Fev is one of the best forwards in the last 10 years.
If you had this years gameplan in it with Fev in the goal square rather then Carlos, we would be even better, as he would of commanded a 2-3 man double team and that would of left other players like yazzman, garlett and betts runs loose even more.
If Fev wasn't disciplined with the new gameplan, he should goto the bullants till he isn't a one man show. Fev isn't a one man show in Brisbane is he? His Score assists are up!!.

If you want to actually compare this year to last year though. Yazzman (played a few games) wasnt up to AFL level, Garlett (played a few games) was Inconsistent, Betts overweight, Hampson/Cloke were playing tall Forwards, Waite injured most year/playing backline, Houlihan playing mostly backline/not as fit

This year Yazzman and Garlett have went up a few gears and now are at AFL level, Betts is the fittest he has ever been due boat cruise, waite is playing forward, houlihan is playing forwardline, we got no cloke/hammer. Our midfield is killing it this year aswell with Judd back, so it means better delivery in to forwardline.

The gameplan we are using this year would not be possible last year as Yarran/Garlett weren't up to AFL level and Betts fitness is the best of his career. So what is the point of this thread? Take Fevola out of last years team and we would of relied on Cloke/Hammer/Setanta to do it all, as Yarran/Garlett/Betts aren't at the same level as they are this year.

Your argument is actually Spuds and one eyed. Take the emotion out of it and have a good think about what your saying, before you call other people spuds.

I honestly don't care if Fev got traded or not, but to start saying we are better without a superstar is pretty stupid. He is disciplined in Brisbane to give off handpasses n kicks to players running past for easier goals when hes only 25m out, so l dont think Fev was the problem at all, but more the coaching staff not disciplining him and the other players with the gameplan.[/quote]

Goltz - I have always defended FEv and love the guy BUT he is a big kid and will never grow up. He has gone from one crisis to the next in his life all self created and all damaging to the club he plays for. Imagine the disruptive influence he would have already had this year with the Bingle incident and his gambling ... if he was at Carlton we would be 1-7 by now ... but you hold onto your ideas its a free country. The leap that Carlton has taken this year in regards -to discipline and culture just seems a little strange that it happenned once FEV was shown the door.

Believe what you want its your delusion but if you think for one minute that FEV will not get up to his old tricks in Brisbane then the only reason for this is Brown and the ass whipping he would get from him. Carlton had no one of this elk to bring FEV in line so the arguement is mute .... but I will guarantee my posting ever again on talking carlton that sooner or later (probably sooner) the bad FEV will show up at Brisbane ... its the law of probability ... given enough time it WILL happen.

So feel free to BUMP this thread when you feel that FEV has changed his ways because frankly your one eyed view of FEV and thecarlton footy club living happily ever after is SPUDZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

I always thought that Carlton would take about a half season to recover from the loss of Fevola - but they have obviously done a lot better than that and clearly if this form continues - we will only a few wins off a finals spot by midseason.

So it has been no where near as bad as first thought. But this idea of Fevola being in a forward line that functions as it does now is totally fanciful - given Fevolas behaviour and character.

Development of our forward players means that he is no longer a good fit in the forward half at the club.

The now injured Fevola at Brisbane - will be remembered as a much needed bright spot in Carltons darkest years. Carlton doesnt need him to win a flag.

we are better side without fev.

we are no longer predictable going forward
we are no longer easy to defend against
we are no longer reliant on one key forward (ive always felt nervous that we where an injury away for fevola, from falling right away)

the very three things that made beating us last year, that much easier. beat fevola, beat carlton!

we got Lucas and Henderson out of the deal.
We are scoring at the same rate, if not higher, and our defensive work in the forward line is superb.
we have sentanta who has suprised the football world IMO and has stepped up to be a legitmate forward target
we have setanta's little helpers who are a an amazing trio when working together

there is no negative to losing Fevola IMO.

u are a SPUDALENKO :) you missed my whole point. Was not talking about offield issues. Was talking purely about onfield. I am actually happy with our forward line was just debating our forward line structure compared with him last year and this year. Didn't think l was one eyed at all.

Im over this thread wont be back, so write a big post i wont read :)

And as for the total garbage that Fev took out Carlos deliberately is laughable and shows they have absolutely no idea about the game and have never played it

We are all avid carlton watchers .... Fev was a one man show at Carlton .... was never going to change.

Be happy it all worked out rather than posting illogical arguements.

