Ha, that's brilliant. We've got a retired bloke on our street who drives his wife nuts with his random purchases (I reckon it's fair enough, they've got 250 square metre empty nest house to fill). It's worked out well for us at times; once my wife mentioned in conversation that our air fryer had died and his wife said, oh, Steve bought a spare one the other week... here you go! On another occasion it was early December and Steve's wife asked what I was getting my eldest and I mentioned I'd been researching telescopes online because the kid and I were outside every night locating the planets... lo and behold, Steve had bought a very nice telescope earlier in the year that was still in the box! I didn't like the idea of taking it for free, eventually I convinced them to let me pay 20 bucks. Reckon it was worth 10-15 times more than that.

So was it a sprinkler hole or a soccer ball?

I was at the game but didn’t see the incident myself.

I was watching them clowning around with soccer ball. It looked to me he did it stepping on the ball but that is not to say that there wasn't a sprinkler head.
But given Curnow past of injuries clowning around my money is soccer ball

Yeah, we can't have young men in their early 20's out throwing some hoops with their mates in the off season.
Wrap them up in bubble wrap and make them sit in their bedrooms for a few months.
Stop them having sex, they may throw a hip out.

I understand we badly lost a final but FMD. Sack the coach, sack the footy manager, sack the players, spread rumours about the players.......

simple - cut off his legs and then he would injure himself

charlie had a 3-4 week injury and turned it into 2 years. wasn't it like 4 separate knee injuries that had nothing to do with footy and training?

basketball, squatting 100kgs at home before he had clearance to even do weights, fell up some stairs. i'm positive there was another one.

no one is saying the guys can't live. but they're being paid good money to play footy. with all the talk of mac andrew's contract, and harley reid being the first 20million dollar player - look for afl to start writing in contracts like NFL & NBA where they can't surf, or skate or play other sports outside their profession and outside their season etc

Players know what they are allowed and not allowed to do. eg snow skiing is out of the question in season or during their break.

Shit happens. 100kg Squats when told not to tells me Charlie's deviant gene is greater than most.

I wonder how much of what Charlie said about his injuries is true, in particular the staircase slip.

Don't read Sam McLure articles if you want there truth Braithy.
He had a 3-4 week medial sprain and dislocated his knee cap playing basketball 4 months later. You suggested he did it while he was supposed to be resting it. That's not correct.
He slipped and fractured it at a later date which we don't have the facts on.

He later injured it doing weights but it was 5 months post surgery. He was already at a high level of training so to suggest he didn't have clearance is incorrect. The issue was with his medical treatment. The screw holes within the knee cap became the issue. I was told by a parent of another player that the screws had been improperly placed in the knee which caused the problem. The knee cap fracture was healing fine but the screw holes weren't.
That's why the club engaged a different surgeon to conduct another procedure.
Charlie wasn't negligent, he was just a young person doing what young people do. It's the club that failed the player if anything.

see, i heard he hadn't had the green light to do anything more than run, when he squatted and re-fractured his knee?

i think the other time, he didn't have the all clear to kick a ball, and he was with Ed's kids and he was kicking the ball off his left foot, thinking it was ok - but the right leg gave out under him and he injured it again.

who really knows what the real stories were - tripping up the stairs is suss, lol ... the rumours flying around were wild at the time.

including "staircase" in any injury explanation is the classic liar's "tell" in my book.

in the way "I walked into a door" is used to closed down a discussion about a bruise to face by a victim of gendered violence or kids who can't stop getting into fights.

but footy clubs are full of rumor mills and gossiping men with nothing better than to spread lies. I hope Charlie's learnt any lessons around conditioning and return from injury he needs to have learnt by now and trust there are people at the club with the balls and good bedside manner to tell him straight if he hasn't.

This injury played a huge role derailing our season.

Quote:
Was it a sprinkler head? Was it a pothole? Was it something else? The truth is, we may never know.
But whatever it was, it derailed Carlton’s season.
It was Saturday, July 6, and the Blues turned up to western Sydney full of confidence, fresh from a 10-goal belting of old rivals Richmond and sitting second on the ladder, a game and a half inside the top four.

But what transpired over the next four hours would have an impact on the rest of their season.

Half an hour before the bounce, superstar Coleman Medal leader Charlie Curnow lost his footing in the pre-game warm-up and clutched his ankle during a run through.

Two teammates saw it, but thought little of the severity of the incident. Curnow winced but carried on.

He played through pain for the game and for the first 32 minutes, Curnow’s lack of impact on the contest didn’t matter.

The Blues kicked eight of the first 10 goals and looked to be cruising to another victory.

A senior Blues delegate at the ground could even be heard joking about booking in club favourite Robbie Williams for September’s grand final entertainment.
You have to feel for him; it was hard to see what was coming.

The Giants would kick 12 of the next 14 goals, the Blues would lose eight of their next 10 games and the club would persist with playing Curnow.
Curnow played in the next five games, never really looking like the same player. He kicked 11 goals in those five contests, but if you remove the North Melbourne match, he kicked just seven in four games and was ruled out of the club’s demoralising elimination final loss to the Brisbane Lions.
