Dumbest idea yet.
Other people have tried it, and it ceates an outrage because no-one owns the sky, it makes life impossible for astonomers and is poluting by wasting energy.
Here is an example:
http://www.ags.dk/as/sky.htmIn the city of Sonderborg, Denmark, a local high tech company applied a computer controlled long range searchlight beam in short periods, without any public warning.
As a result, the local newspaper gave strange eye witness reports: People claimed to have seen a real UFO!
The searchlight was put on all night long and gave the owner what he wanted, public attention. "Before this action, nobody knew our company. Now everyone knows who and where we are..." The beam was on for fifty nights before actions were made to stop it: Do protests help? Does it help to fight? The answer is YES !
Several associations and private people protested, and the green-minded city of Sonderborg in 1995 put a local ban on this kind of commercials as one of the first towns in Denmark. Several companies tried to evade the city ban protesting against the local ban. A local Disco mounted a new projector in 1996, and the combined searchlights were able to draw a UFO symbol on the sky.
After 3 days it was stopped by the authorities after several citizen protests.
Firstly, on what basis did the locals complain about the lasers?! Remember we are talking about Denmark - a conservative country with very hard laws on terms of conservation and sustainability (much like Holland). For some reason I don't think it would as easy to enforce a ban here - not without a fair share of legal wrangling first.
And instead of denoucing the idea altogether - why not come up with a reasonable substitute instead?? The laser idea was thinking outside the square, can you possibly contribute a similar idea that ticks all the boxes? And cost isn't exactly an issue now is it? If Pratt seriously wanted to go ahead couldn't he just buy a few carbon credits via Visy and pump out the sign for a hour every night after a win?!
You know if you head down to Southbank on any given night, check out what happens every hour on the hour outside Crown. Hmmm... a but wasteful now isn't it? A lot of gas being burnt off for no other reason than a few minutes entertainment. A lot of birds getting scorched.
Can you tell me the difference?!?!?!!!
