Best all rounder was SOS. Southby wanted to play CHF at one time and was trialled there for a few games and was decidedly average.

Dench was a terrific player. His dash was really something else. But I only saw him a couple of time a year.

Southby was far and away the best pure FB. At least until Balme hit him into the next universe at the end of '73 and then you can have a debate. His balance and poise was Doullesque and kicking the torps from the goal square 60 meters (yards?) every time. Later in his career he had this full game one on one with Blight and beat him pointless at PP. Still remember it. And he was fair.

Another one not always mentioned was Kelvin Moore from Hawthorn. Darn good player.

Great era for full backs.

Great post. Who was the only FB to hold Hudson goalless? I think it was Southby but not sure.
I saw them all play too and I wold have Southby but who cares. It's done and dusted.

John Lennon was once asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world..
His reply?
"He's not even the best drummer in the band!"

FWIW, Harvey Merrigan was no slouch.

Oh, and Renato's brother wasn't too shabby either.

IIRC it was Rod "Curly" Austin.

Slow news day

Southby was amazing. 25 years ahead of his time.
SOS kept Ablett and Carey to one goal in the '95 finals series to help us win the flag.

Balme knocked out Southby in 73 to help Tiggers steal that flag.

Either way, FB of the century should have been a Carlton player

Actually that was zero goals, the goal he conceded was in the Brisbane final.

SOS was the only player I've ever seen force Wayne Carey to change to half back in an attempt to get into a match at about the same time in his career as Carey was unmatched as the best player in the game at the time, and one of the best ever. Given how good Carey was at his peak, that's something special.

For this reason I don't really rate Carey that highly, all the North games I saw Silvagni invariably had his number

I watched Ayres for years - great player - but never at full back

If anyone ever questions Silvagnis selection, I just reel off the list of his opponents he played on and beat week after week. That usually shuts them up. SOS played in an era of amazing forwards...

Ablett
Dunstall
Lockett
Carey
Richardson
Modra
Lyon
Grant
Loewe
Lloyd

Don't think so. IIRC, Carey kicked one on SOS, in the third quarter I think. SOS held Ablett and White &/or whoever else Brisbane tried on him goalless.

We might just have to watch those games all over again

You're right according to the blueseum:

The biggest defensive spot belonged to Stephen Silvagni, who was assigned to North legend Wayne Carey, and beat him hands-down. Carey kicked a goal, but SOS earned more stats (and did more than he was asked) out at the more unusual position (for SOS) of centre half-back. Carey's was the only goal scored against SOS during the entire 1995 final series, in which Silvagni stood star players like Brisbane's Darryl White and Geelong's God (Gary Ablett).

I'm still of the belief CHB was SOS's best position. He finished 3rd in the 1990 Brownlow playing there and was less exposed for pace off a lead.

He played at Full-back more due to David Parkin's coaching philosophy, our lack of other options (Dean and Sexton were also better suited to half-back) and the age of Full-forwards in the 1990's.

Fat slobbo should be more worried about the story that could run with the headline "Decision to dope the whole Essendon* squad was flawed"
