We keep getting the wrong personnel from Collingwood

I want their recruiting manager (Derek Hine) who in my opinion was one of the main reasons behind their 2010 premiership. He sure got a lot of draft picks right in a very short amount of time.

As long as he gets our guys looking like footballers and not cricketers, I don't give a stuff where he's from.

I'm pretty sure Malthouse gave instructions to the recruiters at Collingwood about the type of players he wanted: big game performers was his no.1 criteria.
That is why they went for Thomas & Sidebottom ahead of some others who were rated more highly.

So, I think with Malthouse + Rogers we have improved our recruiting dept immeasurably. Tick.
Next cab off the rank: Assistant coaches - we need people with great ideas, plans and effective communicators.

re Buttifant, he is an excellent appointment but I think all of the top tier of guys will do a similarly good job (incl Cordy). The bigger challenge sits with the players and, specifically, their attitudes.
We all know you can 'run a 5km time trial' and then you can 'RUN a 5km time trial'. One group of players will do what they are told and tick the box. The others will be pushing themselves to break the box! And this is reflected on the field.
It is not about speed/endurance/strength. It is about pushing yourself to win, to beat others and to beat yourself.

And re Synners queries about why he would leave Coll if he was any good, I'm pretty sure he is coming b/c he is close with Mick and likes working with him.

Butter's galvanizing? Got to give that a go.

Not much talked about but players want to be in a professional, yet fun environment. Like kids.

How many big mids has Hine picked since he selected Beams and Pendlebury?

Ball fell into their lap.

Hine wouldn't have addressed our needs for strong mids. Most of his picks have been one paced midgets like Sidebottom, Sinclair, Josh Thomas, Rounds, Krakouer, Elliott and Blair. Plus outside players like Marley Williams, Seedsman, Fasolo, Kennedy and Broomhead who have some speed, but aren't beasts. This appears to be one reason why they've fallen off the pace since they won the flag.

Freo, Sydney, Geelong and Hawthorn have cracked the code. Big mids and flankers with grunt and footy smarts. Port and North have recruited similar players.

Thomas would be a good free kick if we don't have to trade, but we probably need him more for his ability to run hard both ways. Isn't the in and under mid we need.

..i think it's less about the physical type you recruit [though it certainly has merit], and more about the mental character of the type you recruit.. ..it's why [as well with injuries], some teams can yo-yo up and down the ladder with seemingly little change to lists/development....it's why bonafide leaders on field are so important, and why the really top teams have a handful of players that could be genuine captains.. ..there's not as big a gap between top and mediocre teams, and again from middle to bottom teams as some think, in regards to pure physical types.. ..it's the more intangible elements that truely separates the clubs from one another..

Won't make a huge difference to our softie list. Every fitness guys are the same, there aren't any secret formula, unless you want to go down to the Stephen Dank path.

I'd be interested to hear from those in the know what changes Buttifant makes to fitness, training and nutritional regimen at the club. Could be the most important appointment for us in 2014 ... for better or for worse.
