is trying to make Top 4,with flakey players around him.
Both played midfield roles, but when playing small forward, Fraser hovered around goals enabling him to use his speed and skills to hit the board consistently with 1 or 2 goals a game, whereas Durdin as a small forward has been asked to fill spaces in the backline, then expected to run back forward faster than the ball would move when we won it. No wonder his stats show low disposal from Durds. Hot headed Carlton fans blame Durds, but all Durds is doing is following instruction. Not his doing.

Start with the negatives.

They both suffered from injuries and miss lots of footy.
Fraser with his hammies, and Durds with his shoulder(s). Shits me, but out of our control.

Fraser did rotate with Mark Naley, Paul Meldrum, Adrian Gleeson as a midfield/ small forward, but also with Johnston when he went forward. Back then the Dominator played a lot on the ball. I miss those days. Durdin, however, isn't running up into the backline as a midfielder, like Fraser did, because the midfield is hogged amongst Cripps Hewett Cerra Walsh, with a bit of Motlop and Williams. Durds goes to the backline to add to the Vossy flood and fill gaps playing as a .....small forward  . What a waste of talent. :yikes:

Similarities:

Solid build for a small forward
Quick off the mark and first 10-20 metres, close down space and catch their targets.
Strong tacklers.
Know where the goals are and are good at creating goals for others ie unselfish (see Motlop for definition)

Moral to the story.

Like Fraser, Durdin should be played closer to goals where he is most dangerous as a small forward. He's solid, and super quic, and can unleash high level of forward pressure with repeat efforts. He's our most dangerous small forward close to goals. Has a knack of squeezing under a tackle to break free...Betts like, wheras Motlop thinks he's a tractor, and tries to break through tackles unsuccessfully.

It is disappointing.

We're still trying to get the right mix forward and midfield, and getting some run from the backline.

Carroll provides a much needed ingredient if we are to increase speed from the backline, but he's just replacing Cowan. That is not like for like imo. Cowan's role is purely lock down these days. With Doc as sub, its obvious Vossy will not relieve the light Holland from a defensive role. We used pick 11 on him to fill the wing role. He looked great there. What's happened to playing to our strengths? Hollands will still be helping out defenders from a wing. Free him up FFS.

I would have liked to add another small like Boyd to the backline, to add run, insteadthe MC have maintained the 2 similar sized players in Haynes and Gov, where Haynes looks after taller players because Gov does struggle against taller opponents, but small opponents have given Gov the run around; he's not accountable to be a defender. The only obvious reason Gov is kept in the team is because of his 2 good foot passes inside 50 in the first half last week? That's all he did. 2 tackles in a forwadline where the ball lived for most of the 2nd half ... when Gov went missing. The ball was in his vicinity 80%. What about putting an end to the 17 turnovers from his last 4 games?

Cannot believe we are dropping a mid, and using Doc as a sub, ahead of Motlop and Fogarty. None are long term prospects for Carlton, and Doc has been more benefit to the team than those 2. Who is the MC going to rotate through the middle? Motlop, Williams? They have done nothing in the midfield, so why are they the taking Lord's spot in there; a player who has done well and running ahead for the overlap, a player who is winning the ball in the middle. At least Doc could give us more benefit in the midfield than Motlop Fog and Williams.

Lord is needed in the midfield rotations moreso than Motlop, Fogarty and Williams. The decision to drop Lord, a genuine mid, is weak as piss. I've had enough of carrying a losing mentality to help them find form. If you're out of form you should be in the reserves.

So glad to see Durdin come in. A genuine quick small forward and terrier. Why do we need FIVE small forwards Fogarty, Motlop, Williams, White and Durdin when we have 3 talls McKay, Curnow and Kemp? It doesnt make sense. That is NOT the right way to solve the Small forward iissue. Its really embarrassisng. So we will have 2-3 sitting on the bench, hoping that between the 5 of them we kick 3 goals from the small forwards? That's not a good return imo.

We need to have more genuine midfielders to rotate through the midfield.

Lets hope Acres improves his kicking from 50%. Lets hope Gov stops turning the ball over and closing down his opponent. Lets hope Fogarty and Motlop kick a goal. Lets hope we free up Saady to run the ball out instead of locking onto an opponent and leave Gov's kicking to break lines. I'm shitty these 4 players are playing against the bottom team. Picking flat track bullies to find form is not my cup of tea.

Expecting 32 degrees and sunny on Saturday.

Sounds like a good day for marking.

5 small forwards and 3 tall forwards selected = 8 players to fit into 6 spots.

I'm guessing a player coming back from injury after one game in the reserves will be rotating in the midfield. Most likely our best small forward Durdin.

Cottrell has done little to warrant an automatic recall