Your agument falls apart with your second sentence Goltz.
"If you had this years gameplan in it with Fev in the goal square..."

Fevola has shown over 12 years of petulant, self-absorbed ego-centric driven bevhaviour that there is no way that we ever could or would have Fevola in the goal square with this years game plan.

Pagan and Ratten both tried on several occasions to try and get Fevola to accept a 'lesser role for the benefit of the team' but the ego-maniac would have none of it. Thus we got the sulks, the sooks, the refusal to chase hard, the refusal to share the ball and give it off to a player in a better position, and as club we suffered for it because other players were unable to 'develop' in a role whilst that selfish buffoon was situated in the square.

You can blame the coaching staff and the club admin for not disciplining him....but have you forgotten how many times he was dragged and was on the phone to Pagan in the dark years, the boots being taken off in the sulks, being sent down to full-back on Gherig as punishment... geez the querelous episodes that we saw in the number 25 continue to mount up and we still have people who continue to overlook the problem we had at full forward.

Seriously, when does Fevola have to stand up and take resonsibilities for his own actions both on and off the field. His problems have always been viewed as "someone else's fault". Why did they kick the ball to him so much?; why did they get in his way?; why didn't they leave him one out all the time?"; "why did the opposition double team him all the time?".
Fair dinkum - why did they kick the ball to him so much? Because he was so self-absorbed that he cracked the sulks and abused those who didn't kick it to him on repeated occasions.
Why did they get in his way? - Because they were following coaches orders in playing the team game and developing their own abilities.
Why did the opposition double team him all the time? - Because the opposition knew that because of Fevola's personality, Carlton was never going to try and develop a different game plan because it had to stoke this prick's ego.
THAT is the only issue here. Why did the club feel it had to stoke his gigantic ego. Blame Pagan for prefering him as the main man and implementing a one-man forward line. Blame Pagan for not being strong enough to get the message through his frickin head, but ultimately, blame Fevola for being a total a*rsehole who didn't play for the club - he played for himself.

Our whole team would never have developed whilst he was here... how can people not see that. The backline and midfielders running forward would have continued to play the 'kick it to Fev' game because his personality demanded that if they didn't, they would cop an earful.

How good is it to see different blokes developing their skills all together as a group - a UNIT. (full of UNITY - look that up!) rather than bit player who were considered extremely lucky if the ball went anywhere near them.

Good @#$%&! riddance.

Playing full forward for Carlton has always been about Brendan Fevola for his own self-importance, and very little to do for the betterment of the club as a whole.

I've heard from a very reliable source that Judd kicked it to Fevola all the time because he was terrified of copping an earful.

"80% of the game is played between the ears"?

whether Fev is a better player is not the point.

every player on our list is getting more out of their collective '80'% because they have a singular purpose.

no longer a one man show.

In hindsight I don't think there's too many who'd disagree that we should've traded Fev a few years at least.

Our forwards a working as a unit which is a delight to see.

fearful of copping an earful?
Doesn't seem like Judd to me.
But Fevola did seem to have too much influence over the entire playing group.
Great to see the forward half developing in 2010.

Fevs 'presence' in the forward line no doubt hindered our other forwards from seriously demanding the incoming football, IMO.

Fevola's absence just has to be a key driver of the vastly improved mental application at Carlton.

In an ideal world where FEV had a different, smarter brain and not the 14 year old's brain he possesses, then yes he could work within the new structure.

But in the end, with all the chances we gave him, he ran the show the way he wanted to. People seem to forget he had burned his bridges with a lot of people come Brownlow night (including Judd) .... I did not mean to bite Goltz's head off but how anyone can think for one second that the unity we see today, all players playing for one another etc could have occurred with Fev still in the team are dreaming. It just would not have happenned.

I in no way profess to being a football genius, but it does not take a huge brainpan to work that one out.

Give some credit where it is due ... Setanta has surprised a lot of people ... the guy gives 200% and bleeds for Carlton. If you saw his game last week he came close to holding some really tricky grabs that I never thought would have been a chance, his assists, his 2nd and third efforts and his forward defensive pressure ... we talk about Russle as a big improver (and he is) but I would dare say Setanta has improved just a much if not more.

Setanta will surprise us all by the end of the year, he will keep and improve on his form this year. I was a bit of a sceptic at the start of the year but have been well and truly converted ... a forward line with Setanta in it can go all the way (not this year) ... mark my words.
