I reckon I have now read that Brad Fisher kicked 50 goals last year in 4 threads.

Please note: Brad Fisher Season 2007 - 39 goals.

Close enough.

If he gets his mandatory two per game as per his second half of last year he's worth 45-50.

I can't see us playing finals next year. I think the back half needs to be a lot tighter or our big scores won't be big enough, as per last year. Others have said it before me. Games are won by teams with good defences. Waite is a good start but the temptation to use him all over the ground has to be resisted. Setanta has to be allowed to settle in to one possie down back. Thornton is OK if he doesn't have to take the #1 fwd every week. Jamison looks the goods but is still learning too. That still leaves a couple of spots. Maybe Walker, maybe Ando, maybe Banno, maybe one of the newbys but they will need a year at least playing together before they can resemble a solid backline.
I'll be happy with a 9-12 finish. Lower than that will be disapointing.

Our midfield is strong now and that is great. It does mean we will have the ball more of the time and get it forward more times. This will reduce the pressure on our backline but we do have deficiencies. FB? CHB? Ruck? While many have views we don't have agreement on who should fill those positions.

The low ratings are appropriate. BS is right about needing a solid backline - I share the view of finishing between 9th & 12th this year. I'm with Don & Sniff in seeing the ranking of 12th for our rucks as generous.

We had 2,911 points kicked against us last season. By this measure it is by far the worst year our backline has had. We gave up 63 more goals than Richmond. I know we were learning and experimenting but we deserve the ranking of 16th and are starting off a long way behind the rest.

Very good midfield and agree with Molly on Simpson....Kade is A grade and one of our best....

Defense...ordinary
Rucks.....youthful potential but nothing proven or substantial at this stage.
Forwards....Fev and Fisher but not much after that, we will struggle to kick goals unless someone like Hartlett can step up.....

Good midfielders kick goals as well as set up play. Good midfielders will produce more goals from our forwards and ease pressure off the defence.
With minimul injuries to key playmakers we can make the 8 I reckon

i think budzy makes a really goods point here -quicker delivery to the forwards and goal scoring mids are so important and would actually take pressure away from our questionable defence as it would slow down the rebound

The massive amount of points kicked in the against ledher has more to do with the Denis Pagan gameplan and the lack of development coupled with the midfield being flogged and Lance and Kouta not chasing hence setting us up for a domino affect defensively.

I believe the midfield will step up this year and control the ball more.. the gameplan will be more solkid and not as fragile and the defenders will develop rather rapidly.

I dont believe the defence will be a massive problem this year...

I think we're all hoping for another stellar Fisher year, but he is yet to kick 100 goals in his career!

I disagree somewhat about our defence. I think it's still a problem, but not as big a problem as last year. The reason I think it's still going to cause some problems is that season 07 stunted the development of these guys in a lot of ways, and no doubt left their confidence shot. As you say Synners, it was Pagan's gameplan that was to blame for this. How do you think they felt seeing the ball bounce back without pressure at 100mph again and again with all their teammates up the other end of the field? There was no support, no efforts to try and improve their cohesiveness as a unit, and it seems clear that Den-Den told them "Just make do with what you've got, and try your best"

There will be improvement this year, sure. But I think the scars left by Pagan will take longer to go away than a few months.

The players are rapt.. theyre rapt with Ratts.. theyre rapt with training and they are approaching each day at training with renewed passion and energy.
They feel stronger.. they feel smarter and getting Judd and Stevo back has given them renewed confidence.

The players have been having school lessons on the different philosophies and tactics to play the game.
Sure they still have to put them into use... but its turning around and everythging is brighter today than it was yesterday.. and each day will be another step forward.

Some of the players themselves have not been holding back in talking about the difference in attitude.. training and overall mental and physical preparedness to play the game...

I think youll see a massive difference.. it might not translate to top 4 or even maybe not to top 8 but a huge leap forward nonetherless.

With the falling back of a few clubs... esp Swans StKilda WC Adelaide .. there will be an evening of the competition.. which could make it very interesting...

Personally i think the defence will stand up!!!

I hope you're right Synners. I also hope that if things don't go right in the heat of battle that old habits don't creep in either.

I am looking forward to seeing what Murphy can do with 3 other midfielders getting opposition attention before him.

Going from taking the #1 tagger to having no tag - it is going to be like a new life for him

I'm sure Murph would've loved seeing Stevo mix it up 'inside' against Freo and taking hits ok. Perhaps it'll be JUDD and Stevo rotating as our major tag takers with Murph Carrotts Simmo GIBBS running riot elsewhere. :-D
