lyon and sos is the known connection

bolton is a brilliant teacher and developer of kids - see box hill hawks

note- bolton is an employee of carlton not a contractor to carlton

lyon did coach under 19s at carlton

perhaps 3rd club lucky for a premiership by lyon (saints, freo, carlton)....

is that the long term game plan?

Really? Already with the rumors? The poor bloke hasn't coached a game yet! He could be the greatest thing since sliced bread and there are suggestions that there's a succession plan afoot? Give me a break. Now - I won't for a second say I understand modern football - I definitely don't...but I do know that in two years the jury is well and truly out on Ross Lyon understanding modern football. And I would probably put money on Brendan Bolton having a better feel for how the modern game is played than a defensive-minded coach who keeps falling at the last hurdle.

Agree. That was my motivation to put it out there; we have to learn from past mistakes and avoid old and tired campaigners.

To me this has the whiff of a coterie group wankfest

Judd, in his book, touched on how much playing experience counts when coaching an afl side. I thought it was a given and odd that he wrote that. Having said that the reason why Bolton didn't make it is plain fo all to see and not his fault...He is tiny!!

To be fair, what would Judd know about coaching an AFL side? Ian Stewart, eg, who won ONE more Brownlow than Judd did, knew pretty much SFA about coaching.

Wasn't Judd on the committee that (I thought) unanimously recommended Bolton to the Board?

Well fair enough then. Quite possible Judd would have recommended Barker.

Brendon spoke for an hour to 100 ANZ staff today:

- it began with a CFC 'Bound by Blue' vid
- some background and overview of his philosophies
- talked a lot about leadership and culture being the same thing
- proclaimed Sam Docherty as THE footy head who knew everything a la Sam Mitchell
- said it's a start, no big grand vision, but for now all about teaching
- said his process was 9 hours long and he knew Carlton were serious about the state of the list and the club

He spoke well. Clearly passionate. Clearly enthused. No grand statements and no big claims.

It's a long time since we've had a coach whom I've actually really liked and could have a beer with.

I could have a beer with Brendan.

Bloke would probably still need to bring his ID to get into the pub though ...

He reminds me of a teacher my daughter had in high school.
A rare gem who came to teaching after years in another industry.
His dedication and passion took my daughter from zero to hero in maths ..to where she could do advanced maths and he also took early years french.
He had the knack of bringing out the best in his students.

Talking up Docherty... wonder if perhaps he becomes captain? Or maybe vice-captain with a succession plan?

Too many players backing Murphy for Docherty to be captain. Maybe vice-captain is on the cards.

Gotta have Simmo as VC. There'll be a changing of guard in 2 years time (subject to Simmo's retirement).

When asked how the GWS Giants boys were going, he immediately highlighted how good Phillips is looking on the track and added how hard he was working.

They call it the Fat Club and it is, plainly, the club no one at Carlton wants to be a member of.

As part of making his mark and putting his stamp on Carlton to reinforce that standards had been lifted, new Blues coach Brendon Bolton and his fitness staff have set a higher fitness standard for players.

Each player had to have less than 12 per cent body fat – as measured by skinfolds – or be put into the Fat Club to undertake intense training to reduce skinfolds and improve running times before rejoining the main group.
