On the basis of all the scuttlebut, I'm assuming MM is a done deal. So what changes do you expect to see under the new coach?
I reckon:
1 - bigger bodies, and especially bigger bums Worked really well at Essendon* this season
2 - a lot more sacrificial team acts, especially shepherds (can't remember when was the last time I saw a Carlton player shepherd) You obviously don't watch games too carefully. Armfield was the most recent. Last quarter when he shepherded Eddie into an open goal and Eddie decided to kick it from 30 and missed. Before that, Ellard got a free when interfered with while shepherding. That's just two from the 4th quarter of the most recent match.
3 - midfielders being more accountable soryy but that's amotherhood statement. Exactly what does it mean? That if they don't get enough clearances they get dropped? If they miss a target by hand or foot they get dropped? if they don't get their quota of goals per week they get dropped? Please explain./color]
4 - much better defensive set ups behind the ball - instead of one-on-ones and lots of space in our defensive 50, I expect to see some of our defenders sitting back behind the ball (and a loose man back)[color=#FF0000]We rarely play man on man so this should be easy to organize. Just moreof the same. I think we SHOULD play MORE man on man than we do. A loose man behind the ball is something we do occasionally..
5 - a couple of fringe players stepping up to become first 18 players (although to be fair that happens with ever new coach) I agree. This could have been left out.
We know what Malthouse does so here are a few things I think we will see if we get him:
Less emphasis on tagging.
Less use of the centre corridor, although it has been one of our strengths on those occasions we have run through it.
Low risk use of the footy. Malthouse is a fan of the "one of the best ways to get a score is from a turnover" theory.
One ruck on the field at a time.
More set plays when the footy is in motion, in other words, players running to set positions when we have the footy so players WITH the footy know if they get into trouble, player 'x' will be in position 'y'. It is a trait of the good teams that they handball into what used to be a space only to find one of their players has filled it. It is not an accident.
(Edited because since my daughter spilled glue down the space bar, it has never been the same.)
