Saturday: Was driving back from a local antique show when I heard Eddie McGuire on the radio. He’d rung the ABC to whinge about Chris Tarrant not getting any frees. I couldn’t help but smile – the umpires had got their man again. From time to time the umps decide to have a bit of fun with someone – and this year it’s been Eddie. They’ve decided that Tarrant will just about have to be garrotted before he’ll get a free kick. So they keep the whistles in their mouths, and then sit back and watch Eddie have apoplexy – especially when he’s commentating. Geisch reckons it’s not only good sport, but good for morale amongst the troops. It would have been even better if one umpire in WA who wasn’t in on the plan hadn’t given Tarrant his only free of the season a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully everyone else will keep toeing the line until the umpires take pity on Eddie and call off the game. Or until Tarrant has his head pulled off in a particularly nasty incident and people start to notice.

Monday: Heard a few people on radio this morning saying that anyone who picked more than four winners at the weekend “knows nothing about football.â€
