I found it particularly pleasing that we got goals from unlinlely sources:

Kemp, Cincotta, McGovern.

To a lesser extent Acres and TDK.

I expect forwards and mids to kick goals. I don't really expect defenders and rucks to.

Haven't seen the game yet due to family commitments but going on the comments and stats and the highlights package on afl.com.au it looks like this is a massive win for us. I am not a great one for evaluating people on fantasy points but as a rule of thumb I think if you rack up 50 or more you should be safe from being dropped unless there is some massive downside not adequately reflected in those calculations like maybe some massive clangers. If you are under 50 then you get looked at, but often your role will explain why the figures are down - eg run-with role (Cincotta 51 points), lockdown defender (Weitering 47 - season average [SA] under 69), starvation corner small forward (Fantasia 38 SA under 32, Owies 47 SA under 48, Fogarty 47) , low time on ground, unrewarded endurance running etc etc. On the line in the sand of sub-50 points our players under the microscope from this week would be Weitering (no way), Fogarty (ditto), Owies (at risk if and when others are ready to come back but probably Fantasia would go first), McGovern (doubt it unless we desperately needed to go taller down back, even then I suspect others would go first), Fantasia (under real pressure) Cowan (like his toughness though and improving), Kennedy (38 points, SA over 71 says he's doing his job generally and puts him in our top 10 for SA, but I reckon one of him or Hewett might have to go to improve leg speed through the middle and Hewett has an even better SA of over 78) and Carroll who was of course the sub and had little TOG but probably is first on the chopping block despite not being given much chance.

This started as a post to note the inadequacy of fantasy points as a measure rather than a post to discuss who might go out if someone pushes themselves into the team next week, but on that I suspect Carroll and Fantasia would be the 2 most at risk?

Yeah, I think Fantasia will eventually make way for Motlop, assuming the latter finds form in the VFL. Maybe Jesse will get a sub run-out before the bye?

I think when Cerra returns, it'll make sense for Kennedy and Hewett to get the occasional sub role. They're both too good, and in MK's case too versatile, to leave out regularly.

Interesting to see what happens with Martin now that Zac has revitalised the forward line. Not saying Zac is filling the Martin role, more a question of how important the Martin role is at this time. Another way of looking at it is that Zac has made Owies redundant (perhaps no surprise the latter has been quiet since the switch). But Owies is still contributing around the ground.

I did wonder whether Williams- Martin- Motlop could be the Three Amigos mk.II, but I don't want to get carried away, they're more likely to be the...uh... Three Ambulancigos... or something.

As long as they don't become the Three Inflated Egos - though there have been some very successful teams that featured such characters.

Fantasia seems to be doing Cottrell's role now. So he might be ok until Cotts is back.
Returning from injury
Cerra - Carroll
Motlop - Owies
Cottrell - Fantasia
Martin - unclear. E Hollands in his role doing ok.
Pittonet - obviously a decision on two rucks but maybe have a runner as sub and go with one ruck for the last quarter

Jesus, how did I forget about Cotters?

I agree, I wouldn't be dumping E.Hollands to make way for Martin, as highly as I rate Jack. But Hollands can play through the mid too so there's room for both.

O.Hollands is still a question mark for me, but Martin obviously isn't his like-for-like replacement.

Saad Weiters Boyd
Kemp Gov Newman
Cotters Cripps Acres
Martin McKay Fogarty
Motlop Curnow Williams
TDK Walsh Cerra
-
Hewett E.Hollands Cowan/Marchbank Owies/O.Hollands
-
Kennedy

Maybe??

the way he positions ahead of the kick is underestimated by some. people were saying he slows us down and talking smack about the fog last season. he manages to get feront and centre of so many contests and if he doesn’t dish it off to a player who won’t be tackled immediately he takes the tackle and wins us a ball up.

i think The Fog alone has stopped 50% of the fast defensive rebound goals accorded effortlessly. oppo teams against blues we saw while he was out of the team. and he frees up our more stylish ball users to get in better positions to score should outlet all
come to them.

last goal (received HB from Wal$h) in the fourth quater was brilliant foresight and positioning on his part. burnt his young, star opponent twice in 1 minutes. players like Fog being around the contest allow for that.

i was thinking the exact same thing even just a minute or two in. the by end Hinkley still hadn’t shows away from reality the way those Scott brothers do in their “eloquent” and “insightful” way.

those two do it all the time, they try to be magnanimous then sneak in their weasel clauses because their egos are bigger than the venue they play in. (they’re both amazing coaches though, i must reluctantly admit).

Amazing Win!! Imagine if the midfield and every single player got involved.

We have so much improvement left. Get Motlop, Cottrell, Martin in. Get Fantasia, Carrol and maybe Owies or Cowan out. Apologies to Cowan but he has plenty of time.

Geez Fogarty makes a difference. Not a superstar, but is at the right places and throws himself on the ball.

And leave Williams forward. Love him there.

PS Carlton . Smash those mofos next week - thats all i ask…….

I actually thought Cowan was a tone-setter tonight, body lining the ball and keeping it going our way

Cowan was a bit of a ball magnet early on and our defensive glue. he needs to be a bit cleaner in close though. too many juggles and fumbles. he’s a player though and Voss underlined it in the pressers of late. “ready to go” Voss said.

he lacks the wiz bang athleticism and skill of a Crippa/Walsh/Cerra/Martin so he’s had to become a very smart player. underrated by too many. tough too.

i loved some of the intelligent tap-ons by running players who couldn’t take possession or didn’t want to take possession with two oncoming opponents.

other afl teams do that a lot more than us. we’re learning.
