That's a very 1970's way of looking at it.
Who would you rate as being the best coaches out there at the moment? Tompson, Roo's, Clarkson, and maybe even Worsfold all have a very close relationship that could be seen as mates and yet 3 of them currently and I would suggest all of them soon are premiership coaches.
I would rate Matthews, Malthouse and Ross as the best coaches if that means anything....
And your summation that "could be seen as mates" is just that... you don't know, I don't know. But if you're a mate, you let little things slide by. You can have a good relationship with a playing group without being a mate.
Some principles stand the test of time....
