The Blues have selected the former Collingwood big man, who has spent 2014 in the VFL, dropping Robert Warnock after he was convincingly beaten by Sydney Swans opponent Mike Pyke in round 17.

It is not Wood personally. Wood has been a very bad choice. You only pick these players if you think you might have a chance for a flag. I picked blues to finish bottom four this year before the season started which is why I said it was a bad choice at the time we drafted him. At a time when we have no young talent we should not be picking anyone over the age of 22.

We should only be picking players who could play 10 years for us. Instead of giving a young developing ruckmen a go now we have Wood. Our development for the next senior ruckmen has lost a year.

The issue about Wood is that it indicates how poor Warnock is that we would be considering Wood. We gave up 2 picks for Warnock, one of them a second rounder in a very strong draft , we have paid a big salary to, he has managed about 60 games in 6 seasons and takes about one contested mark every 3 months and he is likely to be replaced by a ruckman who is at his third club and was back in the VFL last year. It says a lot about Warnock. He had the big chance this year as first ruck. All he does is hit the ball to contests. Another poor recruiting decision, and Sammy J is close to the best ruck in the AFL.

For example in the rookie draft I wanted ex GWS player Miles. 21 year old ball magnet and will be a 10 year player at Richmond. Since he has got his opportunity at Richmond he has averaged just under 30 possessions a game. These are the sort of players we should focus on in the rookie draft or players who have a bit of X-Factor.
