That's interesting Warby on Walls not going that hard at the contest all the time, for some reason I've always pictured him as a real hard nut.
Mate.....my Wife and I saw every game he played.....clever....mobile....reasonably quick for 6'4"....NOT a high mark normally....at all....wasn't able to dominate games a la Carey or Kernahan or Hart.....but a classy CHF....but NOT a GREAT player....his biggest attribute was tapping the ball out to team mates when perhaps he was expected to mark it by everyone else at the ground.
No doubt....he wasn't pushed around but....he was no Maclure or Vin Waite......he was no enforcer.
Well, I saw every game he played except the 30.30 vs Hawthorn, and he was a dead set hard nut who was always hard at the contest, took all the punishment handed out to him, and gave a bit back himself.
gerry atric remembers him the same as I did ... a great CHF who was not a great overhead mark due to lack of spring, but invariable brought the ball to ground as his role dictated. The less observant/tolerant fans gave him heaps for not marking everything that came his way, but he always gave a genuine contest, and indeed was a consistent big game performer.
He was not an enforcer, more a niggler. Also, Vin Waite was not really an enforcer either ... not a squeak from him in the 1973 GF, but Walls stood up all game.
A few others agree too. He was named in the CFC Team of the Century, and was never going to get the CHF gig in that one.
Truly a great of the game.
