I know it's a bit of cliche, as everyone wants to play finals, but in Ratts you sense there is an unwavering determination to see the job completed.

... of course... he gets the arse if he doesnt...

True that, but I know what I mean, even if nobody else does. :P

..was meaning Hartlett, the supposed actual CHF on the list.. ..not mentioned by Ratts..

Yeah I was just mucking around

Although not too much, considering Eddie was our most effective lead up player around HF for the first half of the the year...

Makes you wonder though, Hartlett not getting a mention there. If he's that far off the pace, why keep him? He was out of contract wasn't he?

Unless it's a smokescreen to keep Harts off the radar?

I wouldn't read anything into who or who wasn't mentioned - Ratten is far more articulate than the script of the article suggests so either a) someone else at Carlton answered the questions, b) they had a very quick conversation or c) JA didnt get to write it all down.

Hartlett has only played 8 underwhelming games so probably isnt an option for public review anyway.

Yeah c'mon, get with the program; you guys. We are talking about the SailorMan here. He doesn't use knives. He is an expert in the use of the Cutlass or more likely the Scimitar! :P

The rotation policy at CHF doesnt grab me ....Fisher, Walker etc are not CHFs and to me rotation is an excuse when you dont have the real deal CHF to play in the position week in week out...
I like structure and good Carlton teams have always had good CHF's....not fill ins ..

Completely agree, that was the first thing I thought when I read the article. He said the same thing before last season, and clearly it didn't work.

Obviously, you can't just click your fingers and produce a CHF out of thin air, but I think they have to pick a forward structure and stick with it. To me, the two obvious CHFs are Waite and Hartlett. Clearly, there are issues with playing either of those at CHF. Fisher is NOT a second key tall, and playing there this year killed him and hurt the team. Cloke, jury is out. Walker is an interesting one, he's almost big enough, and defnitely mobile enough. In today's football, it's not a ludicrous idea.

Whoever it is, pick one and stick with it.

Better a rotation policy than a full time dud. Personally I think Walker would be an awesome choice - his pace and attack on the ball and opponents would make him damn hard to match up on.

We could always play Brown or Pavlich at the CHF. You are of course spot on RR. You can't pull your socks up if you are not wearing any. Walker could be a very difficult much up across half forward and I don't think he would be playing the traditional CHF role. (If such a role, still even exists?)

I dont have a problem with Walker playing forward ie HF, FP but not CHF in a traditional role. I see that as the domain of a bigger player ie Kruezer, Cloke, Hartlett.
I'm all for Walker slipping down to a pocket for a rest after some onball work and creating match up problems but asking him to play CHF after having so much trouble with shoulder injuries is looking for trouble.
Ditto for Fisher who has never looked like being able to hold down CHF......

re: socks?...maybe the question should be asked why we are not wearing any?

..not sure why harts wasn't mentioned, though i personally don't see him bein' CHF.. ..personally i think if we don't have a true CHf but have instead a very good HF line then we use them as all very mobile types.. ..walks, waite, houla's across hff would all work very well i reckon.. ..ppl aren't too fond of waite's early days up forward but i think he showed alot, just his youth/inexperience let down consistency.. ..i still think he's a far more natural forward, all year played down back but always kicked goals/provided good options when pushed forward by ratts.. ..him, walks and houla's after their returns from injury all had immediate impact when thrown forward.. ..waite may not be a traditional chf, but that doesnt mean he cant be a roaming sort.. ..plenty of chf's don't play the position old school anyways..

yeah, you only have to look at that game in 2007 when waite was acting captain against the Hawks to realise what a difficult match up Waite is up forward and how effective he can be there.

He got a working over as the HP backman in the first half with 5 goals against him, and then being switched to the forwardline in the second half and kick 5 goals.

5 goals in a half against a dominant team, before the Judd days.

He's a forward, and some ppl just don't want to see it.

He is a nightmare to match up on for opposition players and coaches.

Play him forward....every now and then, otherwise on a wing.....mmmmm.

No you just fibbed a little when you implied Lance was not carrying a serious knee injury when you knew he did, one that severely hampered his mobility. Still Lance has retired now and I am more interested my seating in the social club for next year.
