We all remember how we felt when it was first announced that that we were found guilty of 'deliberate, elaborate and sophisticated breaches of the Salary Cap'. We all remember how we feared opening a newspaper or watching the new for weeks on end, as the news seemed to get worse and worse and watching our great club disintegrate before our eyes.

So for those of us who remember that day, how does this time compare? And who will be our saviour this time around? I know we don't really want to think about those times right now and even contemplate this having the long-term damage that day did, but it may be therapeutic to get our feelings in the open.

No No No No.

This is does not compare.

This is entertaining.

Gives me something to read during the off season.

Seriously though, you'd be pretty naive to think that our boys are the only ones who had a get together during the break. Three of them have made a mistake. They're not the first and certainly wont be the last. Hopefully they will learn from it.

Unfortunately the media and " The Sky is Falling " supporters never will.

This is a piss take, isn't it?

Black Friday was a million times worse than this... Comparing the two is mind boggling, owing to how incredibly incomparable they are.

A bunch of players got drunk on their end of season Christmas party. We didn't contravene the laws of the game.

This stuff is fueled by those out there, not necessarily the media, who cannot help but live in a world full to the brim of righteous butt-holes.

It's late December, the players were on leave from the club, get over it and move on. Come early January they'll all be back, heads down and bums up ready to attack 2010. Give them the time to unwind and cool down after a long year... Surely they can be afforded some normality, if only for one week.

one persons normality is another persons failure...

I cant see any real parallels. Black Friday was when the Knights Templar were all locked up, tortured and killed, wasn't it?

OH that Black Friday. The Carlton Black Friday was more about being caught cheating and being held in disgrace. Last week to me was more embarrassment and just a massive highlight for all to see, whethere ot not there was any doubt, that we still have a long way to go in terms of maturity, leadership and management.

As an aside do you think management may have safely presumed that the trading of Fevola was such a big statement that they wouldn't need to make a follow up statement so soon? It was a massive call yet some have stuffed up not 6-8 weeks after.

..yeah, i reckon that's a fair statement.. ..off-loadin' Fev was a big statement, even if we were practically forced to make it.... ..still, it's like they made their statement, started an intense pre-season training regime and then just figured, hey,, it's the holidays now.... ..our work is done for now, let's All take time off..

You're right I think molsey. i would imagine that they are shellshocked by the sheer stupidity of the players involved. But then again, having dealt with these boys on a daily basis for years, maybe they should have suspected the sort of things they were likely to do.

The Carlton Football Club has been synonymous for off-field drama. Particularly off-field drink related drama. But times have changed. We can't hide these stories behind the bar at Blush & Stutters anymore. I suspect the stories that still permeate through the corridors at Visy Park make some current day players wish they were born in the generation where the boys played hard and at times drank harder.

Those members of the Spirit of Carlton would be well advised to fire a warning shot over the current day players heads before they head out for their next summer golf outing.

* You don't get too many chances.
* The best part about footy is the mateship. Extend that experience into your future lives by becoming a part of a Premiership side. There aren't many players who come back to the club in any capacity who aren't Premiership players.
* Sacrifice the small stuff for the bigger picture. It's worth the effort.
* The media aren't your friends.
* Anyone's opinions outside the club's inner circle doesn't matter.

So no comparison to Black Friday...none whatsoever. One is heartache. The other is shame.

Doesn't compare for me at all.
I've long since stopped caring about what players do off the field.

Anyone who sees grown men being paid a mountain of cash for kicking a ball around a bit as a role model for society is bound to be disappointed.

No comparison for mine. There would have been few clubs that could have survived what was handed to us on Black Friday, compounded by the state of the balance sheet and the playing list at the time. It was sort of like the perfect storm for sports administration and it was not clear that we would make it through to the other side. I remember that for a couple of years after that it was difficult to see a way out, and if Sticks hadn't talked Richard Pratt into returning to the club I think we would still be in a pretty horrible place.

What has reportedly happened of late sounds pretty ordinary to say the least, but I am hoping that the riot act will be read to the entire list behind closed doors on Monday before an extended session to allow the players to think about what a privilege and responsibility it is to represent the club and your team mates - maybe this would be a good time to re-visit the infamous 100 hundreds.

We've lost the plot comparing an Xmas booze up to Black Friday.

Culture is probably no worse than most sides just that we ended up in the paper. Media coverage doesn't define club culture though. West Coast won a flag with the worst culture ever. Until it drifts on-field, and last year's result suggest it's hasn't, we overate culture. Only thing is we have to make sure it doesn't and we can use this to re-inforce that.

As for a comparison to Black Friday, get a grip. Footy turns perfectly intelligent people into paranoid numbnuts.

ah yes but it was an outdated culture that led to black friday in the first place and we still have outdated cultures.

So i think in manyways its the same thing

A couple of big wins should do the trick. Clubs turn this sort of "culture" thing around pretty quick. See maggies, Eagles, Swans, Crows, Hawks, North, Saints etc.

Not good look all the same and the players should be punished for being a little stupid.

I worry the things that led the club into that mess (Elliot & co's culture?) still exist. Have we learnt the lessons?

The arrogance of the current President still enjoying the company and the ear of Elliott and his yes men after all that's gone down in the last 10 years or so...

The arrogance of Harrison taking a cheap shot at someone who has the balls to put their hand up at election time by saying he wasted $50k of the clubs money...

Great role models...

The similarity of the circumstances leading up to the two is that many clubs are guilty of doing the same things as we have. We were stupid enough to get caught.
