Hopefully he doesn't turn out to be a complete knob like that Lloyd kid.

I remember that Shane Robertson and Warren McKenzie both played in 3 losing GF's - 84 & 85 Reserves and 86 Seniors. So it was 4th time lucky for these two in 1987.

I think Carlton is going to be stiff that Warren McKenzie didnt end up playing another 33 games, Warren's son who is about 14 is an absolute gun and unfortunately does not qualify under the current father/son rule.

But we got James Cook out of his trade

.....staying true to the topic.....i bumped into mario Bortlotto in a chicken shop last week.......a back to back premiership player who was stiff NOT to play MORE senior games!

Busted his ankle at start of 84 and I think it was and never recovered fully from it - then we had players like Dean, SOS etc come to the club in 84 and 85 then 86 we had the huge influx from interstate

Stiff in one way, but if Southby had not been injured in 81 and 82 he would never had played in a flag, so he did alright

PS- also played in 83 night flag

Gotta agree with Bomba on this one. Mario may have been unlucky not to play more senior games, but he may be the luckest man to receive 2 premiership medals....after all, he didn't even run onto the ground in '81! (did a great job in '82 though...)

Tatts didnt get a run in 81 but did a mighty job on David Cloke in the GF playing at full-back, even though Cloke kicked 3 goals he wasn't the menace he was in the 2nd Semi two weeks earlier

Totally agree.

While on the topic of the 82 GF and players that were stiff......Fitzpatrick & Johnston were very unlucky not to win a Norm Smith. Either could have won the 82 Norm Smith and Fitzy could have easily won in 81 as well (not that anyone would begrudge Doull). Johnno could have won in 79, 82 or 87 (not that anyone would begrudge Harmes or Rhys-Jones).

Rioli was a terrific player, and deserves respect obviously, but I challenge anyone to watch the 82 GF now and say that it was a good decision to give him the medal. His opponent, Hunter, was among our best players and Rioli's best patch was when Hunter was off and Klomp was his opponent. In fact, I don't even think Rioli was Richmond's best player that day (I'd say the Flea, or maybe Raines).

I agree totally with what you have posted, Fitzy dominated 79 and 81 GF's. Johnno, Fitzy or Peter Francis could have all been fitting winners for 79.

in 82, Rioli got away from Klomp after Hunter was poleaxed by Jess after a fair hip and shoulder.

I still have paper clippings from the 82 GF where ALL the scribesfrom the Sun, Age, Herald etc voted Johnston as BOG. He kicked 1.3 that game, if he had of kicked 3.1 I reckon he may have been awarded the Norm Smith.

Johnno was good again in 87 and set the tone physically when he got Dipper with a fair hip and elbow

Johnno kicked the opening goals in the 82 and 87 GF's as well - gee I idolised that bloke growing up

Adam Mathews strung a few good games together (didnt happen very often) in the VFL when we were screaming out for ruckmen. They decided to go for a player like Beasy in the ruck instead when we needed to blood a youngster. Mathews ended up being delisted and went on and played for Lavington, held down CHF and won them a premiership. He was BOG in the grand final and looked agile, quick and for a tall fella won a lot of contested football when the ball fell to the ground.

Good call. Mathews had a shocking run with injuries but he had about a month in a row at the lower levels where he looked very good - thrown around from FF to the Ruck. Definitely could play football but after, what 4 years on the list, without a senior appearance, he was cut.

Given our ruck stocks at the time it was a pity he couldnt get a few more opportunities.

When Bomba Sheldon says he still has the paper clippings, you should believe him. i think he's only added about 15,000 images to the Blueseum over the last 2 years.

I rated Mathews highly but he just wasn't built for the rigors of AFL footy unfortunately
