I got to know Noel Duckworth a few years ago at training at PP.....there were quite a few of us who were there every night.

Noel was a real gentleman in the truest sense of the word.....R.I.P.

Sad news, a really terrific man, a devoted Carlton guy, a bloke who I seem to recall loved having a good time. He always had a bit of mystique about him because of his fantastic name (I suspect lots of people have no idea of his surname, I certainly didn't), his leonine mane and the fact that he travelled vast distances from the Rutherglen region. As someone reflected last night in the lead up to a toast to North East, all of these things suggested extensive connections with bikies.

My favourite memory of him will always be at one of the latter Wacker Awards, or maybe it was a pre-game at the Great Northern, when Noel with a massive, albeit groomed, beard presented at the bar at the dining room, stood there and ordered a couple of handles of ale while proudly sporting the personalised Penguin polo shirt with massive black and white photographic transfer of Bruce Doull on the back. The lack of AFL sanctioned merchandise on his person suggested a genuine football supporter and devoted Carltonian.

Mmmmm what a wild and righteous shirt I thought to myself, and as an aside I also thought two Flying Doormats for the price of one. I asked Noel about it and he was stoked that I was into his personalised Doull polo. It was then that I realised that it was part of a bigger ritual of coming to Melbourne to enjoy the Blues, see friends and have a drink. Upon reflection, I half wonder if Noel modelled himself on a High Plains drifter version of the Flying Doormat as both were phlegmatic strong and silent types.
