It was Beams that made contact with him I think. Robinson was right next to him.

Ditto. Don't say much these days. Another 3 or 4 more goals up, I would've felt better. We're not in good form, I reckon. But we can get better. It's going to be tough, next week though. We are going to have to play better.

It was a scrappy terrible game but the Pies came to frustrate us, not beat us.
I'll take the win happily but i would have liked to see more run. We seem obscessed with tempo football. We chip, chip chip, then get to outside 50. No one leads or tries to create space so then we kick a long bomb to the square. Kind of defeats the purpose of slowing the ball down.
I was happy with the pressure we applied around the ground. Cloke being out was good for our mobility.

Exactly Deano - this is why "The Filth" always fall at the final hurdle - whilst we were shite during 2002 and 2007 - Joffa and the rest of the jerks over there got there jollies by handing out wooden spoons while they beat an undermanned/under-resourced Carlton.

We are rightly not happy with this scrappy win (well a little bit happy  ) - we know we still have a lot of work to do.

We wont be happy till we have 17 (18, 19 and 20) firmly in the cabinet - "The Filth" on the other hand will go on collecting glorious runner's up trophies.

I think there may have been as many as 3 incidents of contact with the umpire. And it looks like Mitch collects one in the background in either the Waite mark or tackle in the opening stages of the game.

No doubt we'll hear all about it.

I wonder if Maxwell will hear anything today?

Synners that was my exact point -EVERY TEAM has injuries yet we only hear about Collingwood if they lose

I was being facetious and obviously some on the list ie Bentick are on the fringe but walker and warnock at the very least arent -neither carrazzo and grigg in my view

Still wouldnt have won over the last few years with those guys out -evidence that our list depth is better and that we are improving

To be honest I was worried about the game prior to it starting. I had a sick feeling in my stomach that the Blues might lose. I mean we have lost a few we should have won already this season, and having that "monkey" on your back can effect confidence.

It was an ugly game of footy, for a number of reasons, but some of them standout to me:

1. Boundary line football : I'm yet to understand why the team plays so wide. It was clear in our opening round win, that when we "own" the corridor we play our best football. Plain and simple.

2. Stagnant Football : Too many times players were flat footed. They seemed to lack consistent run form the backline to attack. The amount of times a player would handball or kick to another staionary target was horrible. We cannot afford to play like that against most other teams - especially those that play accountable football.

3. The "uber flood" - Collingwood employed it ad nauseam through the game - probably to lessen the damage on the scoreboard, but it seems to me that our gameplan or lack of it struggles against such tactics. This is something which needs to be addressed this week, because Adelaide will likely also try and "choke down" the game.

Not an inspiring win but you can only beat who you play.
Collingwood were woeful.
Great weekend of footy.

Richmond lost.
Essendon* lost.
Collingwood lost.
Carlton WON.

I tipped 8 :smoking:

Given that Collingwood decided to play 'scrag' footy, I was very happy with the 51 pt win. Also pleasd with the fact that we had no injuries or reports.

Not that I am gloating, but also to kill off Collingwoods season is a joy to behold.

This talk about killing off collingwoods season is a bit premature imo. They've show in the past that they can get on a bit of a roll, &they've got some quality players out atm. Still 14 rounds to go.....We're only 1 win and % in front of them....

I was a bit surprised with the crowd figure. There was a few seats free at the top of the MCC but otherwise it was full. I expected the figure to be 90k

Nah, its dead, they are two games behind the line* now and with thier percentage it may as well be three. Feed in that Mick doesn't seem to have the drive this year and it spells trouble.

*line, you need a minimum 50/50 win ratio plus a % of 100plus to make finals

There were small gaps in each section in every stand. I picked 75 myself.

They rocked up bloody late too...

Sure there's room for improvement, in fact a lot of improvement, but that's to be expected...just look at the number of kids we had playing.

Also consider the difference Warnock, Walker and Carrots will make to that team.

There's still a lot of up side and we have to improve running the ball through the corridor. I couldn't believe how many times we were running the ball out at CHB with an open corridor and a Carlton player in there ready as the next link. Why go sideways? Needs attention.

What please me most is that Ratten finally decided to mix it up in the forwardline. The decision to drop Cloke and Wiggins just changed the team's fabric and focus. We got some movement happening and we didn't have redundant players taking up valable positions. The faith in Hampson also paid off.

Robbo, Waite, Austin,Hammer and Kreuzer rotating in the forwardline, whilst Bettsy crumbed from them, Fevola moving around the forwardline providing a useful link, and the ability of midfielders to press and rotate forward (Judd,Simmo, Murphy, Stevo) and snag a goal.

Finally Ratts had the balls to make the overdue changes and add a bit of genuine pace and movement through the forwardline.

And Yarran, sure he didn't star, but he scored a nice goal, assisted another and missed a sitter in what we would all call a quiet game. Now that kid is a natural forward.

