Since Russell was replaced we've had a habit of leading at half time & losing. Still too many soft tissue injuries. Took the risk with Silvagni & he ended up subbed off

Going well so far

We hear a lot of his side here.

Always two sides, but, some damning stuff here.

Last 12 minutes focuses on his time at Carlton.

Attacked our culture, said we bottled it in 2023 vs Brisbane.

Another ex disgruntled employee whinging about old boss.
He is right about one thing we are better at losing than winning.
The entire club cannot handle expectations and bottle it when the opportunity arises to make the next step

I laughed when AR was about to talk about the enormity of the Hawks replacing every single person in the footy department & nailing every single appointment, only for McFarlane’s waking apnea to kick in with ‘Stewy Dew was a fat @#$%&!, tell us about that’.

I listened to most of it, including all the bits about Carlton, I think you should all listen to that last ten minutes or so, some very interesting and insightful stuff.

Stuff that really resonated with me
- everyone cheering and clapping Voss and the players after the prelim loss in Brisbane. He was surprised the players weren’t more gutted and that the occasion was celebrated immediately. As soon as the siren went I walked out if the ground, I didn’t clap and cheer Voss or the players. I was absolutely gutted and just wanted to get away. I felt bad for that for a long while but I don’t now, it was a celebration of mediocrity, it shouldn’t have been so warm and fuzzy for the players. Russel is right.
- the wins at the end of 23 was some of the most exciting and enjoyable times he had at any club
- he believes that team should have won and could easily have gone onto winning the GF
- he believes we are only a few players away from challenging again and that we don’t need to blow the list. “It can change very quickly with a few players in the right roles”. A fast mid, a fast and skilful HFF, and a fast and skilled hbf. He nominated Walsh, Martin and Marchbank in 23 as triggers.
- because of all the injuries we were actually very fresh in the final last year and the group should have really challenged the lions.
- Carlton is “all about business”, whereas hawthorn are really a tight family. He doesn’t see this as a negative for Carlton, it’s just the way Carlton are different and it shouldn’t stop us having success.

He didn’t slam the club, that’s just people looking for headlines. He was very balanced and forthright. Lots of positives, more so than the cherry picked negative headlines.

Andrew Russell is a seasoned professional.
What he shares with us about the club should be treated with respect. He’s not the enemy. It’s obvious he made great relationships with Carlton people.

The main points for me were:
1. We got use to losing. And I ask why?
2. Players didn’t choose to fight to win the Prelim.
3. We are not that far away. 3 players improved our game in 2023.

Russell didn’t lay blame on coach. He blamed a losing culture.
Amazing how one player in each zone is all it took to be good to unbeatable.
He didn’t blame 2 rucks for loss.

I think you can still be proud of making a prelim after being 15th mid season... But you still need to use losing that prelim and being so close yet so far as motivation for the next season and we clearly didn't (see losing culture).

It's hard to say on the 2023 GF.
We'd gone the long way round and from memory the GF was a hot day.
I'd have hated to have made it and lost to Colon. But we were definitely riding the wave so who knows.

The biggest take out for me was his comments on the losing culture we have..nothing we don't know yet it seems impossible to turn around.

Good interview.
I think he is correct in that we needed to build on how far we have come, same as the Hawks in 07.
Keep building, stability is the key with minor changes.
Add some senior depth in those lines with speed and skill this year and who knows.

The biggest issue with our culture is this need to blow the list up or sack the coach and any other extreme measures our supporters demand.
