Shrewd move.

2 years assisting Williams but in essence acting as game day coach.

Then after that 3 year deal as new head coach.

So that's 5 x $500k

Laidley took an average list with no resources to a prelim final, and other finals appearances. They played an attractive, effective brand of football. North consistently out-strategised opponents during his tenure, an area where Ratts needs some help, IMHO. We definitely need some serious help with kick-in strategy, and foward line structure and planning (I invite fellow members to watch how often Fevola and Setanta are in the same area, contesting the same ball).

We could do much worse than getting Laidley. Although we should be making a MASSIVE play to get SOS for next year (I know, I know, but time to build bridges...), and Hinkley, who may feel some experience at another club might help his senior coach chances.

SOS???

Why????

Because he's been responible for a defence that has conceded the fewest points of any team for about 40 years? On second thoughts, we have Doull, Southby, McKay and Jesaulenko, we don't need SOS as coach.

So....PRO:

90% guaranteed 5 year tenure @ $500k.

CON:
Having to live in Adelaide
Having to deal with Choco Williams
Having to put up with Cornes', Burgoynes, etc
Having to put up with Port Adelaide supporters.

Hmmmmm

Midfield and all over the ground pressure...

I think you dont understand the modern game....

Zac Dawson and SOS isnt responsible for a great StKilda defence..... their gamestyle is....

Its hard to believe people dont get how the game is played........nowadays...

As far as I can see, Dawson is still a spud, particularly one-out.

Thats my point... the strength of StKilda defensively is a team collaboration not... a back 6 coached by SOS scenario.

Teams attack as a whole in this new age of footy.. and same defensively...

If it wasn't for the the Saints athleticism, strength and ability with the core of their playing group being in the prime of their career they would be unable to play the style of game that they do. It's nice that they have a solid group of players in their back half but it is a 22 man effort that has gotten them to the point that they are at.

They have a great team with awesome depth, not a special defensive half

Yes but when your system is attacked, you want players who can think, react and work around that.

Personally, I thought Hawthorn was doing so prior to implementing its zone defence. I guess they go in the same pile with Adelaide, Collingwood & Essendon*. Let's see how St Kilda's play stacks up.

Their depth is not that awesome. They are a team of well conditioned foot-soldiers for the most part.

A guy like McQualter getting a game before Armitage is an excellent example of that.
