Yesterday's loss and Fev's pain after the game reminded me so much of Round 2, 1993 vs Essendon*, & Sticks' agony after failing to score with the last kick of the day which cost us the game.

Like Fev yesterday, Sticks had a brilliant game up to the death, and we would not have been in a position to win without his efforts. But, unfortunately, people only remember the kick he shanked at the end, not the inspiring marks and goals before it.

For those that don't remember what happened the following week in '93, we beat Hawthorn in a thriller at home, with Sticks kicking the winning goal.

Let's hope redemption comes just as quickly for Fev & the 2009 side as it did for Sticks & the 1993 side....

I quite like a comparison Mark Fine made between winning premierships and making love:

"The lead-up to a premiership is like making love. At the end of making love there is the crescendo, like the time a team finally wins a premiership. But before that crescendo there are moments of pleasure and in footy, that is when you watch your team's development progress each week".

This quote is very relevant to us

WTF would Mark Fine know about winning a premiership.

Let's go sainters let's go.

It's amazing what a premiership will do for arrogance levels.

I agree they've become one of the more patronising set of supporters going around in the last 6 months. And if i have to listen to Jim from Hawthorn again doing the rounds on the various radio stations ... :banghead:

Great thread Danny ... have to give my version of events.

Here I am in Brazil ... had my computer hooked up to my plasma and was getting a video feed through the net until some flower on footy forum gave the site away on the AFL monitored site and it was closed down ... could have gutted the idiot with a blunt spoon!

So at 3.48 in the morning I am listening to MMM's call of FEVs final shot on goal ... do not remember who it was but called it went through! Then 2 seconds later said it was a poster!

OHHHH THE AGONY, its like getting what you want for xmas as a kid and then switching it on and it does not work! The commentator should be shot for such a HUGE mistake!

Anyway was headbutting the wall (seriously) for the next minute.... knew we would not be given another chance, siren sounded, kept headbutting the wall for a further 9 minutes (even more serious) but then the blood started getting into my eyes and I stopped.

Sat down on the sofa and was just collecting my thought and damn it even though I was feeling completely gutted, still could not believe what an excellent game of footy it must have been, that although a loss should never be condoned, was the right kind of loss. Everyone was talking the week before that this game would show where we were. Well they know we are coming is an apt slogan. We are not there but by God we are coming.

Next year's slogan should read we have arrived!

Even an idiot can see we are going to be a big force this year (top 6 finish) ... not sure we are close to a tilt at the cup yet (am thinking more a finals win to be satisfied) but the really exciting aspect is ... 80% of our players still have improvement in them due to the age of our squad. We still do not have close to our best team on the park ... I think Warnock, Yarran, Garlett, Robinson, Walker and a few others will step up during the year and take away our bottom six (not naming names).

All this went through my mind bleeding on the sofa ... and a faint smile crept over my face ... still bloddy hurt though!

Anyway am trully envious of everyone in Oz for being able to go to the matches ... when not if we make the GF, no expense will be spared to be there!

GO BLUES MAKE US AND DICK PROUD

Important point. Except for the 50 we should have had late, the umps were OK and that is important to create a great game. I sometimes feel sorry for them (except the stupid dwarf). The AFL has tried to make their job as difficult as possible. Try to put yourself in their shoes. The rules now either are so balck and white that they can't apply common sense or they have to make such complex interpretation on others that it's easy to get it wrong in the heat of the game. If just the AFL would focus on reviewing the stupid changes in rules and interpretations instead of stopping any discussion.

the thing about that loss is that it hurts the way a loss should hurt.

Not like the smashings that leave you numb, or angry, despairing, left with no sense of the way forward, no light.

This was a loss because two evenly matched sides slogged it out and one wins the other doesn't.

It hurt because we could have won. We had the chances. Not just that last shot, many chances.

But it is the right sort of hurt, the sort that says, flower 'em we'll beat them next time.

That's better than the slump home wondering how we'll ever win another game again.

A few more tweaks with players, a few more steps in the path down disciplined football at all times and we will not be coming we will have arrived.

You're right. I've been wandering around since like a bear with a sore head - seething and furious. But DB - you are quite right. It hurts like a loss should - I'd forgotten that feeling.

I agree about that Scottish git "Jim from Hawthorn" and have posted about him several times; but,

we Carlton fans complaining about others being arrogant! What about "we are Carlton, .... the rest".

Pot, kettle, black.
