I just watched the interview on 360. A lot of um's and ah's and a s'pose so some of Ratts has rubbed off on him

They put up a graphic

142 games
115 goals

Would love him to get back to 2009 or 2010, which ever year he kicked over 30 goals.

Should be getting a goal a game from Murphy, Judd and Simpson/Carrazzo between them. 7-8 goals a week from the midfield.

He's taken a self portrait in the suit. It will be included in the main picture once his contract details have been finalised.

Cannot believe the people bagging Murph about being soft.... he is the total package when it comes to footy. Does it all. Carlton's best player and you could mount a good case for him being the best player in the competition!

I never thought it was in doubt. I laughed when Ox claimed it will definitely not be him.

He was groomed for it, he is at the perfect age and maturity to do it for a 5-6 year stint like Juddy and his media skills (who others are also bagging) are not actually that bad and on the grand scheme of things not as important as the leadership and professionalism he will display amongst the team.

Perfect and most sensible choice, will have amazing support from Kade, Carrots and of course Juddy.

The way things are going under Mick, Murph as captain, the low injury list, it will be our year this year!

Murph for Brownlow, Carlton for Premiers!

..callin' Murphy soft is a whole load of crazy talk.. ..now, he may play too politely yes, i'll give you that.. ..he's always played the ball, never the man,, and sometimes he could have used a little more mongrel.. ..but the kid has gone in for the hard ball since his very beginning, and has been getting crunched in tackles and pack situations ever since.. ..and he's done it with bugger all protection.. ..there was a period when he was exaggerating some of the hits/tackles he copped, but that was after years of getting crunched for no free's.. ..he's been under the media radar, but he's up there with selwood for recieving head-high free's.. ..and it's because he's getting crunched.. ..he ain't soft..

Well Done.

We should probably acknowledge a couple of other things too!

1. John Murphy had issues with Fitzroy on departure and has held a grudge ever since.
2. Zoning. John's father, Leo, had won two best and fairests with Hawthorn in the 1930s so they wanted him under the father/son rule but he was zoned to Fitzroy.

..regarding the Murphy's being the anti-F/S's, i remember reading in an article that John Murphy could have actually played for the Hawks under F/S, even back then.. ..but apparently his mates were royboys and he decided to play with them.. ..so i guess he said no to hawks and agreed to go via the zone..?..

Not a truer word spoken. His Dad has told him as much. 'Don't worry about anything else - just make sure you've averaged 1.5 goals a game when your career is over.'

..gibbs and mclean will chime in more regularly than judd and simmo, murphy we know can be very attacking.. ..a lot will depend on how much we can lock the ball deep in our attacking area..

Thanks.

Would love to see that kind of output again from Murph.

This appointment is a bit significant for me because for many years I maintained that 2013 is when our window truly opens.

I believed that 2005 was the beginning. We were forced to start fresh and completely rebuild or list. So now, here we are 8 years later and all those young kids we picked back in 2005 - 2008 are starting to hit their straps and reach their peak. I always believed that we would not have a shot at true success until the likes of murph and co made up our nucleus and were experienced leaders.

So here we are, and our time is now.

I think the move was a year or 2 late. Murph will have to grow into the role. He needs to become more vocal for mine. Also I am not sure he is the sort of guy to let a teammate know that their actions on or off field are unacceptable in a forceful way. Yet. He needs to develop that side of himself along with Carrots and Simpson.

Not impressed. Murphy seriously needs to improve his media skills. He is our representative on camera, and i always fibd him stilted and unconfident. He has more than enough time to develop this.

If he can lead on field and the sponsors like him does anything else matter?

naive to think media skills arent vitally important these days in selling the club - Murph needs to improve in that area and i'm sure he will

He's not that bad, is he?

He will improve as you say, so I'm not sure what the drama is on that front.

I'm sure that if Murph can't handle the press stuff, we could always have Robbo as our nominated press spokesman.

Don't worry about those mids alone, as McLean will likely kick more goals than any of them.

The elephant in the room that is yet to be discussed is what affect with the captaincy will have on Murphy's high marking skills?

All good, apart from the fact that Murphy is the softest captain we have had in a long time.....should be much easier to retain his services now.

Why is he the softest captain we have had in a long time ?