We should have scored more goals (and the umps gave them a few which should not have counted) but that's where we will improve.

I thought Fev looked pretty free in his movement, and it looked as though his role was premeditated. I'm sure there was no plan for him to score goals, unless it unfolded that way.

I think Hampson was the one who allowed us to play as we did (and Robbo). He freed up Kreuzer, in fact I thought Hammer's ruck work is better than anything Krezer has didhed up in his last 2 years as a ruckman...not as a ruck rover though.

Hammer has shit loads more presence (and upside) than Jacobs and I, like some other posters know that if we persevere with him, he will be a superstar when he gets with the rhythm.

Isn't it amazing that Hammer and Robbo replace Cloke and Wiggins then presto we have some dynamics back at work.

Backline I thought were very good. Sure the midfield pressure was fantastic, and the HBF Armfield and Scotland did well on their men. Backline, was not too tall for mine, as I think they are quite athletic...just look at Bower (he's a freak)...just Jamo's kicking in the last 3 weeks...WTF is going on there? I thought he has shoulder issues, but there's something for sure wrong with above the shoulders as far as his kicking goes. Thornton's timing is very good, and I guess you get that when the ball hovers in the sky for such a long time, and Jamo was solid.

How about that kid Austin...forward/ back....maybe we should call him the Swan, (as in McKay) but I should save that for Waite for now, because Hammer may become that in the future.

There was a good blend of youth and experience out there. I'm sure we can move the ball faster, and as for height, imo it's an advantage, especially with the pace our talls possess.

I'd stick with Yarran for a few games to get him moving, and involved, so he dreams about the game, but please don't expose him against Cats, Saints and Swans...I don't think those games will help him or our team. There's always Houla who can be the forward emergency for Yarran when it's time to rest him.

Scotland was just fantastic. What a great mover and tough at the contest.

But JUDD was the man, and the real difference between the 2 teams and he received fantastic support from the apprentices Gibbs Murphs and Simmo....geez they were good too...elite performance by the midfield yesterday. I would have loked more from Hadkley and Russell, but I guess like usual they had defensive roles to play.

I thought Ratts was going to lose the plot in the 2nd Q and Malthouse was going to outcoach him, but lucky for him and Carlton that Judd took the game on by the scruff of the neck.

We won
We thrashed a flooding Collingwood
We did it without playing polished footy, and at time zig zag possession footy.
We did it without Cloke and Setanta (talls) and Wiggins and Houlihan (medium sized).
We did it without Warnock, Walker, Carrazzo and Grigg all out injured.

If you thought Hammer showed signs yesterday, just wait till we get Warnock into the team and see the damage Kreuzer and Hammer are going to do around the ground and up forward; very difficult match ups with pace.

I think that's the biggest thing that people are overlooking, after getting smashed in the 1st 1/4 Collingwood set out to strangle the life out of the game with an ultra-flood.

Correct weight Wojee.

Pies went ugly after 1/4 time and brought us down to their level.

Geez, we really are ruing the loss to the Scum.

Take a look at the ladder. Our % is the 3rd best, so had we won one of those games we lost by 4pts, we would be sitting in 3rd spot now.

Lot to like about The Blues, now that the MC have finally shown some balls and picked a 'team for the future' (ie: playing the Austins and Yarrans and Hampsons, instead of the slow Clokes and Houlihans).

Young defense developing together (Austin, Bower, Jamison, Joseph).

And some quality young talls (Kruezer, Hampson, Warnock).

Pies didn't have Fraser, Didak, Thomas, Cloke and Medhurst, but we didn't have Warnock, Walker, Carrazzo, Grigg.

Will be interesting to see how the Adelaide 'Cyborgs' play this week...

They have tried to play with more adventure... but they dont have the cattle..

A Carlton player collided with another umpire in the last quarter, not sure who it was though.

Watched bits and pieces of it throughout the day in amongst my daughters birthday and came up with 4 things that really stood out for me.

1. Chris Judd. The look away handpass to Yarran was sheer brilliance. You can't teach that stuff. You either have it or you don't. His pack mark was fantastic as well. Easily his best game for the club so far.

2. Hammer. He and Warnock are going to smash teams in years to come. Might not be AS mobile as Kreuzer, but I reckon he goes pretty close. Moves very well for a big and is dangerous when pushed forward.

3. Mitch. Is there anything this kid can't do? I like how we've used him so far. Brought him in for a couple of weeks and then drop him for a couple when he looks like he's getting burnt out. The spell in the 2s has done him the world of good. The MC have made a few stuff ups this year, but the way they've handled Robbo has been outstanding.

4. Waite. I feel his natural position is at CHB, but yesterday he showed he can go forward when needed and kick goals for us. Given his opposition wasn't much, I still think he played his role to a tee. Gives us another avenue to goal if Fev is down or not there. That turn and goal from 45 out was inspirational.
