positive for mine, is it felt like a professional win. did what we needed to do, without all guns firing and walked away with the win.

another positive, is the last 3 wins have all been 4+ goals etc.. another sign of growth IMO.

i think we are a better side this year, then last year.

Agreed. Didn't see the game live so watched the replay Sunday night. Then read all the uplifting scum commentary and thought , wtf? We looked in control for most of the game. Sure they blew some easy shots, but we never looked like we were going to concede a run of goals.
They kicked consecutive goals only once. 3 in a row in the last when the game was over and it took them 15 minutes to do it.
But hey, better the press build them up and discount our win. Fine by me.

nice summary.

Let's not forget it was a Giants side reeling from the death of a former teammate two days before. Did it have an impact? Who knows. Possibly. The giants aren't as good as we thought anyway they've dropped off.

wasn’t that Freo a few weeks ago against i don’t recall who? but they got smashed (understandably). i had Giants as top eight finisher at start of seasons, potentially top four. something has gone well off the boil there. have other teams “worked them out” a little? too many key play-makers and/or key defenders injured/out of form?

Round 13 coaches votes
10 - Tom De Koning (CARL)
7 - Elijah Hollands (CARL)
5 - Nic Martin (ESS)
3 - George Hewett (CARL)
2 - Alex Cincotta (CARL)
2 - Sam Durham (ESS)
1 - Jacob Weitering (CARL)

i had Elijah Hollands level with or slightly above TDK but i wasn’t in attendance at the ground so who knows really. TDKs been doing it at that level a while now, and Goldstein is not Max Gawn. just felt Elijah has really arrived at Carlton with this performance as a vital link up goto player in the middle at times and in our forward half was key in our uncharacteristic efficiency going forward.

it was a complete game. he played so smart, he was always winning his possessions in handy parts of the ground and free of the insta-tackle pressure that Crippa and Walsh were under all game. his ball use was superb. and he kicked straight at goal — something we should never underrate. as underlined by several underperforming stars at *** in the same game.

i didn’t know what to hope for in this kid, even if he went pick #7 while out with an ACL injury. but his trade is starting to look like a more impressive trade than getting Martin or Cerra given how little we gave up (a bag of chips apparently). makes the Ollie Hollands pick even better than it was at the time (sorry Ollie, no offence!, pun intended).

i was about to say better even than the Hewett trade, but Hewett possibly played his best game for us this week so it would be uncharitable of me to say it. most importantly Hewett stood up against ** so that can’t be underestimated in club folklore in any way.

Honorable mentions to Saad, Weiters (already in the votes with 1), Williams and Curnow (who would probably do differently with some of his kicks if he got them again).

and if Durds doesn’t win a starting spot with his impressive mark and goal from pocket what more can he do? did more in one quarter than Jack Carroll did in three and his time as last quarter sub in previous three matches.

No. Junkies are always younger, braver and have been through more adversity than anyone in history.
Yeah, that old dog TDK taught their young pup Goldy a lesson.....

Go Blues

that's a great wrap up. great to see tdk getting bandied about as top 4 or 5 ruck in the comp, and if he keeps going might be the best if we win the flag

I just realised I've given TDK 5 MVP votes three weeks in a row. He's in the conversation with Gawn and Grundy, the other two have the edge in ruck craft but his age makes TDK the most valuable ruckman in the league.

The Essendon* Edge is as real as the Shinboner Spirit.

Riley Beveridge “hold my beer”.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/1150040
De Koning's 17 contested possessions were a career-best amount, while his 24 disposals were just one shy of the career-high 25 he notched three weeks ago in a win over Gold Coast as his ball-winning abilities continue to improve.

Meanwhile, his 27.2 AFL Player Ratings points – Champion Data's most definitive statistic to measure influence on a contest – were not only a career-high, but were also the most anyone amassed across the entire round of football.

[…]

Champion Data notes De Koning has averaged 21.1 AFL Player Ratings points, 22.3 disposals, 14.7 contested possessions, 9.7 clearances, 4.7 centre-bounce clearances and 6.7 score involvements in that stretch. It ranks him No.1 among the season averages of all rucks throughout that run.

[…]

That's not to diminish Pittonet's influence in the period between returning from an injury-interrupted pre-season and going out of the side due to his finger issue. Strangely enough, between rounds five and 10 – when Pittonet played alongside De Koning – he was Carlton's second-highest rated player behind Cripps.
and backing up what some on here have been arguing about us being more mobile on the rebound transition with just one ruck (TDK)

Quote:
De Koning simply offers Carlton something different and, as history would suggest, something more effective and sustainable in terms of helping the team's turnover game through his versatility.

Teams still amass the bulk of their score from turnover. For context, the League's best side, Sydney, has scored 59.9 percent of its total output from turnover this year, compared to 36.6 percent from stoppage and 3.5 percent from kick-ins.

Carlton is a much better turnover team when De Koning is playing as a sole ruck. According to Champion Data, the team's scores from turnover differential is -5.3 when Pittonet is paired with De Koning, but +25.4 when De Koning plays alone.

i would still point out that win/loss ratio comparisons involving one or two designated rucks ignore the return of some seriously talented players since Pitto was injured four weeks ago. and ignore some more consistent list management on the field which always allows for more consistent performances.

i’m reflecting on my posts of 2022/3 saying our premiership teams have always had a commanding ruckman in the middle.

i wouldn’t have guessed Pitto would be ranked so highly as he is today for pure ruckcraft and influence at the bounces and stoppages.

as for TDK i can only say i was hopeful but can’t claim to have had any inclining of what he was to become but a year or two later. both as a ruck and follow up middle fielder and even as a KP forward when resting forward, though that role is probably the third or fourth string to his bow.

In the late 50’s early 60’s they were renowned as a bit of a soft team and were known as “The Gliders”.
