Unless I'm mistaken, the Gibbs compensation would be cancelled out by acquiring a free agent.

Yes, we would save the $550,000 or whatever he is on now for next season. But we couldnt chase a free agent this year or we lose the compo pick. Clubs still have to pay a certain % of the salary cap and if Judd retires too then who do we pay this money to?
