Apparently Richmond send out a letter to members that if they do not inform the club by a certain date, they will automatically have their membership renewed.
Opt out rather than opt in is probably not a bad way to go in keeping the numbers up.

Theyre already doing that. My membership was automatically renewed.
Which makes the current membership figure even more disappointing IMO.

It's just Carlton Direct ie direct debit that's autorenewed, I had thought.

It's opt in automatic renewal, not opt out

I find logging into to online shop & getting the discount a hassle, I dont think Ive once got the discount & have about 5 different logins & passwords that dont work.

With other sporting clubs I just put my member number in & the discount comes off at the checkout.

Probably pretty petty compared to many other issues raised but still, Its annoying.

Hello,

The members discount is not redeemable online, it can only be used in store when a membership card is presented.

Unfortunately due to the different types of discount available we cannot put a system in place on the website where the members discount can be used.

Kind regards.

CARLTON SHOP

Got that email today, Maybe its just me but I think thats weak. Even just free post for regional/interstate members ... Give us something since its listed as a benefit of membership.

Anyway, paid their full price again.

actually its a disgrace

do you want to spread your brand?

do you want to reward long distance/interstate members? not all your fans/members live in melbourne.

this should be a high priority and merchandise discounts/free postage should be a key part of an interstate/long distance membership

this is all basic stuff and another example of a failed membership dept.

It's opt in automatic renewal, not opt out

How is it "opt in"?
I received correspondence telling me my membership would be renewed by a certain date if I didnt tell them otherwise.
Wouldnt that be "opt out"? :?

Yep, got to agree here.

I live and work in Melbourne and I find it extremely hard and time consuming (ie not worth it) to get down to the Carlton shop.

Don't think this is just an interstate/country vic issue.

Seriously, if you're afraid of losing 5% of revenue then just up it 5%...it's already outrageously expensive as it is so nobody would be any the wiser

Sorry, I wasn't aware we were doing that.
I knew of the system where you could opt in to have it automatically renewed.

So has this letter been sent to all members who have yet to re-sign?

just had the $200 raffle call - exclusive to members only to pay off the redevelopment of visy park

yeah one small thing

i havent renewed my membership yet

so technically i am not a member

and again like everyone else

you clearly dont care whether i become a member or not

you just want a quick $200

sort this shit out seriously

and to think renewing 4 memberships was on my list of things to do in the coming days

hmmm - maybe not

Could've been worse, could've been the $200 raffle call from the dons

I really don't know why people are getting so upset about the raffle thing. Its an ongoing fundraiser that the club continue to promote. In my experience whoever rings is pleasant, tells you whats on offer. tells you how many tickets are available, tells you its $200 a pop. I say no thanks not today, they say no worries have a nice day. They don't push you to buy. They don't keep you on the line, trying to change your mind. They simply move on. I really don't think its as big a deal as some are making out.

I would find it more annoying that they have rung, had you on the line and not asked if you intend to join again this year and offer to sign you up again. Reason enough not to re-new though Grro? Maybe a little melodramatic don't you think?

the whole approach by the club is flawed

$200 isn't an issue, i can afford the ticket, i've bought some in the past (obviously why i get the calls)

BUT:

Don't treat me as a cash cow.

Don't give my details to an external party who is running the raffle for you and have them tell me its an exclusive members only raffle when i am clearly not a member because i haven't re-signed.

All at the same time as sending me poorly ghost written emails from players asking me whether i am with them or not and a ghost written CEO email telling me i have to sign so we can play more games at the G (shifting the blame to the supporter - setting them up for the fall anyway)

Do you not see what is wrong here?

This may seem selfish but what has the club done for me? why should i become a member? There are tonnes of things in the world all competing for my money - make me feel special

I get pretty much nothing for my membership as it is (being an interstate supporter) - i used to get voting rights which i exercised - now that has gone. so what do i get that makes me a valued member of the club? an apron?

If someone from the club called me today and said mr grrofunger i notice you have been a member for the past 10 years and havent re-signed yet, is there something we can do? we can sign you up today very easily and ............

and anything ! probably wouldnt have even taken an and anything ( though i think merchandise discount for online purchases should be a given - even if its only a once a year thing)

if the club had done this - i would have signed up 4 memberships today - then they could have added on the raffle ticket which i would have bought and then they could have given me even 5% discount and told me about the new clash guernsey and i would have bought that too.

see the difference in approach

a personal call, showing they value my membership, acknowledging how long i have been a member and making me feel special

and the club would have gotten a whole lot out of me in return

but they dont do this and instead only use an external provider to hassle me for $200?

totally wrong approach

oh and despite the melodrama i will probably still sign up sometime before the season starts, but they can wait for my money now.

i will only sign up because i want my kids to be life members - they have all been signed up pretty much at birth.

and thats why the club gets my money - because i have a stupid little thing going with my kids

all the other 'apathetic' supporters out there probably dont have a little thing like that going

and this is why the club continues to lag in membership performance.

Everything grro just said. I dont have the kids thing, but have been a member for 16 years (albeit as an AFL member with club support, which the club dont value, but I've ditched that this year and am just looking for some inspiration from the club to buy a club membership instead) so would like to keep my own little streak going.

As for not wasting my time, they lose me in the introduction speech where they dont ask if you have time to talk, but launch straight in and ask how you think the boys will go this season. If you gave a shit about how the boys went this season Id be more inclined to give a shit about your call and the raffle.

Got the same bullshit call. Fobbed it off. I paid up a month ago, but still nothing in the mail. You'd think seeing this year will be my 43rd consecutive year of what was called social club membership, they would at least acknowledge my patronage by sending me what I've paid for.
But nope. Made to wait. As I'm made to wait every bloody year. Getting a bit pissed off (understatement).

Exact reason I'm no longer a member. The only item of worth in the Long Distance Membership was the voting rights.

You're being used.

They have had no reason to improve because they knew, for all their complaints, people will sign up anyway.

As with you, I struggled regarding my son's membership. In the end I decided that it was more important to me to teach him about not being exploited, than being in a clique.

Pretty simple really. Make each member feel like they are the only member that matters.
